  • HART Tools Angle Grinder BROKEN After ONE USE!? (Tested ON STEEL BEAM) In this video we put your comments too the test by testing HART tools new 4-1/2'' angle grinder on steel I-beam! You said in a previous video that the right way to cut through steel I-beam is not to use a reciprocating saw like we did, but to use an angle grinder with a cutting wheel. Today we find out what the HART tools angle grinder is really made of and if it breaks down after one use! Let us know your thoughts on HART tools down in the comments section below and all about how we did it wrong as well.

I just had to help with a huge demo job with an air handler on a hospital. All of the frame was insulated with foam around the I beams which kept the torches from working properly, no 220 so couldn't plasma cut the beams either. We tried grinders and the discs burned up very fast and there was many areas where a grinder would not clear the tight corners. The sawzalls were the quickest and most efficient way to demo the beams. It sucked but they most assuredly have their place.

I picked up the hart grinder on sale. Without 4 amp hour batteries it is pretty bad. The small batteries over heat after about 2 minutes of run time and you have to let them cool. However, for the price it is pretty good at cutting light metal with the 4 ah batteries. You still cant push it, nor expect it to be a corded grinder. It saves me a ton of time because I keep the grinding wheel on the corded angle grinder and the cut off wheels on the cordless so I am not changing them out every 5 minutes. They do sell a lot better charger now to, with the combo of 2 4ah batteries and a tool for 100 bucks. I picked up the hand vac to clean up mouse turds at camp :)

You asked and I'm replying. Grinder is a corded Metabo 6" diameter "flat nose" with a Weiler Ceramic wheel 0.045".
I have found the Weiler line of products to be the best value.
The cut I made was on a 1" thick plate 48" wide, I made the cut in about 36 minutes, I used about one and half wheels. Same reason that you pointed out . I have Victor Bulldog torches that will easily cut 8 inches of steel, ( have to use liquid oxygen tanks and things get frosty, from the amount used) but couldn't have the sparks going all over. So the grinder had to be used. I couldn't move the plate by myself. Weight about 800 lbs, all that I had to do was to cut a strip of plate. I haven't seen, and can't afford any cordless grinder that is "real". I can only imagine what is the cost to run a 9" cordless Metabo). I have some old monsters from the B&D industrial times. They are just too heavy to handle all the time. My choice is 6' diameter, I think they are the best in terms of bang for the buck. I have them from Metabo, DeWalt and Flex, everything is corded. The best way to cut an "I" beam is to start with a new wheel cut the "T" junction ( where the flange meets the web) from the flange plane, finish the sides of the flange, then do the web until the wheel contacts the other flange. Start on the other "T"point finish the flange sides. Try to only cut one plane at the time, otherwise is like to trying to cut a sliced pipe from the inside, too much material binding the wheel at once,. On the other hand cutting the pipe from the outside there will be much less material contacting the wheel at once. The cut has to be thought out before one begins and needless to say one must have a quality wheel to do a job fast. For homeowners anything is acceptable, so having quality grinders and wheels may not be necessary.
There are many circumstances that the easiest and fastest equipment may not be choice for many reasons.
One has to consider all the implications before choosing how to proceed. Knowing all the available options is a necessity.
I appreciate your perspective of looking at equipment because you understand what it takes to deliver in the "real" world on a day to day basis. Keep up the good work.

@VCG Vince, your patience with the window lickers that would use a grinder instead of a Sawzall is amazing. I've owned a fuel grinder since 2015. Love it and always try to work it into the job. My fuel Sawzall and a Diablo or Milwaukee blade for cast iron or steel with the carbides is the tool for the job. Hands down. A torch really? & then the grinder to clean it up, a napkin for the drool, then some powder on the bum, fresh changiepooh, and so on. We get it done, look good doing, and our customers tell their friends when they see how perfect it looks. BAMN !!!! Patriot Custom Homes...."Deep in the ❤ of 🇨🇱"

I've used a Dewalt grinder with a metal cut-off thin curf blade to do small jobs like rebar... but an I-beam? Maybe a gas cut-off tool with a 15"+ diamond blade, but not a grinder.

if i was going to cut a rsj steel beam yesi useing a angle grinder is one way but if you was going to use one i would use a coreded one but a bigger more powerful gringder like a 230mm or a 9in it do the job not a problem i used many in my past but the one i love the most and its a old one is my dads hilti gringder one of the best
great video always fun to watch keep p the great work guys
i think i might have to do a swap with you guys i send you a budget gringder to test one that you dont get over your side

I would have gone with a sawzall as well for cutting that I beam. Vince the only thing that went wrong here was that you use the standard grinding wheel instead of the cutting wheel. I have two right angle brushed grinder from ryobi. And kind of knew that the wheel you used in the demo was not the right one. I do highly respect your feed back on the tools you out and rate them. And it's not to put anyone down either. And even with the cutting wheel it may be longer to get cut through that type of material because of the thickness.

7 inch milwaukee grinder with a pipeliner cut off disc. The kerf is a little big at 1/8 but that would be the most efficient way to cut those i beams if you're not gonna use a torch.

Isn't Hart Ryobi with a different color? Also, I think Dewalt or a Skillsaw Recip saw could do the job.

tools have more mppff when you use a dual range battery like a 4/5/6 amp one, a 2amp on a grinder was really like trying with the smallest possible toy. then you have tools optimized for 2 ranges of 21700 batteries, which are really getting powerful. i never had to work with an ibeam, but i have seen youtube vids cuttings techniques using a 18v grinder

It depends and what you need done the fastest would be an oxy set with an 6mm cutting head but you will have sparks
A plasma cutter will do it as well but it'll be slower than the sawsall
A grinder will do this cut but you'd want at least an 5" and up grinder, preferably power cord tool cordless is pretty useless at this cut.
You'll want an 1mm cutting disc and that's for it's cutting speed and longer life, you are using an 2mm disc which is super slow and you'll go through it fast too fast.
so a grinder that's 5" to 7" 1mm disc will fly through this as it's 3 cuts top bottom then through the center.
An 9" will probably do this as 1 cut straight through but some people get scared with 9" grinders
However the above will throw off a lot of sparks, which if you don't want or can't have sparks then you can't use the above methods.
The other problem with grinders is space you need to have access to everything and a sawsall depending on blade length might cut through this I-Beam in 1 go.
SPace is usually the bigger problem rather than sparks etc, if you can't get a grinder in anyway then you won't be using a grinder in the first place

I could use my 7 inch gigantic 20 year old Milwaukee 15 amp rear handle grinder with a slicing blade but those sawsall blades look much safer especially if you were making a cut midway on a long beam where the blade might try and get pinched. I hate exploding abrasive wheels.

So Vince I don't necessarily disagree on your preferred tools for this but if you are going to make a case here you should use a good grinder, and a good wheel. also bring your work up to a good height like you did with the sawzall. Give the grinder a fair chance.

Yeah I like my sawzall better than my angle grinder. I had a milwaukee m18 non fuel grinder and burnt the thing up in a year. Then I bought a corded dewalt grinder and I abuse the crap out of that thing still works like new. Also for corded grinders to make myself unplug it when I change the wheel I zip tied the wrench to the end of the cord so I have to unplug it and so I don't loose it.

My blade of choice would’ve been a Lennix laser 8012 because of the height of the blade. That extra height helps keep it stiff, and when it stays rigid, it keeps the teeth in contact with the material you’re cutting. I cut a lot of cast-iron as a plumber, and I wasn’t always able to use chain snaps, so Lennox blades were the gold standard, or Milwaukee/Diablo if I couldn’t get Lennox

  • @harryr3989

Well I work shut down on power plants, and I use Milwaukee all day. And we do the exact same thing plus way more with ours. We rarely use grinders because you need a fire watch and what not.. We way rather use a sawzall especially cordless. Because believe it or not, the hardest thing to find in a power plant is power/ 110 plug. So that's a good trick for sure. But honestly a far comparison would be to use a 6 inch grinder, cordless. Not a 4 inch. Because a four inch grinder isn't really great for cutting its more for grinding or cutting small things. On top of that when you do cut a I-beam with a grinder its aggravating af to cut beams with. And if those spammers had actually cut one before they would know that.

I cut beam all the time. Small and large. And i use all type of cordless power tool. Mostly Milwaukee and Dewalt. There 4-1/2 inch will but it will take for ever with a few batteries. But there not really deep enough to cut through the flange to the web . but a 6 inch Metabo will eat right through it with enough blade to flip that beam and go inside that 90 degree to the other side and finish the cut.

I weld for a living. I use my angle grinders every day. Most are around the same size as the Hart. 5.5 amps.
I wouldn't even attempt cutting that beam with those grinders.
I also have a Makita 15 amp 7" grinder. With a 7" or 8" cutoff wheel it would probably take me at least 15 minutes. Maybe even longer. The motor housing on the tool is going to feel like it's on fire.
I switched from an abrasive chop saw to a Evolution carbide blade chop saw it's so much faster than my old 14" abrasive chop saw.
I hate those recip saws because they shake you to death but they cut fast.
Lenox made a video where a guy cut an old car in half with their bi-Metal blades. Pretty quick too.
