  • Roger has some problems with his Haier fridge. The freezer is frosting up and the fridge is freezing over. He has a solution and it's not cheap sadly.
    Refrigerator repair is very hit and miss and the engineers are far too quick to replace random parts, so Roger has some very good fridge troubleshooting advice, which is to buy a decent twin cooling fridge in the first place!

      coz like 90% of them, he isn't an engineer; he's merely a fitter. He knows next to nothing about the technology and design considerations so is unable to do fault finding/tracing as a real engineer would be able to do.
      The title 'engineer' is waaaaaay overused; seems to apply to anyone weilding a screwdriver during their day job.

    I had this exact problem with a Hisense caused by the drain on the auto de-ice on the heat exchanger (freezer) being blocked! The heat exchanger was seriously frozen up because moisture couldn't escape causing the components to ice up in turn.

    • @mikes4163
      @mikes4163 4 роки тому +2

      We had similar with an auto-deice freezer icing up after about 6 months (well known make, but can't recall it for sure now). Warranty engineer said we needed to deice it occasionally ... ?!?
      I took the relevant section apart and found the drain hole was partially obstructed by some of the foam insulation - poor assembly. I trimmed it back so the hole was full-bore. It then ran for many years after with no problems, and I was happy to send it on to a charity shop when we revamped our kitchen with a built in freezer.

    X Roger, this older video appeared in my feed because I watched ‘my mate Vince’ on YT wrestling for over an hour trying to fix his fridge/freezer - the power of the algorithm. Vince was ultimately successful but had an interesting and painful journey that is way out of scope for most homeowners. After watching both videos (and being a ‘real engineer’ myself) I draw the following conclusions:
    (1) There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the design of your old fridge/freezer.
    (2) These appliances are very simple bits of kit but they have electrical, electronic and mechanical parts and they can and do go ‘wrong’.
    (3) The ‘professional’ who came round to sort out your fridge freezer did not know what he was doing and did not have any diagnostic skills and was unable to work from first principles, but as you say throwing parts in out of desperation (and to get on to the next job asap).
    (4) If you watch Vince - he starts off from a zero knowledge base and just perseveres until he gets to the bottom of it - he stumbles around, gets as confused as fuck sometimes - but gets there in the end. It is painful to watch.
    (5) The biggest challenge for the homeowner is obviously understanding the principles and actually where the key components are located BUT much more important how to access them and remove the various covers without breaking any of the quite fragile plastic mouldings - beyond that knowing how to work safely and measuring continuity and resistance on a multi meter.
    ( 6). All design is a compromise, design choices may improve reliability or reduce it and while your refrigeration engineer recommended the twin evaporator design choice - from a reliability perspective it may not actually be more robust than the fan transfer design (reliability studies are a science in their own right).
    (7). I think you got unlucky, a Friday afternoon production model colliding with a service tech who did not have a clue.

    @BM-jy6cb 4 роки тому +1

    That's interesting. I didn't know there were fridges that shared the evaporator. Having said that, we've had an American style Samsung for about 8 years and it's a nightmare - the defrosting system doesn't work properly so the evaporator and fan constantly get clogged with ice.
    On top of that, the insulation in the cover over the evaporator is unsealed expanded polystyrene, which gets saturated with water, losing its insulating properties in the process making the problem even worse (or, more likely being the cause of the problem in the first place).
    Utter junk. Next time, I'll go for a Bosch or Liebherr - saving a few hundred quid on something you plan to last years just isn't worth the hassle.
    Oh, and another warning to folks thinking about buying one of these new style fridges that don't have the conventional flat heat exchanger on the back, but instead use a coiled-up hear exchanger with a fan is they are a nightmare to clean, as you can't get to most of it and so you need a compressor to blow the dust off, which is needed every six months as they are mounted at floor level with the fan constantly blowing all the muck over it.

      It may not do you any harm but there are no positives benefits. It is essentially distilled water that has been frozen. It contains nothing to fight microbes and it is a mistake to think that microbes can't live in ice. That said there are plenty of more risky things out there.

    Three or so decades ago I had a refrigerator/freezer made in the former YUGOSLAVIA --
    The brand being GORENJE ( pronounced GOREN YEAH - for those that have zero knowledge of foreign languages)
    This refrigerator had two separate systems - and -- 2 compressors -
    The idea of separate systems - for the Freezer and refrigerator is not new.
    It is something that Western Manufacturers did do to maximize profits
    by reducing manufacturing costs - and just keeping the engineering to 'satisfactory' rather than superb.

    • @billystead4598

      @@SkillBuilder They normally live in houses lol. but seriously for a moment, a twin cooler unit has the same amount of working parts as two separate units. But has the disadvantage of being tied together, so one side dies and you end up replacing the whole unit, where if you have separates you can get matching units and if one dies you just replace one. you can even get double high fridges and freezers. Of course it spoils the ' american fridge' look a bit.

    If it fails out of the wrapper, get a replacement. Letting an engineer come within a week of purchase - especially more than once - is being very generous to the shop. After that, a refund is in order.
    By the way, a bowl of salt in the bottom of the fridge can completely clear odour.
