I should probably always bake that into the description because I've made so many videos since then. However, I strongly believe it was the Tascam Mixcast 4. Thanks for asking this question as I'll start noting the equipment used in videos going forward.
This is an excellent overview of budget / lower mid-priced microphones. Considering sound signature, build quality, and on camera appearance my vote - like yours - goes to the Zoom ZDM-1. To my ears, the PodMic sounds thin and a touch too bright absent EQ correction from the Rodecaster Pro (or perhaps OBS) when streaming or EQ adjustments in post. For me, the prime factor in deciding whether to purchase a microphone is sound quality. I've done hundreds upon hundreds of Zoom calls, podcasts, videos, and online streams with multiple different microphones. I've never had anyone comment on how any given mic looks. For me, it's all about sound and the quality of content. Thanks for creating this overview microphone video. I'm sure it will help many people purchase the right microphone for them.
Stephen this is a fantastic comment! Thank you for posting your take. People think I'm a Zoom shill but I never recommend their P8 interface due to it recording 44.1 kHz 16 bit and not 48 kHz 24 bit. But the ZDM-1 microphone is an entirely different story. I think there's a tiny minority of people who point and laugh at microphones on occasion. I've been mocked on stream before but more often I think it's the content creators themselves who want to "look the part". I've noticed if the microphone sounds good I'll get "hey, what microphone is that?" comments. But if it doesn't sound good to them then I can get trolled. I really hope this video is helpful for some "would-be" purchasers out there. It was a lot of editing to put this together. From 35 minutes down to under 11 minutes.

Something important that you mention during the course of this episode... It's important to fit the mic to the voice. A mic that sounds great on one person can sound absolutely terrible on someone else. This is a truth for every mic ever made.
Most certainly. I love the sound of certain mics on other people, then use it for myself and often not impressed. Plus our ears are all different. Some people hear stuff and say "that's sweet" and I say "that's crap." What do they say, people over 30 can't hear frequencies over 17kHz? Something like that.
Okay, I loved this video! My main microphone used to be the PreSonus PD-70. I got a RØDE PodMic as a guest mic, and while I love the mic, I found it pulled out a bit too much low end for me. It's fine on my voice, since I already have a pretty low speaking voice, but I found that I needed to boost lower frequencies on some guests. At the same time I ended up getting the Shure SM7B, which is now my main, and I gave my PD-70 to my fiancée, who co-hosts with me. I have the TASCAM TM-70 but only because it came with my Mixcast 4. I tried it on one podcast, and it was okay, but I wasn't impressed. But I can't complain since it was technically free for me. I'm really interested in the Zoom after watching the video. I'll have to check it out, especially for that price.
It sounds like you have a fantastic setup! I absolutely love the Zoom ZDM-1. I've bought 4 or 5 of them and given most to co-hosts while keeping 1 for myself. That is so cool you get to podcast with your fiancé! Couples that podcast together, stay together! :)
Hi and Thank You! I am a real newbie on the Microphones world and I need to setup a decent system for voiceover in my videos... This video was gold to me! While I cannot almost hear differences when watching your video trough my mobile phone, I definitely on my Pc with my monitor loudspeakers! I think you are right about the Zoom ZDM1: great sound, second only to the Shure MV7X!
Glad to hear the video was helpful. Thank you for checking out my channel. The Zoom ZDM-1 is a fantastic microphone value. It's great that at a fraction of the cost of the Shure MV7X the Zoom ZDM-1 holds its own.
Thank you for watching! I really enjoy giving my opinion on these mics. I can't wait until some new (affordable) gear launches. I think the Samson Q9X will be out in the summer as well as the 512 Audio Interface. I'm eager to do an "on-time" review. It would blow my mind if Zoom made another dynamic that was bigger like the SM7B. Thanks again.
I gotta say, after a year of use, the Podmic has served me well. Might just get the ZDM-1 later on because it's intrigued me for so long, and the price keeps dropping. It also looks pretty nice with the windshield on. Will stay a #RODEWarrior for now. Hahaha!
Sorry Carlos but your comment somehow got filtered. The PodMic is a solid mic. Extremely well constructed for sure. Zoom is making the ZDM-1 nearly impossible to resist. I love the #RODEWarrior comment! LOL!
...The Sure SM7B can be somewhat of a "plosive magnet..."😂 !! Your description reminds me of that scene in "Robots" where the lead character, Rodney, is running away from the magnetized pieces of scrap metal. As for the Rode looking the best but only sounding at its best with some post processing, I'll take the Zoom without any need for processing ANY day of the week, even if it isn't as flashy. If you're going to be on camera you can always put a little more flair into the mic stand for eye appeal. There are some nice looking ones out there.
I had to go watch that scene so I could get the reference. LOL! Good one. I wouldn't trade my ZDM-1 for any other "budget" microphone out there. I've been seeing some great desk stands and boom arms. When I upgrade I'm going to get something with some appeal.

Would like to see your take on the BM800 microphone, how it stacks up to the ones featured here.
I will add that microphone to my list along with the Behringer XM8500. Thank you for mentioning it. I'm going to go look it up right now.

why all mic sound like similar, which audio interface use with all mic
Once audio gets compressed by UA-cam it will sound somewhat similar without the use of high quality, over-the-ear headphones.

The Rode Podmic sounds thin and weak in every review I see.
It's definitely a thinner sounding mic when compared to the ZDM-1 and some others.
right
Thanks, appreciate the reviews! Always looking to see what's out there. Yeah, others have liked that Zoom mic, too. I'm going to look at it!

I would include the FDUCE SL40 in this group. Love the SL 40 and the Zoom ZDM 1
Dale would you say the FDUCE is better than that new Maono PD100 mic Obscur Mics likes?
@@FreePodcastTools I have a PD 100, limited use so far, I like it but, I like the FDUCE better. I would put it on the same level as the ZDM 1
@@dalebishop2632 hmmm, maybe I'll have to try one for myself and compare it to my other budget mics.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this.
MXL and Zoom sounded best in this vid. good work man.
Thank you for the positive comment! I am the biggest Zoom ZDM-1 fan you'll find. I honestly think it's a great mic.
When you said four of these for 200£, my jaw dropped, I am too cheap to buy a 50€ mic and I am constantly looking for better cheaper alternatives.

For some it most certainly is, buddy...
