FREE SCRAP SHED. CABIN PROJECT #4

  • In this video, I am using all the free scrap wood I can find on my cabin property to make my shed. Choosing to do this makes the construction complicated and time-consuming. But, it is so fun to do. Figuring out how to fit all the weird pieces together is really cool and it makes for an awesome-looking cabin.

It doesn’t matter that the shed is not “perfect “….. it’s perfect for you and your needs and that’s all that really matters. I love that you used what you had on site and didn’t just let the materials go to waste.

Jay a roll of tyvek will weather proof the outside of the shed.
Also an idea. Some sheds and outhouses in Alaska use the corrugated pvc panels on the roof to let natural light in and the snow slides off.

Jay, this video was my favorite. You are figuring things out as you go along and not being wasteful. I love that you are being frugal and showing your internet family how things can be recycled and repurposed to make something new. I was so happy throughout this video and was talking to you (my laptop) as you made one decision after the other. Then you capped it all off by figuring out the propane issue. I actually gasped when the pilot lit up. YOU ROCK!!!

You made a sensible choice between a pile of lumber beneath the cabin and a shed. Don't worry about the patchwork design, a coat of paint and nobody will notice.

Love what you are doing. Incredible backdrop.
Now the propane…that screw on the tank is the liquid fill. When filling the tank, that screw is opened and when liquid begins to come out, the tank is at 80%. That is all that propane tanks get filled to. I think what is happening to you is the “OPD” (overfill protection device) will “slug shut” if the tank is opened quickly and gas is trying to fill that long gas line going to your stove. That OPD thinks there might be a leak and slugs shut. It will reset itself after a period of time when the pressure gets pushed back on it. If you open the tank valve really slowly like just cracking it and let a slow release of gas to fill and pressurize the line then you will be fine. If the tank has gone completely empty, then after you pressurize the line and you hear the gas flowing at the stove, you can open all the burners at once to evacuate all the air out of that line. Be sure to keep a lit match at one of the burners so you know you are getting gas and not air. You can use 1 burner, it just takes longer. Be sure to lite the oven pilot too. Remember that all 3 pilots will be burning gas all the time so to save gas, turn the tank off completely when you are away.
Wish I could just head up there and help out. Keep up the good work and videos.

Enjoy your videos, Jay. Two small recommendations for your shed: 1) put a few cross-members/rafters from one side to the other; and 2) with just a small amount of house wrap covering the exterior of the shed, you'll get far more longevity out of it. Left to the elements, the bare plywood will take a beating and won't last long. Keep up the good work!

Jay, I really enjoy watching your channel. I'm learning right along with you. I just wanted to pass along some information:
    - the general rule of thumb for screw length is half the thickness of your bottom material. So, if you are attaching 3/4" (19mm) material into a 2 x 4 (1.5" x 3.5"), you want your screw to enter the 2 x 4 at least 3/4 an inch. That would mean your minimum screw length is 1.5".
    - fun fact, the distance from the tip of your thumb to the first knuckle is roughly 1".
    - On your stove, you may have dust in the gas orifices. You can try using a can of compressed air to blow the dust out. I have to do that once a year with my gas fireplace.
Hope these tips help. Keep on building and pushing yourself. You are doing amazing! Thanks for sharing with us!!

Great job on the shed Jay. By the way, whenever you disconnect the propane bottle each time you will need to bleed off the air that gets into the line between the bottle and the stove. And the best way to do that is to turn the knobs on all the way for 15-20 seconds until you get rid of the air, then it will light. The pilots won't light either till this is done.

Your shed reminds me of the camps we built when we were kids. Valuable lessons learned using scrounged material. We even reused our nails. Also, try running a wire through your stoves burner lines. I have found spiders like to build webs in them at it seriously impedes gas flow. Keep up the good work.

Tyvek wrap for a bit of waterproofing? Clear corrugated roofing to let light in? Great shed and learning. You go.

You should paint the name Frankenshed on the door! Way to use what you have!

So glad you got the stove working. The shed is looking mighty fine to me. Using scrap wood is smart. Slinters are no fun. I was thinking that on your way in next time, while in your boat out on the lake, do some fishing in the deeper water. If you do catch some fish, either put in a bucket of lake water or the frig. until you can get to them to clean for a meal.
