Sometimes when we perform calculations in Tableau we get errors such as "Expected Type Float, Found String". These errors are related to data type. Personally, I wish they would instead write "Please Change the STRING DATA TYPE to a NUMBER DATA TYPE for Calculations".
To follow along, you can download the data set at the following link:

These errors can be particularly frustrating for beginners because the error descriptions are usually very cryptic. The other sad part about this is that most other softwares have the same issues. Its usually really smart designs trying to speak human haha!
In this video, I'm going to recreate the issues and go through in detail data types and how these errors come into play. Then I'll show you ways around this step by step.

Very helpful video , thank you. please how do i handle bitcoin data with NAN (Not a Number) in Tableau? it's appearing as string and the data is too large for excel. all the columes (open, close, and adjusted close) are appearing as string. And changing it from string to decimal, changes everything to null. Can you help?

Hey peace! On the left side of Tableau you'll see all your fields. Next to each field is a little blue or green symbol. Check that WEIGHT and DENOMINATOR both have the symbol #.
That signifies its a numerical measure. To change it, right click the field and select change data type to NUMBER or DECIMAL version

    The requirement is
    • If a user selects business, then the regular view would be displayed
    • If user selects business area before selecting business, then an error message should come up saying please select business->Business area
    • If a user selects business line directly an error message should pop up saying select business->business area->business Line
    how to do this?
