Great performance from Ed Woodward ... gritty and realistic without going over the top and complemented by the others including Russell Hunter who was perfectly matched as "Lonely" ... top acting
People often use the word "underrated" when referring to very good actors! Woodward was not underrated but on the contrary, he was highly rated as a serious actor and rightly so.
I saw this film recently on television. The Jaguar in the car chase was manufactured in 1968 according to the registration number so would have only been five years old in 1973. A shame such a relatively young car got wrecked. In the 1971 film Villain starring Richard Burton a 3.8 litre Jaguar S Type, manufactured 1963 - 68, gets destroyed in a getaway scene.
It's great to see Edward Woodward and Russell Hunter again, in their respective roles. This film lacks the gritty atmosphere of the series but is quite watchable.
If you could take the very best of what you know of Edward Woodward and distill it into a TV series spanning both the black & white and colour generation along with a movie and the occasional special, then Callan would be it.

I'm not overly keen on the film version as the plot is greatly stretched. The story was only meant to last an hour at the most, which is why the "Armchair Theatre" episode worked so well. In addition, the claustrophobic atmosphere from the series and the harsh photography is completely lost in this film. However, it is great to see Edward Woodward and Russell Hunter reprising their familiar characters. They make this movie tolerable.

I was thinking that Schneider sent the Greek and his muscle because Schneider was checking up on Callan because someone told Schneider that Callan had done time. So that Callan's stooge would have had essentially nothing to do with that. Makes real world sense. But such is not what Callan figured. Callan's little brain doesn't start ticking over on the matter until well past the hour. But, in any case, one can see how the German mind worked here. The Greek inquiry is to do solely with the prison record, as he was told of, rather than a more general interrogation.

Superb big-screen adaptation of the 1967 pilot A MAGNUM FOR SCHNEIDER. Great acting, loads of action, Callan conditioning his hands in a bucket of sand before chopping down huge David Prowse. Pity Anthony Valentine couldn't reprise his role as Meres, but at least we had wonderful Russell Hunter as Lonely. This was Callan's only big screen adventure as far as I know. Time for a remake?
+Villy Vassell John says... We could have had a thriving film industry, knocking out a dozen good films like this a year. Alas, the Treasury thought the money would be better spent on expanding the secret services and Trident.

@@JohnMillingtonAEIOU They were making 'Callan' TV shows for about a decade before this film came out. 'The Section' as described in 'Callan' is a fantasy, they spend their time hunting other spies.
'Callan' was worlds away from 'The Equaliser.' The series began in 1967 and was in black and white; even as a young boy I found it compelling. It had a very realistic, seedy kind of mood to it all - the interplay between Edward Woodward, the maloderous 'Lonely'/Russell Hunter and the oily 'Toby Meres'/Anthony Valentine was gripping and slightly sadistic. I realise this in hindsight of course, but I certainly found this tense and quite sordid minor masterpiece fascinating even at that tender age. Every bit as well crafted and believable as a John Le Carré piece.
I found this film to be more enjoyable than the TV series that preceded it, with good performances from the entire cast, especially Woodward and Hunter, but they shouldn't have changed the music. Parts of the car chase were filmed in Waltham St. Lawrence and Sherlock Row in Berkshire. I recognized the locations immediately. A shame that they destroyed an immaculate S-type jag, but the chase was in the most part very realistic.

The Texas flag is upside down during the battle of Gettysburg!
Lonely played the role of Ferret in Minder alongside George Cole.
Russell Hunter also starred in a sitcom with Bill Maynard years ago. It was called 'The Gaffer'
Best TV Programme ever and a great film
@@JohnMillingtonAEIOU They were making 'Callan' TV shows for about a decade before this film came out.
'The Section' as described in 'Callan' is a fantasy, they spend their time hunting other spies.
well in my top ten british dramas
@@drogomuircastle7175 Callan run from 67-72, the movie come out in 74.
Excellent film and I love tge series. Eric Porter was a creepy Moriarty in Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes
His redemption arc from rapist to respected patriarch in The Forsyte Saga made him a living legend.
Anyone here see Woodward in The Fuzz? At an old age he was still killin' it!
*Hot Fuzz
Great to watch but the Harmonica at the end over the credits is awful and wrong.
A shame that they destroyed an immaculate S-type jag, but the chase was in the most part very realistic.
have you seen the film "robbery
"
Denzel who? this was the Equaliser in his prime.
