    Thank you for making this video! I have seen other clay recycling videos, but never with porcelain. I've heard that porcelain does not recycle well. Clearly it does!! Thank you so much for all of the knowledge you share.

    Porcelain trimmings can be made into colored engobe slips used on stoneware clays. Coat the insides of bowls and mugs for a brighter glaze. Use colored porc engobes on the outside or stoneware with scraffitto or carving.

    I used to believe that you could only trim the bottom of the vessel & the walls should have been pre-determined. But now I understand that it is a requirement to have a thicker wall sometimes to advance further & that it can be easily trimmed at the leather hard stage for optimal weight & balance. The trimmings would then be recycled. Thank you.

      Trimming the piece at beginning of the video was one of my student’s work. It was so thick and heavy but I think it was perfect fit for the demo because I need a lot of trimmed clay to fill my bucket/bag.

    Great method to combine different types of left over clay. I will try this and store it for awhile see how that goes:)

    Love watching your video. I have a question: I accidentally spilled glaze on the soil which about to be recycle when I was doing glazing. May I know what will happen if I recycle the soil with glaze? Thank you so much ❤

      A small amount should be ok.

    I would consider changing the shape of the plaster bed to maximize surface area contacting the clay.

    Hi, was wondering if there is a limit as to how many times a batch of porcelain can be reclaimed. Should I be adding something during the process? My last piece (the end of a particular porcelain), a simple flower pot developed an s crack while drying under cover. I make it a habit to compress quite a bit. Sides and bottom were about 3/8” thick. I probably reclaimed that clay at least 6 times. Thanks you for your thoughts.

      @hsinchuen  2 роки тому

      3/8” is fairly thick. I’d make the bottom thinner, less than 1/4”. Multiple time reclaiming is ok. If you find the clay is not plastic, you could add a bit fresh clay to balance out.

    I recycle porcelain quite often. Do you feel that the original properties are altered because of recycling?

    • @hsinchuen
      @hsinchuen  2 роки тому

      I don’t think so but you have to let the clay completely soak into the water. Ideally a couple more days before pour out.

    I have been recycling my own and other peoples clay for a long time. Is there a way to get rid of the black mold in the clay? Also if I rehydrate with vinegar and water will that keep it from growing mold?

    • @hsinchuen
      @hsinchuen  2 роки тому

      If leave the clay in the water for a long period of time it will get black mold and smell stinky. To me, I don’t mind the mold and the smell, however you could recycle just like I did in the video. Cumulate the trimmed clay in a bag and add water as needed. That way you can avoid the clay from getting mold and stinky smell.

      The mold is considered a good benefit to the placticity of the clay.
      Changing the PH value of the clay is not a good idea. If the smell is unacceptable, try mixing the slip introducing oxygen to the mix will prevent the most smelly bactiria from over growing.

    What's the difference between your plaster and your wedging table?

    • @hsinchuen
      @hsinchuen  2 роки тому +1

      Wedging table is flat while recycling plaster bat has a dip so that the slip is not overflowing.

    I was very nervous while watching this video because you are not wearing a mask. The silica in dry clay is very bad for your lungs.
