Tired of the smoke, the smog, and the spoiled females of London, Frederick Hawkins leaves the city behind and purchases an estate in Cornwall, longing to escape his mother’s meddling-and to find a wife worthy of his devotion. When he happens upon a barefooted lady asleep on the beach and rescues her from the incoming tide, he believes he has found such a woman. But first impressions can’t be trusted.
Born into wealth, Sophia Rosewall is offered everything on a silver platter. That is, until her father reveals he has lost their fortune and can now no longer fund their affluent living. Even worse, the intriguing gentleman who’d rescued Sophia on the beach is no one else but the pretentious man now taking possession of her home. Uprooted from everything she has ever known, Sophia relocates to Lowena, a small cottage at the edge of the sea. She clings to her former life, but when Society rejects her, nothing will ever be the same.
As their paths continually cross, Frederick begins to see glimmers of the carefree Sophia he’d first met on the beach, and he cannot help but hope that there is more to the woman than a love of wealth and attention. He does what he can to help her find confidence in her new life and allow her true self to shine forth, but only Sophia can stop attempting to change her circumstances, and instead, change her heart.
This is the second book in the clean and sweet Regency Cornish Romance series by Deborah M. Hathaway. Although this enemies to love romance is a stand-alone novel, the books are best enjoyed when read in order.

I'm doing my happy dance here!!! I had hoped there would be more from MsHathaway! A very bright & upbeat Authoress who's a rare talent for storytelling in these modern days! Nowadays, everybody puts so much smut in the story,it ruins the content altogether!!! I love these clean,wholesome stories! When you're done,you replay it right back,just to relive the adventure! These two are in my Favorites Cache!!! I can't wait for more! TYSM!!!

Your style of writing is great!!! I love the subtle plot twists / delivery of details.
However what has caused me to comment is one of the excellently timed ambient sounds. At 33:30 right after mr hawkins is introduced the seagulls go off and I thought it was a crowd cheering😂

This story has put me through quite the rollercoaster of emotions. So much so, that would snap at anyone who would dare to interrupt my listening 😅😅😅 (Sorry, my dear husband. Never come between a hopless romantic and a wonderful romance novel)

this novel made my heart flutter so. a cute amount of tension and desire between sophia and frederick 🫶 the story also reminded me a little bit of emma
this was a much lighter novel than golowduyn, but i enjoyed it all the same. you’re quickly becoming one of my fave authors from this genre!
p.s. i was also delighted to see that this is in the same world as the kendricks

I adored Book 1 so I am looking forward so much to book 2. The book so far is a nice snap shot of the foolishness of that era in how some of the 'have's' truely seemed to generally live in a world of how superior they were and 'SO' above the lesser folk ( who did most of their work for pittance) . A nice little story of how to find oneself and be more humble no matter how fortunate one finds oneself. Pride and foolishness usually gets tripped up. Looking forward to book 3 too. 😊

One point for the narrator is that, when pronouncing the names of the mines, the emphasis is on the second word. Wheal FORTUNE, Wheal JANE, Wheal MARTYN, the same way we say Mr JONES, Mr THOMAS. It might help in any further books.

Ok, but no!! I know that all these regency romances rely on the misunderstanding/jumping to conclusions trope, but the reasoning of the ML in this story borders on stupidity and his rudeness feels like abuse sometimes . He does not deserve a ”happy ending” - but unfortunately FL”s happy ending depends on him.
I absolutely see where you're coming from. Frederick is super hard sometimes on Sophia! Sometimes justified, sometimes not. Which was exactly why he needed a little humbling of his own before he got his happy ending. ;)
i really liked the premise but felt the main characters's development was very superficial. It really could have used more angst. she realized her mistakes way too fast with little trouble, just like him. the premise allowed to discuss things like how women had a small sense of worth and if you removed good circumstances a woman could quickly become impoverished, even being vulnerable to evil proposal from men around her....he was pretty arrogant and presumptuous as well. didnt see much groveling there....
I completely agree. He was extremely arrogant in his own way, just like Sophia! I like to believe that they both continue to work on being more humble and realizing that they both need to change for the better. ;)
I feel so embarrassed for Sophie. She is so thick headed.

I can totally see how annoying that would be! Hopefully you were able to imagine something that worked better for you then. ;) As for myself, I'd never heard church bells before, so when I went to England for the first time and also heard the bells for the first time, it was the jolly sound and incredibly joyous feeling they invoked that has stuck with me for years! And that was exactly how Frederick felt listening to Sophia. He must not have grown up around them like you did! ;)
@@authordeborahmhathaway lol. Yeah. We had bells going off every day at noon and in May in the evenings as well, for weddings and for funerals. Bavaria has a LOT of churches lol church bells are loud. They are fun, but loud. I must say, I kinda miss them though since moving away and not hearing them any longer at all. It was more of a comfort than a joyous feeling for me, I guess. Just the feeling of routine, of community. I no longer go to church, or believe, so maybe that has put me off a bit as well. I am always weary when there are religious connotations anywhere. My own hangups. Doesn't make a book good or bad.

Sorry, this second book which often is harder to write than the eminent first in your series( why a series..?) I read thousands of books and this one is sadly not good.
