In this video, Sam takes a look at the CP-1X Compressor, part of Boss's X range of digital DSP stomp boxes, and compares it to the standard analog CS-3...
They may look very similar, but these two pedals are worlds apart. Whereas the best-selling CS-3 is an analog compressor, the next-generation CP-1X is powered by Boss’s state-of-the-art multi-dimension processing, or MDP, digital processor. Cosmetically, these new X range of pedals are very similar to every other Boss pedal. They’ve got the same apocalypse proof housing, come supplied with a 5 year warranty and they run off a 9v battery or optional power supply…but the big giveaway that there’s something special about them is the shiny control plate and chrome knobs. The CP-1X also has a handy LED compression meter so you can easily see the amount of gain reduction whilst playing. There’s controls for output volume, compression level, attack and ratio. Even though it’s really simple to use, as you’re tweaking each of these knobs you’re actually controlling multiple, interlocking parameters at once, enabling a wide range of tone shaping with minimal effort. The powerful DSP processor’s intelligent circuitry adapts to all the subtle nuances in your playing, providing a really natural compression whilst maintaining clarity. And because it’s digital, it greatly reduces noise, a common problem for many analog compressors. This low noise floor, combined with it’s punchy, transparent sound, means that the CP1X also works really well as a booster pedal. With it’s professional grade, 18 volt input circuitry, the CP1X allows ample headroom for even the hottest of pickups. This means you can use any type of guitar, 6, 7 or 8 string, or electro-acoustic and it’ll still delivers exceptional clarity without any unwanted distortion.

One of the best tones I’ve ever gotten was in a local music shop with a strat, a blackface deluxe reverb reissue, and the cp-1x. Unbelievably close to John Mayer’s live tone for Burning Room. Shit you not, me and the shop owner (who was the only other person in there at the time) let out something to the effect of “oh, yeah” basically in unison with each other when I played the first two notes of Burning Room, completely unplanned. I’m sad that not a single bit of the gear I was using was mine.
Alrighty
Damn I love this comment, I just bought the pedal for half the price. I love the Live in LA to slow dancing tone and I have a strat and tubes creamer too! 😁😋🤗
@@geoffizhere1 Tubes Creamer is funny
I just had a CS3 arrive today love it , great for making harmonics pop out and sustain forever.
Great comparison, gave me something to listen to as I decide what to buy. Love the sound of both, the CS-3 definitely has that natural sounding compression over the instrument, but the CP-1X covers more ground for what I play. Cheers!!!
Congratulations for your comparison review! I HAVE THE CS3. After seen this video I think CP-1x brings out clarity of the dry signal more than the CS-3
Thinking about getting a compression pedal. Never used one. Always plugged directly into amp. But I like the tone of the CS3 the most.
Update: I got an MXR super comp for Christmas so I'll see how I like it!
@@TheNewenglandboys i love the attack and sustain a compressor gives.
I have both pedals; with distortion I use the CP1X and add the CS3 when I switch to lead so all three pedals are on at the same time. The tone is amazing!
I've never thought about stacking compression... wouldn't that squeeze the HELL out of the signal?
@@Dizastermaster. never tried either, but i guess could be like opening the second Scotch whisky bottle. lol
@@Dizastermaster. stacking compressors is extremely common in professional recording studios
@colemcnair5752 yeah but for live music at the very beginning of the pedal chain?
@@Dizastermaster. probably not at the very beginning of the chain, but yeah you could stack a couple. just maybe be a little light on both of them
that is a gorgeous guitar. great comparison, thank you
CS-3 is squashy and hollow sounding. CP1X brings things out in front like a nice studio compressor.
I definitely prefer the more natural sound of the CP-1X.
Nice Comparison. CS3 have a vintage sounding compression. Both are great compression electric guitar pedal, but CP1X works better with acoustic guitar, but I imagine that CS3 will be works better on Funk rhythm electric guitar playing
I had my CS-3 on my board from 1992 to 2016 then I used the CS-2 for a year until I started using the CS-1 which is my favourite, quirky as it is, it's got that chewy elastic analog snap I crave! I don't think I'd use a CP-1X at all!
Kinda hard to judge, especially when the output gains aren't matched, nor are the parameters. On first impression the CS-3 seems 'thinner' and squashier, but again, proper adjustment of both sets of controls would probably yield identical sound...
The cs3 colors the sound, i prefer the cp1x. Great video
I love the sustain on my CS3, will I lose that with the CP1X?
I like them both but as far as the strings in the demo the the 1X is much beefier/warmer so it's a matter of what sound the player is looking for. Both have their place for sure but if you are looking for more bottom, fatter then 1X is the one.
Excellent compressor. Not my favorite but I do use it in other rigs
Harmonics were great on the CX1.
I didn't know they were doing a comparison with a CX-1...no such thing...LMAO:)
Cp-1x is much clearer sounding. And good presentation on electric VS acoustic.
Thank's this Is optional Test !
Amazing comparison
cs-3 settings were not matched as well [got close to the tone later on in the video but the volume should have been at around 3-oclock]. However I agree with a comment below "the cpx-1 sounds like a studio compressor and great for acoustic recording. I like them both but would much rather use a CS-3 for stage and the CPX-1 for recording.
I have a cs3. For years I found it unusable but I’ve figured out how to get good sounds out of it as of late but it’s just never transparent. Not that transparent is always good. But it can suck the life and the high end clarity out of your tone unless you’re very careful. The cp1x doesn’t seem to have that problem. All the demos I have heard it sounds fantastic. At every setting. Sounds like they nailed and I might have to get over the digital mind block I have.
Pros
Great sounding compression from light and imperceptible to heavy. It never sounds “choked”
Less expensive than its quality competitors
Gain reduction meter
Super low noise floor
Sturdy
Cons
Silver knobs aren’t the best to look at and can be hard to see where the knob is set
No XLR input
Doesn’t look as cool as other “boutique” pedals. (Yes that does matter)
cs foken 3 for life
4:48 The CS-3 beats the CP-1X for metal lead tone. The CS-3 is more organic and natural certainly as a result of being analog. The CP-1X is struggling to smoothly modify the thick tone and vibrato with its digital processors.
i guess the spotify generation would love the CP-1X lol .. i'm cassette tape guy, i prefer the CS-3 sounds warmer to me, glad still using this on my rig. great video review. thanks.
CP-1X for me. I think it sounds much more natural. Which is a shame because I just ordered the CS-3. Oh well.
How was the CS-3?
@@ricmel8008 not bad at all. I ended up keeping it. I don't use compression that often so it suits my needs.
@@vicarious1028 Thanks much. I am thinking of ordering one now. Do you think I should buy the CS-3 or the CP-1X?
@@ricmel8008 if you're a big-time compressor guy (which I'm not), I would go with the CP1x. But if you just want a compressor to add to your arsenal, save $50 bucks and go with the CS3. I don't think you'd be disappointed.
@@vicarious1028 Thank you very much
CS-3 all my life. It has a living texture. CP-1 is darker.
I play Greek bouzouki and always adding to my board for perfection.....
Will this work with Greek bouzouki....
one is a three string (pairs of strings) and the other a four string (pairs of strings).
Both have pick ups fitted.???
Knobs are not matched...
The new one seems louder at lower volume and has pretty lights .lights in pedels should be the way of new pedels.more pretty lights.yer Josh more led lights on stomp boxessss.wazza art craft Pullen.
I have electric guitar, and regular speaker, where there isn’t coming out the electric guitar sound. Will this compressor sustainer make a difference ? (Thx)
CP1X. Sounds fuller and warmer. CS 3 too shril and thin sounding.
Is there a pedal that does both?
I sold CS-3 cos it sucked tone like mad. Best decision I made to date.
Some compressors with tone control knob?
Queue up the "older is better" comments
Is it noisy with distortion?
I notice the CS-3 is more closer to a vintage tone and the CP-1X have that special modern tone, anyway the differences are so little.
I like CP-1x more than CS-3. CP-1x is punchier and modern to my ears.
would this work for a bass (I know there's a bass compressor but I just have the money for one of this cuz it's on sale
It would but the bass version would be better. This uses digital circuitry than analyzes your signal so each version is optimized for the frequency spectrum of guitar or bass. Good luck!
Interesting
CS 3 sounds much better.
Compressor pedals....only mxr ' , can plays better.. ....
Dbx 160 xt kills both of these trashy boss pedals
These comparison videos do not help me what so ever. Never have and never will. I do not hear any difference between the two pedals using computer speakers. Regarding audio, it's best to compare both units in person. That is just my personal opinion.
Use headphones dude, there is a huge difference!

I need to know what the knobs do this was not helpful at all thumbs down

No sound?
What do you mean?
Completely dead?
If it is, then either try to swap the guitar or the cable or the amp
Just borrow your friend's for a moment
This pedal is for enhancing your sound not to fix it
