Myakka River State Park in Sarasota, Florida ... in (about) five minutes!
We're going to show you what some go to see at this park, and plenty of what we think many people miss at this park surrounding Florida's first designated wild and scenic river.
Formally dedicated in 1941!
From the 1850s through the 1920s, the lands of Myakka River State Park were used for cattle ranching. The last of such ranchers, Bertha Palmer, is memorialized on Ranch House Road.
The visitor center is a great stop for kids of all ages. They have a scavenger hunt that can be adapted for large or small groups of children. It's a fun activity to inspire and educate young minds about Florida wildlife.
From the State Parks website: The park features three campgrounds with 90 campsites. Each site is equipped with 50-amp electrical service, water, a fire ring and picnic table. The sites in Palmetto Ridge also have sewer hook-ups. All campsites are located within 40 yards of restroom facilities with hot showers. There's also laundry in both Old Prairie and Palmetto Ridge campgrounds.
There are six primitive campgrounds (Mossy Hammock, Bee Island, Honore, Panther Point, Oak Grove and Prairie) located along the hiking trails for backpackers. These rustic settings provide campers with a fire pit and post to hang items. Each campground has three campsites.
Myakka Trail includes a 38.9-mile hiking loop trail maintained by the Florida Trail Association.
Myakka has 12 miles of designated horse trails. If ridden together, it becomes a 15-mile journey.
The 66-mile Florida Wild and Scenic Myakka River flows through 58 square miles of wetlands, prairies, hammocks and pinelands, starting in northeast Manatee County and ending in Charlotte Harbor. Fourteen miles flow through Myakka River State Park.
Bobcats, otters, alligators and 100-plus species of birds can be seen at Myakka. The Florida dry prairie, a globally imperiled ecosystem, comprises more than half the park. This is the second most biodiverse ecosystem in North America, and it is full of diverse plants.

Great video. Looks very professional and informative. I've seen videos about myakka that last over 15 minutes and this one is less than 6 minutes and shows the most. Really good job. One question... How did you do that set up with the sewer hose? That would be great to have that.
My guess is you're talking about the setup around 2:22 in the video where I show someone else's setup, which I think is with 2x4 wood posts, small L-brackets, and I'm guessing house gutters or something similar that's just enough to cradle the hose. Looks like some velcro keeping it all firmly together too. I thought it was a great idea.... as for me, I was dealing with my 20-30' of hose on the ground, and unfortunately most of their sewer inlet pipes at Myakka are in a raised block of concrete like you see in this video. This means everything goes down into the hose, then has to go back up many inches, unless you're creative about supporting it like this person did. Even my accordion-style hose support winds up far below the height of that concrete block.
Very well put together video…no mindless chatter…or music, to the point and the “satellite” overviews, hose tips and other suggestions very informative.
Thanks! More to come of other FL State Parks!
great video. looks like a great place to explore.
There is also a Tram tour as well and a few trails to venture on.
Can’t wait!

Any good recommendations for beach camping?
Hey SpeedGTP, definitely check out Henderson Beach State Park in Destin, FL, Sebastian Inlet State Park in Melbourne Beach, FL, and Gamble Rogers State Park (or State Rec Area, depending on where you look) at Flagler Beach, FL. You can see a glimpse of Gamble Rogers here: ua-cam.com/video/HTSNHYpFq5Y/v-deo.html .
Moving to Venice Woodlands in 2023, very near this park. Can't wait to explore it! Great video overview, thank you! Do the cabins have kitchenettes?
Thanks 🙂 Yes, at least some if not all of them have kitchenettes!
@@WanderingFun thanks! I can see the park flooding heavily during the summer rains...
