As much as I couldn't imagine Forest Gump without Tom Hanks who's to say John Goodman wouldn't have been good in the role? HAVE YOU SEEN 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE OR THE BIG LEBOWSKI?!?
I know not everyone who was a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Total Recall knew about the book it was based on (We can remember it for you wholesale) and only referred to the Colin Farrell film as just a remake. (Or that oddly enough Arnold Schwarzenegger's autobiography also called Total Recall was released the same year)
And not to mention the fact that Forrest Gump completely changed the story. Even the opening line. In the book it was "life ain't no box of chocolates". Movie is good, but will never be as good as the book was.
10- Not surprised. I did hear it was based on a kids book. 9- WHAT!?!?!?!? It's quite popular! 8- Yes, I knew it was a book! Though a few years ago. 7- Again, I fucking knew it before. 6- Yeah, that I didn't. 5- Ehhhhhh, it's a bit far fetch to call it based on the book when it was remaking the 1932 film, which I had a feeling was already based on a book to begin with. After all, it was based on Al Capone, so... 4- Okay, that I'll admit I didn't. 3- Yeah, again, I'll admit. 2- Okay, that was shocking. HMs: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days- Didn't know, but let's be honest, I think people forgot about the movie altogether. There Will Be Blood- I didn't know know, but I had a feeling it was anyway. Trainspotting- Eh, not a big fan of the film. It's been awhile. I can't say I'm shocked. 1- Believe it or not, I actually did knew it was based on a book though not long ago. I heard they took some liberties by changing the original character's name to McClane. Aside from 6, 4, 3, 2, and How to Lose a Guy (which I said was a forgotten movie already), that's 4 or 5 (if you include How to...) out of 13. That's still more than half. Honestly, WM needs to get their shit together because this was a really poor list. Really, 90-95% are adaptations of something, usually books especially something popular. Hell, aside from The Catcher in the Rye, name me a major book that wasn't adapted into a movie. Come on!
Thought Life of Pi, Fifty Shades of Grey, Great Gatsby and Eat Pray Love, Alex Cross, Blue Lagoon, Gone Girl and others. Would be up here, guess I was wrong !!
How tf is Shrek not on here? No one knows about the book the movie is based on. I know there's already a DreamWorks Animation movie on this list, but Shrek definitely deserves a place on here.
you prolly dont give a damn but does any of you know a way to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost the login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me
Jbird1004 You're thirteen and you still don't know the difference between "To" "Too" and "Two?" I'm fourteen and I'm sure that was something I learned when I was seven.
In that case, Edge of Tomorrow should have been mentioned. I'll tell you, I was a little confused when I was living in Japan, and Tom Cruise "Thank you Japan" videos started coming up on UA-cam for "All You Need is Kill". (And of course I can't find a link of video).
On a similar subject, how about top 10 movie adaptations that are completely different/nothing like from their source material? Ndima Silwana if you are talking about Pitch Perfect, I think the writers of the movie used the book as an inspiration to understand how acapella groups work and see the competetion/riveraly from inside an accapela group and kind of based storyline around that so the book wasn't really a musical. Does that make sense?
What about "Neverending Story"? I have heard that many americans didn't actually know it was based on a book by the german childbook author Michael Ende
Charles Walter The neverending story is a fantasy novel written by german writer Michael Ende. I don't know if it's well known in the USA but it's a very famous book all over Europe
How to train your dragon the book is very much not the movie. Toothless is, in the book, extremely tiny, most dragons were. He also wasn't a nightfury, he was a green dragon that could smell things really well.
most movies are based on books like: The Martian, Armageddon, The Arrival, The Batman Series, Star Trek, All DC and Marvel movies, Jumanji, The Maze Runner, The Divergent, Son of God, and many many more.
And the books were often so much better. The Maze Runner books were just amazing, one of my favorite series, but the films were trash compared to them. First film was decent but the Scorch Trials film was awful.
Ah, there we are. Armageddon "based on the screenplay." I mean, I could have believed that load of dirty money was bastardized from a novel, but I was still skeptical. And was Star Trek mentioned because of being modeled after Gulliver's Travels?

while the books and the movies were very different, I don't think the film (at least the first one) was bad. Overall the books were much better especially the last 3 books in the series and even though the film won't be able to ever compare, it was still pretty good.
marmaladesnails I get what you mean, but the film worked and was good to many people who hadn't read the books. The film was what got me interested in the book series in the first place so for that I class it as a success.
most of this list was well known already as being books first. only some of the facts about them were surprising. if your going to label this as movies that were books first you need to find ones that no one knows they were books to begin with. like cruel intentions is actually based off a 18th century book.
Cruel Intentions (and the movie was a remake of who's names escape me) are less well known for being based on a book that Forrest Gump or How To Train Your Dragon I admit, but I think a lot of people know that one too. Problem is when a movie becomes popular word gets out it's based on a book. So the only way to truly give a list most avid readers would not be familiar with would be to get movies that did not do well but were based on a book. Which would not be an interesting list.
DanTheMan i agree in it being difficult. but i could find probably a dozen movies that were popular during their time but are not currently well remembered to do a list about. like 'the running man', an arnold swartzeneger(i know i misspelled it) flick from the 80's. it is not remembered by a lot of people but it is well liked. and most importantly its based on a novellette by richard bachmann, which happens to be the pen name for stephen king.
Brian Wise I do agree not sure how you would do research on this but as you said Running Man, Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, Christine even off the top of my head were popular successful movies that are probably less common knowledge were based on books than half this list. They did not research it well even for them.
Even though it wasn't on this list, until recently I never knew Stand By Me was based off of the book The Body which is weird for me as I pretty much spent most of my teenage years reading Stephen King books
One of my mottos: If you like the movie, you'll love the book. Books invariably give more back story, more character development and usually tell a more (and often multiple) subtle story.
Well, considering Gump from the book and Gump from the movie are essentially two different people, yes, Goodman would not have been a good fit for the movie. However, had the movie stayed true to the book - he would've been perfect.
@R2MI390 - I agree with you. I just saw the 1987 movie version of "The Running Man" on DVD and it really was nothing like the original novel by Richard Bachman (Stephen King). I just hope that someday that there be a remake of the movie so that it would be MORE FAITHFUL to the book.
it might be safer to assume that a movie is based on a book unless you learn otherwise - often the adapted book is all over bookshops (as with THE EXORCIST and JAWS) which is a bit of a giveaway. But if one is even vaguely interested in such things, how does one not notice the screenplay credit while watching the movie? THERE WILL BE BLOOD might have claimed a kinship with OIL!, but there is infinite distance between Upton Sinclair, and Daniel Day Lewis shouting in a moustache
Yes, yes I have. :) They're much different than the movies, yet the same in some ways, and they've got better villains imo. They start out a bit childish, but the dry humor is amazing throughout the series, and from book 8 (the series has 12) onwards it gets really intense, and suddenly all the little things that happened along the way become very important. I'm a big fan of the books and movies both. :)
Don't they all say "based on ___" in the opening credits? I mean, I get that people ignore the closing credits but I'd think they watch the opening ones.
The only one I didn't know about was Pitch Perfect. Anyways, I think *Tarzan, Jurassic Park and Breakfast at Tifffany's* should be on the list, or mentioned :)
Read the novel Forest Gump years before it was made into a movie. Even bought the book as a gift for friends. This book actually made me laugh out loud. If you haven't read it yet please do so. So different than the movie. Of the 30k copies sold before the movie, I bought 5 of them. 😊
cause the game was based of a movie and a movie was based on a novel or book whatever it's the same as bram stokers dracula instead of dracula there's you there the warriors
When I was 15 when the first Lord Of The Rings movie came out, I honestly didn't know that movie, as well as the whole trilogy, didn't know it was based on a book.
the list:

Don't forget the Polar Express.
Also "Rum Punch" by Elmore Leonard, which became the third film by Quentin Tarantino, "Jackie Brown".
How is "Who Framed Rodger Rabbit" not even an honorable mention.
top 10 Pixar movies that should be live action
None of them
Now THAT I can agree with. Live action Pixar films? No thank you.
I knew that both Forrest Gump, The Exorcist, Jaws, and First Blood were based off books because I read them.
Richard Espindola Both? Both is for two bud. You listed four.
Pitch Perfect as a book?! That actually sounds so cool!
I knew Forrest Gump and Jaws were a book
How to train your dragon is awsome!I'm glad they made Toothless a big, ridable dragon in the movies since he was a small dragon in the novels.

Sarah R, You're right.
Sarah R the character was very different in the book.
TheYuriBabe, like what?
Maybe so, but I mean the way the character is written in the movie.
Sarah R, what's wrong?
Who the f**k didn't know The Exorcist was a book? This list is awful. I was expecting movies like The Warriors or Logan's Run or something
Missed one:
Who Framed Roger Rabbit, based off the book Who Censored Roger Rabbit.
On a similar subject, how about top 10 movie adaptations that are completely different/nothing like from their source material? So basically movies with the same, or similar titles, but completely different stories. like 1995 Judge Dredd, or the 1992 movie "Lawnmower man" which was allegedly based on the Stephen King short, but if you've ever read the actual short, it's nothing alike. (Spoilers: The Stephen King short is actually about a man who calls a lawn care service, and when the man shows up to mow his lawn, he turns out to be a monstrous satyr who starts eating his lawn)
King even had to take the studio to court to force them to stop claiming that the film was based on his story.
Roger Rabbit is another one of those. It was based on a book but other than 3 of the characters having the same names and a couple of the more popular one liners being in both versions the book is basically a completely original story.
Forrest Gump should be on that list as well.
Stephanie Martin so should How to Train your Dragon
There's also Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. It keeps the a few of the names and the Headless Horseman's origin as a Hessian soldier but that's about it.

#8 if you saw the movie, you know that it says in the opening credits that it is based on a novel. Therefore, it should not be on this list.
Good thing I didnt see movie then
One of my mottos: If you like the movie, you'll love the book.
They forgot to include "The Running Man", which happens to be based on a book by Stephen King.
Under psudynm Richard Bachman
I forgot to be honest, but I remember now. :)
The movie has nothing to do with the book
@R2MI390 - I agree with you. I just saw the 1987 movie version of "The Running Man" on DVD and it really was nothing like the original novel by Richard Bachman (Stephen King). I just hope that someday that there be a remake of the movie so that it would be MORE FAITHFUL to the book.
But you know it was based off a book so that isnt the point of the list
it might be safer to assume that a movie is based on a book unless you learn otherwise - often the adapted book is all over bookshops (as with THE EXORCIST and JAWS) which is a bit of a giveaway.
Everyone knew the exorcist, jaws, first blood and die hard were based of books
james howe shame on you
The Warrior Teddy and forest gump
What Harry Potter was based off a book WTF no way!

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON???

VEJN But they are very different...
Yeah! And the books are SO WORTH IT.
peanutbutterpickles You've read them?
Yes, yes I have. :)
They're much different than the movies, yet the same in some ways, and they've got better villains imo. They start out a bit childish, but the dry humor is amazing throughout the series, and from book 8 (the series has 12) onwards it gets really intense, and suddenly all the little things that happened along the way become very important.
I'm a big fan of the books and movies both. :)

What about Jurassic Park, Psycho, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Howl’s Moving Castle ?
Exorcist 3 should have at least gotten honorable mention. It was based on William Blatty's book Legion.
How is Jaws on this list? It’s advertised as “the most terrifying motion picture from the terrifying No 1 best seller.”
Bruce Willis was a TV comedy show actor?! No wonder Death Becomes Her
😆
Don't they all say "based on ___" in the opening credits? I mean, I get that people ignore the closing credits but I'd think they watch the opening ones.
Why has no one fucking know that HTTYD was a book series?! I read books when I was in 6th grade!

Die-hard is based on a novel? I fell backwards knowing that.
Read the novel Forest Gump years before it was made into a movie. Even bought the book as a gift for friends. This book actually made me laugh out loud. If you haven't read it yet please do so. So different than the movie. Of the 30k copies sold before the movie, I bought 5 of them. 😊
Jurassic Park is one movie I didn’t know that was based on a novel.

"I Know What You Did Last Summer" was based on a mystery novel from the 70's. It was reprinted after the film's success.
