It's funny, my first bit of radicalization on Israel after growing up surrounded by Evangelicals in Texas was _An Idiot Abroad,_ of all things. A comedy travel show where Ricky Gervais sent his dim-witted producer Karl Pilkington to various foreign countries outside of his comfort zone. There's an episode in the first season where he goes to Jordan, but first visits Israel and then Palestine. He ends up sympathizing with his Palestinian driver, who is forced to go through checkpoints and faces restrictions and risks that even Karl doesn't have to deal with. At one point Karl describes the barrier wall as depressing, and the driver replies, "when you wake up every day staring at that ugly concrete, that's what's depressing." The sobering reality of the situation sets in quickly. And that was nearly 15 years ago.

Okay someone please help me because I think there's a huge discrepancy between how Ethan and Emma/Hasan and most leftists, including myself, use the term 'Zionist'. Ethan is saying it just means "people who don't want Israel to be destroyed". However, most leftists use it to refer to ideals of "Israeli supremacy". I'm not trying to defend him. I think that's just a general annoyance that I can see happening.
I would give this viewpoint benefit of the doubt except not only has Ethan minimised this genocide. He has consistently denied Israel’s war crimes and consistently centred himself and his feelings over the burned and charred bodies of Palestinian children. He has called students in the west protesting for Palestine “terrorists”. He has made fun of Aaron Bushnell burning himself in protest of US support for Israel. He has refused to highlight Israel’s bombing of Lebanon even when someone from his crew had family who had to evacuate because of Israel. He is literally not engaging with this in good faith and at this point he does not deserve us twisting ourselves in a pretzel to try to make sense of his unhinged takes.

As an Egyptian, Egypt is absolutely complicit. It’s ranked worse than North Korea in terms of freedom of speech. We have 60,000 political prisoners. If it were up to us as the people in Egypt, we’d be right at the border standing up for Palestine. It’s gut wrenching to be RIGHT THERE and to be able to do nothing.
