Aemmer Couloir, Mount Temple - Episode 14 - The Classic Flow

- The Aemmer couloir is roughly a 1,900’ direct couloir off the North Flank of Mount Temple. This line is an obvious classic for it’s aesthetic draw outside the Canadian town of Lake Louis. Truly, this is a great intro to ski mountaineering line that has some complexity, a large mountain next to it, but is a straightforward ascent and descent. Essentially you get the feeling you’re in the big mountains without having to deal with exposure and tricky route finding that typically comes with big mountains.
This was actually the first line I skied in Canada from the season of 2022 - preceding the Comstock, Young’s Traverse and a variety of other non-50 classic lines I skied while in the area.
The Classic Flow is a multi-part series that will dive intimately into the journey of Michael Wirth (a 24 year old ski mountaineer) climbing and skiing 31 of the Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America in just a single season. I hope you subscribe to stay tuned into the many more to come soon.
I embarked on this journey due to the fear of imminent last descents among these lines. With the climate changing rapidly, our snow is disappearing in many places. As a kid from the Aspen Valley, I grew up with Chris Davenport’s, Art Burrow’s and Penn Newhard’s book, The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America, looming as a distant dream. Cody Townsend’s FIFTY project has also been a sense of motivation and inspiration to take on the challenge of skiing a variety of these lines - what an adventure? Thus, I set out in January of 2022 to ski as many lines as possible in one season to discover what was possible from the logistic, technical and endurance capacities of myself.
Carly Valerious illustrated the animated intro sequence and worked with the talented editor Rainy Adkins to bring it to final animated form. I can’t thank these two enough for their work on this.

As always, good stuff. I also love seeing the increased support from the sport for your endeavors.
Always amazing
working at lake louise as an instructor this year everyday looking at that couloir thinking what it would be like to ski it, you are nuts with our snow pack this season to go down there lol massive respect bro
Great video. Just when i was about to give up on this winter.
M8, what's the intro song?
Also, you should make a video about your risk awareness while soloing consequential lines like this. It would be super helpful for people who are thinking about soloing
Super solid solo mission! Mt. Temple is a BEAST of a hill! Well done!!! 🙏🏾❄
They have signs on the Trans-Canada Westbound telling drivers to ignore their GPS because that stretch of road closes so often :P Weird that it sent you that way at all instead of up the QE2 to Calgary
Awesome conditions! and such a cool line!
✊keep up the good work.
O hell yea Mike! you a monster
Any more vids?
I subbed cuz I saw that couloir before and wanted to see if anyone would ski down that couloir.
Super silly intro. love it.
FUCK YES!!!!
Nice job. Do you know if there's a distributor in Canada for Summa tape
Another great one, Michael, thanks! Looks like you had fantastic snow, made it a lotta fun for sure. But still a beast of a day! I noticed when you clicked in, you locked the front toepiece, just curious if this is something you do always or is it condition dependent. Thanks again! Paul
Kinda depends. I currently am using ATK and have a lot of success not locking. I had prereleased a few times on the setup in this video.
I also do this, but only in hard conditions and high consequence terrain, where I definitely don't want to loose a ski accidentally. I switch back to ski mode as soon as the critical part is finished.
@@michaelcwirth Thanks!
@@thorstenreitz7302 Thanks!
31 lines or 14 lines? why did the videos stop?
If it’s not on UA-cam must’ve never happened 😂
Are Breckenridge distillery etc sponsoring you? I find it hard being small and getting sponsors
Wtf route did you take to Lake Louise from MT that would send you to golden?! Quick stopover in Van?!
Imagine if he used Mapquest 😮
@@nuradioconcepts … I think he did. Literally every path to lake Louise takes you to Calgary, or through radium and over without going to Golden… very confused how he ended in golden first
I just wanted to go to my fave coffee shop in Golden beforehand if you want the full truth. Then the one was closed :(
What happened to this guy?
If you can't bother to tele, we can't bother to watch because it's too boring.
Don't be a loser man
