    For me this was my very first VR game... the moment that sold me is ... you know how in regular games you find yourself leaning side to side to see around the corners? (Pretty sure we all do it, and we all feel silly when we catch ourselves doing it) Well, I caught myself doing this in RE7 and it WORKED... that blew my mind and I was a believer. I know it sounds like something small and simple but it was totally profound at the moment.

      David Ouillette - agree completely! The ability to lean around corners, or railings, and lean closer to items than you ever can in regular 2D games.

      The dlc is good. Not all VR though. I'm actually enjoying the 21 card game in it. Like a sadistic version of Blackjack :)

      Dave Ashby the dlc is amazing. I love how fun 21 is and I only just wish that it had multiplayer. I would love to play this sadistic game of blackjack against people online or using couch co-op which would be perfect as it doesn't require vr.

      Dang! So you're a massive Fallout 3 fan too!? Yep, if I had to pick a favorite game of all time, it would be F3 as well, far too many late nights playing until 4 a.m. with that game! (C'mon, just 1 more side mission, lol) Good times, good times! Btw, the Capitol Wasteland blows New Vegas out of the water too! Can't wait to experience Res E 7 this holiday season as I gift myself a PSVR set finally.

    The RE engine is built from the ground up to optimize for vr. The reason it looks so real even if it's resolution isn't top notch is because the RE engine works with photographic inputs. It gives your brain enough info that it can fill in any detail that can't be seen with full clarity, similar to impressionist painting. I'm super stoked for future titles. I can't imagine them putting that much work into developing such a stellar engine if they didn't intend to stick with VR. Much love capcom! And much love without parole, great video guys!

    Yes, the real talent here for many VR developers is creating an immersive feeling and experience, no matter what the controls are. As soon as I put on the headset in this game, I'm immersed.
    However, I do agree that control schemes and methods can add or detract from a VR experience. But for this game, anyways, it's so well made, I really wouldn't worry about the controls and just enjoy the game!
    (Sorry, I just got my PSVR, and I had to comment.)
    Bry and Dez - long time listener, first time player! You guys do VR proud!

    I had one of those moments in re7. After getting the statue and jumping down the stairs, hung out in my safe room. Figured I had successfully gotten away. When going back to the main hall he busts through the wall in front of me. Thought I was going to have a heart attack

    Just going through your guys’ back catalog of review discussions (awesome BTW) and got to this one. RE7 is like the white whale of VR for me. Before I actually tried VR, on paper, this was something I circled as a game I couldn’t wait to experience. Then I got a PSVR and “tried” it. TRIED is as far as I can get. To this day, I cannot work up the nerve to fully dive into it. I even tried playing drunk. It didn’t help. Lol

      I was like that my first two tries at playing as well, totally petrified and only played for a short time each. On my third attempt, I got to the first real scary part and got through it, and it was pretty fun at the same time being scary. I kind of calmed down a bit after that, I saw what the game was gonna be throwing at me, how a scary part really felt, and I was able to put in long play sessions after that without issue. I still jumped a bit a few times and totally got chills through my entire body at other times, but was no longer scared to play at all.

    2019 and I love this channel more than ever. We all do!
    But I realized that what Bryan and Dez are talking about in the first 5 plus minutes boils down to essentially this - suspension of disbelief. It's a real thing and it obviously comes easier, or more naturally, to some people.
    It's not about who gets more scared, or how some people enjoy horror games and some can't stand them, or anything like that.
    The fact is, if when something "scary or dreadful" is happening or about to happen, and all you are thinking about is the game mechanics or what triggers certain events or npcs, then it's like looking behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz.
    If you are more preoccupied in what the devs laid before you to instigate a certain reaction or emotion, then you are not caught up in the story, or the game world, or what it would be like to really be in your character's shoes, which is the whole point of putting on the headset in the case of RE7, then at that time while you are playing the game, you have not achieved any kind of suspension of disbelief.
    And it's not something you really make happen. You achieve it like you would looking at those 3D pictures where you have to relax your eyes to see what is really in the picture. It's kind of the same thing here. You have to let it happen, allow it to happen, not make it or force it to happen.
    Like many people, Dez's brain is just more concerned with what is going on behind the scenes and whatever other preoccupations he may have at the time.
    Suspension of disbelief is sometimes hard for me, if I'm preoccupied with other stuff going on in my life, then I don't enjoy the game as much when that happens and I just call it a day!

    14hrs in VR though. When people breeze through the game I bet that's not in VR.
    I've been playing the banned footage dlc this week.... why did I force myself back into this nightmare!!? Loving it once again though.
    ...And Dez is dead inside :D
    I saw a video about the psychology of RE7 and it reveals a new level to the game design. Basically, you start out seeing the whole family and naturally due to other games, you know the 'bosses' will go from weak to hardest or in other words the son, the mother, then the dad. But RE7 does the opposite, you start with the big bad dad, which makes you feel powerless, but by the time the reach the mother and then the son you go through a personal transformation that mirrors Ethan's journey. By the end of the game you end up like rambo wiping the floor with the generic molded enemies. So like Ethan, you started scared of crawling un-armed through a house, to blasting away everything that moves like a bass ass and it wouldn't feel like that if Jack was the final boss like other games. That blow my mind.

    I try to explain to a friend of mine , that unless you played in VR , none of those scary games you played can compare to playing something in VR cause you are actually in the world and have no outside destractions , so he can understand unless he plays something like this in VR , if someone’s says it’s not scary , I would say have you played this game in VR , I had my daughters watching me play and they were thinkin it’s not that scary yet , I had them put the goggles on just for a moment and they were scared to even move down the hallway , lol

    The one good "Fright Fest" I ever went to was, believe it or not, at Knotts Berry Farm. We wanted to go to Disney or Universal but they are all sold out months ahead of time. We settled for Knotts and it turned out to be amazing. There were about a dozen "Haunted Houses", all good, all scary, but the best thing was they turned the whole park into a haunted house. There was fog everywhere, you were not safe anywhere, the times I really jumped out of my skin we were just wandering around the park, or waiting in line for rides, and monsters would come out of the fog.
    While Rush Of Blood is still my personal favorite, RE7 is easily still the best game for VR so far. Best graphics, best mechanics, brilliant design great story, and scary as all hell. It's almost in a league of it's own at this point.

  • @DylanGladstoneMusic
    @DylanGladstoneMusic 7 років тому +1

    The scariest parts of RE7 for me weren't the battles. Once the combat starts my brain goes into logical mode and the combat is just a task to get through to survive . RE7 terrified me with suspense, the sneaking around trying to avoid combat, being chased down, and nervously exploring new areas.
    I had a love hate relationship with this game. Every night I loaded it up I was filled with dread at the loading screen and thinking "Why am I doing this again, I really don't want to be here." But the environment was so compelling and realistic, and the psychological impact so intense...I couldn't stay away. RE7 is by far the most powerful game experience I've ever had, and the prolonged fear goes beyond anything I've experienced in real life. I 've totalled a pickup truck in a swamp, launched myself over a car in a head on collision on a motorcycle, and shattered my leg after losing control in a turn on a motorcycle. Like the combat in RE7 when you're crashing your mind is racing in full logic mode trying to figure out how to not die. No suspense, and it's over quickly. RE7 slowly tortured me for many hours. Like Bryan, I finished the game with a lot of hours on the clock because I nervously crept through most of the game.
    My only real complaint with RE7 is with the pre-rendered cut scenes. Luckily there aren't that many but when they do show up they ruin that part of the game. To go from being IN the game to watching a flat movie floating in a void completely breaks the VR spell.
    Tonight I plan to start my second playthrough. I haven't touched it since I finished it, I've been saving it for Halloween.
    My second favorite horror game is Paranormal Activity. I really didn't enjoy it until I read that you're supposed to play standing up. The controls work better standing, (but I still have trouble getting through doors), however the really cool part is that it seems far scarier standing up.
    Happy Halloween everyone!

    • @DezrahBlinn
      @DezrahBlinn 7 років тому +1

      I totally agree, the combat was my least favorite part of the game. The suspense and creepiness were great, but when the combat started...it was just "sigh, I guess now I'm in a first person shooter with low ammo".

    I love the way stuff in the foreground will move differently than stuff in the background when you move your head, creating more of an actual sense of depth. I don't think any other game has done that. I played RE7 once, but your enthusiasm made me finally revisit it, and my 2nd play through is more fun than my first. It's probably the only game I've played in a while where I tell myself just five more minutes and it turns into a couple of hours

    In a parallel universe Konami didn't cut off their nose to spite their face, they're treating Hideo Kojima with respect and Silent Hills is about to be released on PSVR. In our world there's not a chance in hell even a slightly similar story would play out. Then Capcom came riding in like Gandalf at dawn, from the east, saving the day with Resident Evil 7.
    I loved this video. You guys could have talked for longer about it and I'd have still been glued to the screen.

    RE7 is so painfully close to being a truly great game. I think if the team had been given the time to finish it, it would have been an instant classic, but you can tell they were forced to rush the last quarter of the game, even going as far as cramming what was clearly supposed to be DLC into the end, just to pad it out. such a shame. Everything up to the back house boss fight is amazing, and one of the best experiences I've ever had, playing a horror game. I really hope they don't shy away from developing more games like this. Looking forward to more.

    i literally can't even play resi 7 when im home alone. i definitely am affected by scary games, i totally agree with Bryan on that. i think humans can access the emotion of fear very readily, this has an evolutionary advantage because to be scared is to be aware, and to be mindful of dangers. anyway, yea, even tho its obviously not real, i am completely convinced by the sense of presence and suspense in that game. so amazing. imagine what its gonna be like in future generations of VR, with better resolutions, graphics, tracking generally better immersion etc.. there's gonna be a lot of soiled gamer pants out there.
    ah, i had not heard about the 2 years spent on making an engine.. yea i have said in videos that it was amazing capcom made it into VR in two months.. doh! ah well, at least one company now has an engine that will make them able to convert their future games to VR.. maybe they could even license that engine.. maybe not.. but either way, i am so grateful they did that. resi 7 is one of the most amazing experiences ive ever had with gaming.
    i do get Dezra's point about when the zombies etc come into it, and you're always ready, but i still remained on edge just cos the environment was so tangible and the family characters were still so creepy and imposing. every time i saw jack coming around i'd be scared. you do sort of have to meet the game half way tho, which is common with all entertainment experiences tho.. like, you're gonna get the best out of it if you consciously surrender yourself to the concept of being scared, being convinced, really letting yourself feel like you're there in that house.. well, it worked for me anyway XD

      See, that's where Bryan and I disagree, the little "gamey" type things distract from the environment. It's one thing to have to choose what to take, and what to leave, that's great. But a magical series of trunks that hold all of your items, no matter where they are in the world? I know, it's a RE trope, but it does detract from the experience.

      Bryan, I think space management was extremely clever in this game. While it has been done in games before, in this game you are stressing always about what to take with you and what to keave behind. I was always trying to leave one or two slots open as I knew thhat new stuff was go I ng to come my way. New weapons and having to have space for two items always to craft ammo etc. Drove me constantly crazy but in such a good way.

    Great review guys. I've been a horror fan since I was a kid, the first movie I've ever seen was a scary one and since then I've been hooked with the feeling of unease and knowing its okay because its just entertainment. RE7 pushed it to a new level. Not much scares me but I couldn't keep going a few hours in without someone sitting next to me and I still haven't finished it. Unfortunately, Re7 may be the only AAA title that effectively was transformed from a normal mode onto a VR mode. In my personal opinion, games that were made for the platform and then adjusted for the VR make a far better impression that games made from scratch onto a VR system. Normal VR games try to create an illusion that you are in a virtual reality world, while normal games simply allow you to use the headset as a camera without boundaries, and rather than focus on making that illusion, they focus on a gameplay. Just take for the fact the point that all that it took for Re7 to work so well on VR was the idea of giving you the controll of the camera. Normal VR games do their best to create as large and as open area as possible, yet Re7 took a completely different approach. Just imagine how well would Alien Isolation work on a VR.

      The problem is, most nights I just want to lay back and chill with some VR. In RE7, there is no “lay back” and there definitely is no “chill”. That shit is intense, at all time.

      That's honestly why I've never bought anything from eBay, even though I have been tempted a few times.
      I genuinely feel for you because I would be so pissed off!
      At least it wasn't a console or something, just a game! But still.

    Scariest game EVER! Shows you the level of immersion a VR headset can achieve. People need to find a pill to make them fearless to play this game.

    OK I started watching this when it came out then paused it when it got to spoilers. It showed up in my related Vids, finished watching it now having complete the game.
    I guess you're right about the last quarter being lesser than the rest of it but I definitely agree that it was still fun enough. I was just happy to keep playing in that world. Still need to play the dlc, can't wait. God I so hope capcom is gonna use their VR port system to bring more stuff over.

    I never really get scared of movies or video games (exept for pt) and the demo for res7 did not scare me at all... But... Then they updated it for VR and i cant make it more then 5 minuts and im out. I know the game is one of the Best psvr games but im just too scared to play it.
    Im considering buying it just to support the VR industry but i dont think i will ever be able to play it

    Can't wait for the DLC. I haven't stepped into this game for quite some time. Really ready to go back.

    • @tzuyd
      @tzuyd 7 років тому

      I'm with Dez. I don't really get scared by things. A bit more than he does, though after three levels of Rush of Blood the scares turned more into just screaming back at the game for a couple of seconds longer than necessary. Once I started doing that I kinda stopped getting scared per se (other than the initial jump).
      But holy heck this game oozes atmosphere. The house is a horrendous work of art to behold. The mood is always intense. And it's all done while rendering two view points at 60 fps - incredible engine work done, but I think most of the 'crisp'ness comes from Capcom lathering on multiple post processing effects, muddying the picture. It suits the mood in this game, but I wonder if they can repeat this perceived image quality in a future title.
      Technically brilliant, and a solid, fun romp overall. RoB will hold a special place in my heart for the foreseeable future, but man this game was such a blast.

      PSVR Without Parole, That's correct. You should try! It is so much better. The guy on the left played it with all the VR safe guards on? No wonder he didn't think it was that scary,....That's no way to play any VR game

    • @WithoutParole
      @WithoutParole  7 років тому +2

      Hey Scott! Let me get you caught up...
      The guy on the left is Dezrah. I'm Bryan. Dezrah gets motion sick pretty easily. I don't.
      Nothing scares Dezrah. Everything scares me. We're like an 80s sitcom. :D
      This show for the last 20 episodes or so has been a journey through the PSVR backcatalog with a semi-focus on Dez slowly overcoming his motion sickness and me picking games that'll scare him. We haven't been terribly successful at either honestly, but maybe we'll get there someday.
      But yeah, ultimately I agree with you. The VR blinders kill the immersion and, by default, any chance we had of scaring Dez. But stick with us dude - every episode is another episode closer to our goals. :D

    • @scottkoppinger2595
      @scottkoppinger2595 7 років тому +1

      Haha, Thanks (also, sorry I'm just HORRIBLE with names)...I've been watching some of your stuff here and there, it's good shit, keep it up. I'm the best of both worlds, I don't really get scared of anything, maybe a little creeped out or unnerved occasionally, and I've never gotten sick from PSVR, full on locomotion straight from the get go is the only way I'll play, and I got mine at Midnight on Launch day. Can't stand the click turning or any teleporting, I refuse to play any games like that (which unfortunately is what Doom VRF looks like it's going to be)...And it looks like the fixed the Move controller locomotion issue with Skyrim VR, which is a day one purchase for me now that I can use the Move controllers and freely move around. I really hope Capcom licenses the RE Engine to other devs, if almost every game had a VR option to play, PS VR would sky rocket in popularity. Anyways, keep up the great content!

    I just played the game for the first time... and in VR. Although most of the time I knew what to expect, I still got spooked... a lot :). The environment alone was good enough to get me"uncomfortable" (like intended), just like you, listening to everything and checking everything.
    And what a beauty in VR!!! (I've got a Pro). I'm also one to get motion sick in VR. But with this game, I spend 2 hours straight without feeling the slightest nauseated (except when jumping down quick, that always gets me). If I wasn't interupted by my dad, I would have been going on. Don't know why people talk about fuzzyness... I find it to be very sharp.
    Mia is kinda small though :)... like 1m50? I was checking if there was an option to set your height. Barry on the other hand, he's bigger than me.
    I like it!! Just borrowed it from a friend, while I wait for the Gold Edtion. Capcom did good... actually, no... they did great!
