  • Watch Chris Newhouse, Executive Director of Sustainability for MATTER, and Noah Elhardt from The Beer-Sheba Project in Senegal discuss the benefits of Chaya in Africa and why they believe this nutritional powerhouse of a plant is the answer to fight malnutrition.
The ten co-ops will be located in marginalized areas where resources are scarce and food is hard to grow. Each co-op will consist of thirty women. The $5,000 per site cost includes 300 Chaya cuttings, training for growing and cooking Chaya, health and nutrition education, equipment and supplies, fencing, a water system and transportation. Regular follow-up visits by trainer Silent Keseke will help to ensure the co-ops' success and sustainability.
“In many ways, this is like a green meat. It provides a lot of the same nutrients, but in a form that people can grow in their backyards with really minimal input, even in places where they don’t have supplemental water.” - Noah Elhardt, Head of Agricultural Education,The Beer-Sheba Project
