- This is a series where I introduce you to Aussie Bands from the 70's right through to 2000's. Aussie bands that even though they didn't make it onto the international music scene had a huge impact on the Aussie music scene and had a huge following in Australia.
Part 1 is dedicated to a 3 piece band who had a number of hits on the ARIA charts. Spy Vs Spy
Links to the Spy Vs Spy Facebook site where you ca enjoy more of the bands music videos.
One of my all time favourite bands. Still on my everyday playlist.
I cannot think of a better band to start your series with. The world needs to know the SPYs.
How true is that mate. Saw them live dozens of times and they were AMAZING. I believe Cliff Crigg has got a new line up and touring. He's taking over were the the late Michael WeileyThanks for comments mate. Go the SPYS.
@@peteszone6058 I saw that Cliff is playing again. Craig is now building basses and guitars.
KenOath!!
Mike's playing was so integral to this bands sound. His impossible to find solo album Honey Island project is a complete stunner. For a 3 piece band the Spies had a huge live sound and energy to match. Sadly we have lost Mike, Craig no longer plays but the band limps on with Cliff coming back to drums. But sadly as this band contortions through various lineup changes over the past 20 years the DNA is so distorted we lost the incredible backbone that Craig Bloxom added to the band. Imagine The Police without Sting, it won't work, same with Spy V Spy, Craig is a keystone to so many songs. Hearing a song like Clarity Of Mind without Mike singing and playing just doesn't work, only Mike had the magic guitar style that's so important to this song. Sadly the band today is like a photocopy of a photocopy done 20 times over. Sure it's important to keep the music alive but these is a point where enough is enough because it's destroying the amazing memories of long ago. Maybe a keen young band could pick up on some songs and breath fresh life into what are incredible live music songs. The future is always in the command of the young.
Hey Leo old friend! I understand your sentiments and I think I know how you're feeling. The original Spys will stand as the archetype of the music and losing Mike was a blow. Nobody can sing Clarity of Mind like he did. But I tell you what, I'm going to have a go at it soon and record it reggae style just to keep the song alive and give it a new twist. And I think it's the same with Cliffs New Reasons Spys..... they are keeping the music alive and doing their own versions of the old stuff but more than that they've made a really good album with new material that I'm pleased to say sounds to me like the old Spys mixed with a bit of Midnight Oil and other Aussie musos. Cliffs mates Dean, Cam and Andrew are top blokes and I give them my blessing. It's fantastic to see Cliff so happy again smashing away on his drum kit with some great guys who pay respect to the old Spy songs but have also come up with their own songs to share. I like them. I support them. However, I understand what you say about the band without Mike or myself but that's all over now. It's dear to our hearts and brings great memories. They were halcyon days back in the 80's and thanks to people like you we have videos we can watch of those times. Thanks again Leo, we owe you buddy. Best regards and much love to you and your family. Thanks for preserving some Aussie rock history. Bloxy (OH! Richie Lara & myself and a drummer called Chris are recording a bunch of Spys Jets Aussie songs reggae-style and hope to have and album out by the end of the year)
Hey Paul @Paul Taylor not sure what you mean about “wizard things” do you mean the 3 hooded figures on the beach?
@@craigbloxom8181 Craig it's lovely to hear your thoughts here. I could see back in the mid to late 90's the music scene was starting to suffer i'm glad I could capture a snapshot of that time. I'm not sure if you watch Japanese rock musicians emulate the classic bands and music of the US and UK. And this style of copying is done to such a high degree of accuracy. A prime example is Akio Sakurai, or Mr Jimmy. He is like a reincarnation of Jimmy Page in playing style and live performance, so impressive the real Jimmy Page has been to his performances. So to get to my point I see young South American bands doing really good copies of your Spies songs. Seeing this to me is how the music is kept alive. The youth can tap into the spirit you had when you were young far better than people getting on in years trying to be 20 again. I struggle when I see the DNA of the music being altered, it's way more important to do the best emulation and study of a style and sound. Blox i've been watching you selling the guitars on Gumtree, maybe I need to get off my backside and drive up from Berowra to buy a Bass. Good luck with your new works.
@@craigbloxom8181 hey would love to see you do some UA-cam videos showing us how you played bass or even talking about some of those great songs we all miss!
A great idea @@bradhienzachary maybe one day I'll do something like that!
I love V Spy V Spy since I was a 16 age-old teenager and actually I had the privilege to listen to them in an unforgetable show and then me and my sister talked with them. It was amazing. This is the best surfing music band ever, in my opinion. RIP Mike.
Hey Pete! Thanks for the awesome history and kudos for the Spys! You must be a bloody legend mate! Very informative and interesting, I look forward to hearing about other Aussie bands from the days when music was EVERYTHING! Rock on and thanks! 🇦🇺
Thank CB...Sure miss the good ol days when we all looked forward to going to gigs every Fri & Sat nights. You are a bloody legend buddy. Your bass lines to this very day blow me away as do your lyrics and they way you delivered them with such passion. The Spies will always be my all time favourite Aussie 3 piece band. It was sad to hear of MW passing. Also see that Cliffy is getting his version of Spies together for another round. Take care of yourself and Noamsy....
@@peteszone6058 we're so lucky to have lived through the great days of Aussie rock 'n roll in the pubs through the '80's. They were great times. Cliff is carrying on the Spys with some great lads supporting him..... I just heard their new album and it's really fantastic! Similar themes to the old Spys but with a new flavour about the band.... they have my full support. It was sad to lose Mike Weiley but his legendary guitar lives on..... thanks again for the great kudos Pete, rock on! Bloxy
Love ya Blox n thanks cob
@@Cranknfodder ur the worst singer ive ever had the displeasure to listen to
@@craigbloxom8181 their new album ? Whos they?
Absolutely Love V Spy V Spy! Way ahead of Their Time! Saw them So Many Times in Sydney! Even Better, when My Fave Band "Midnight Oil" had Spys on Their Bill! AO TV Mod Vers will always be My Fave Album! So many great Songs on that! Thanks for Posting! 🕵🥁🎸🎼💖
Truly remarkable group of guys that are sadly missed.
Gday Spytatt. Thanks for watching mate. They are truly missed. Best 3 piece I saw live throughout the 80's & 90's.
Saw and met them many times in the late 80’s /early 90’s .Very original music and sound;especially Mike’s guitar.
Nice lads who for better or for worse didn’t quite have that big hit single. Great live!!
We all love the Spys !
Really miss the Spys, seen this band every time they come to Perth back in the heyday, when pub rock was king
Thanks for watching mate. I grew up listening to their cds and live gigs and I seen alot of live acts in my day and they would have to be in my top 10 live acts of all time.
Spys!!! Saw them every time they came to Perth back in the 80s!! I now live in USA and recently got reunited with all my Spys LPs - such a great 3 piece who made some great albums!
Spy's for me anyday, True Aussie Rock Legends👍👍👍
The Spy's had/have a massive following in Brazil - Os Brasileros os amam! Muito Bom!
Tight energy
I saw Spy V Spy several times (the first time was in the 1980’s), and they were brilliant live, it’s criminal Spy v Spy never got the recognition they truly deserved.
Hugely underrated band.
Saw the Spys plenty of times in Sydney pubs in 1990/91. Blox was a great frontman and they made a great sound for a 3-piece. In my top 10 favourites.
One of my favorite Aussie bands from that era. Great pub band. There's always something so honest about a 3 piece combo. Saw them a few times.
Great concept. Let's get the Aussie bands out there. Please get some Kevin Borich / Kevin Borich Express clips out there. The man is still touring to this day.
Here in Brazil, we love vSpy vSpy (Spy vs Spy)… Ok, it’s more restricted to surfers from 90’s or someone related with them. That’s my case…
i'm a big fan from Brasil
best ever 3-piece band ever in Australian history
After the sharp,lolz
Spy vs spy forever in memory
Miss this band! Is there any interviews with Craig Bloxom?
My Favourites were Credit Cards, Harrys Reasons and Mugshot.
Great vid
I thought Spy V Spy were from England, luv the sound of 80’s Aussie rock
best oz rock band imo
Agree 1000%. Thanks for watching 🤟
This band was incredible!!
Great band
Thanks for doing a bit on the Spy's. As an U.S. person we never did discover Spy V Spy. I was introduced to them by the new lead singer Dean Reynolds when I randomly met him while travelling Indonesia. They were and still are a amazingly talented group. I am glad you gave them a nod in your series.
Thanks for watching Mark. Was always surprised that Spy V Spy didn't do well in the USA. Their catalogue of music is very impressive. Check it out
Surely one of the great aussie pub bands of the 80's, but you can't go past The Angels, an epic pub band also.
They were awesome
If TISM doesn't make an appearance on this list, you're not serious.
Love Spy v Spy or V. spy V. spy… sad though how all these hipsters who claim to be in love with old Aussie bands don’t even know them… fuck I love fake people 😂😂😂
are there any more follow ups to this?
restarting shortly. Thanks for watching
Hey Pete, You must be a time traveler. The date on this video is 1st April.
The boys had to add the "V" when going to register the name after finding out there was a N.Z band "The Spies" .. Cool series, Is Dear Enemy getting any air time?? . .
Love the Spy's. But I like a few Dear Enemy tunes too.
Thanks Pete, great track, I also love Credit Cards, insane guitar riff.
PS - you might want to update your intro at 1:16, should be "to" not "too"!
Great but so is Harry’s reasons
They were the best!!! Dunno why Blox give it away?? Although Mick had died, Craig shoulda continued with the same winning formula..... but he was off somewhere being a cook. Now, many years later, he's back and doing some reggae thing that just ain't working !!! So if you're reading this, Blox...... get that thing cut off the back of your neck and start writing good old Spy songs again. The huge Fan base is still out there, Bro!!!!!
Thank for watching mate. Bloxman is still playing, his band Reggae Spy's have just released their 1st single R U OK here's the link.
