If you come from Thailand, you have to come to Yangon first. Then, take a bus from Yangon to Kanpetlet which is around 730 km and 12 Hours drive. So, I would recommend you to visit Bagan (one of the top bucket lists for most travelers around the world) first, then you may go from Bagan to Kanpetlet.
Travelling there with friends must be very enjoyable.
