I think this is the first speedpaint I've watched that fully helped me understand how the underpainting affects the finished piece. Thanks so much and keep up the lovely work!!!
Yep, one brush, cleaned with dirty walnut oil between colors. Mud is okay. I try to control what I want to blend by loading or starving my brush. A loaded brush blends less because of the mass of paint being applied. A starved or naked brush does lots of blending. No magic, just years and years of practice. :)
Most people use solvents like turpentine to rinse brushes in, but I'm sensitive to fumes. Linseed oil might be an option. It may eventually gum up, though.
Since discovering your channel only recently, I've developed something of a ritual around it. First, I watch the video. Then, I watch it a second time at quarter or half speed [obviously, with the sound off!] to get a better understanding of how the paint is being applied. Finally, I go back and do a few dozen screen-grabs that capture the process unfolding, step by step. This sort of analysis really helps develop an understanding of how another artist approaches their work, which is incredibly instructive. I'm so impressed with the way you tackle various portions of the image - seemingly almost at random - all at once, rather than in the much more linear manner I've been used to - that is to say, working on one item at a time - rough in the shape, draw the eyes, draw the nose, now the mouth, ears, hair, etc. You treat the the completed form as a whole to be developed simultaneously. I find that very liberating, and wanted to thank you for your beautiful work, as well as providing that insight.
I really appreciate your resolve to educate yourself. So many new artists I come across need to be spoon-fed, and as much as I'd like to help everyone, I literally don't have time for it. I find that moving around the piece and doing as much as I can simultaneously creates better value and color harmony. It's all about relations. One thing influences another, and the more I move around the stronger the relations are.
John, thank you for your response. I really like what you say about on-the-fly, global evaluation and adjustment as you work. I am by nature and experience a pen and ink line artist. Color is something that I have simply have no natural instinct for. When I see your work, and watch you apply what is, for me, such a non-intuitive range of hues, it forces me to stop and think - there is no "wrong" or "right" color, there is only what you make of any given palette. That was the epiphany I mentioned earlier, the moment of liberation. If there is no "wrong", you can't fail; if you can't fail, there's nothing to fear. Well, I'm sure that, given enough time, plenty of "fearless experiments" will be looked back upon as failures! But that's fine, as the most important part is to just get moving down the path in the first place. I suspect the colors you apply are not so random in their selection, as you have travelled this path many times and have certain goals in mind from the moment you start, even if it evolves along the way. Anyway, thank you again for the insights and for inspiring a healthy dose of artistic courage within your audience!
Gobsmackingly, heart wrenchingly beautiful. Just watched a handful of vids of your portraits. Often with my jaw dropping, wanting to cry, but mostly in awe. That you share the whole process!!! Mate. You are a legend. Thank you. Gush over. And out.
What an absolute gem of a painting. The process is as masterful as the artwork itself. Both controlled and expressive. I'd be happy to be half as talented as you. Thank you. Look forward to many more.👍
Recently started learning oil painting. Slowing down your videos and doing my best to rationalize your actions has been a tremendous help with my portrait practice. Thank you!
I think I saw this video more than ten times already - it seems to break any rules that I was aware of in portrait painting, but it's so amazing watching you work and the result is superb!! Thank you xxx
You definitely got a style that identifies you as an artist, on one hand your palette seems simple, however you get the best out of it; on the other, you demonstrate mastery by using one brush size without limiting your assorted brushstroke gauge, since you can go amazingly from thin to thick at ease. Congratulations!
I see this video appear again and again, I still watch it. Its one of your best works in my opinion. I love the colors, tilt of the head, facial expression and background.
I love the colors and your loose and rough style is very aesthetic. As a person that gets easily bored with cleaning up one painting or drawing I really appreciate how you are able to put together a painting that naturally and lively. To me, this kind of first generation/one session paintings tend to have so much character.
I just want to say this- you work is phenominal and I don't know how many times I've seen this time lapse! be blessed and keep on doing lovely work- much admiration and love :)
Thats a great looking face. A lot of emotional or powerful significance in the expression. Some portraits to me have this kind of power to them, and this is one of them.
I just got into painting after years of charcoal and pencil (3 years) and now I'm practicing painting , so while I was searching and just randomly watching I found your channel And I was stunned , beautiful work !! Keep it up!!
I watched this video like: these are going to be the most educational 4 minutes in my life (edit: I suck at acrylics, that’s why your Videos were actually helpful for me XD)
Every time I watch your video, I feel thrilled. I think you have a perfect sense of shape. Whether it is through practice or congenital. Do I need anything other than practicing a lot to get that sense of shape? If you have any, please let me know.
I'm so glad that I discovered your art. Just pledged to your patron and I in all honestly think you will go so far in the art industry if you already aren't.
I'll take that as a compliment, but there are literally 500+ paintings I've done before this one, many not very good. That's not to say I haven't been lucky. It would totally be awesome to be blessed with magical art skill, though.
If you look at the beginning, you'll see the artist laying out tones/hues. Try painting something just in whites/grays, then use what ever colors you want over each of the hues. Stick to the hues and forget about color for awhile
angel crisol Break it down:- LINES, SHAPES, VALUES and then COLOUR. Consider TEXTURES as well. A 'style' consists of varying the emphasis of each of these.
Hello, friend! This video was recommended in my feed today and I'm always happy to watch it when it comes up. It's a favorite of mine. YOU are a favorite of mine. You are, as I've told in another comment, one of the artists I watch in order to learn. I love your work! Especially, how creamy your brushwork. I hope these days find you healthy and happy and your home filled with laughter and loved ones. Glad the UA-cam robot put this video in front of me again! Bless you, friend! See you!
oh my god I've been planning on doing an artist study about you in school and I only just found your channel! So interesting and inspiring to see how everything comes together, I adore your work!
I'm trying to draw a simple head with a circle to not get lost and you just started the painting with lines that don't even look like shapes that ended beautifully
Something that helped me with over-blending was taking more time mixing paints on my palette. If I have the right colors to begin with, I don't have to overwork the painting trying to get it right.
love your 'style'!!! reminds me of malcolm liepke's work or even some of lucien freud's portraits. I love to paint oil portraits too but my works always end up being very blended and smooth looking, so i really like seeing work that's loose with visible brush strokes. It really is a great skill! I'll get there some day. I just gotta have the balls to use bigger brushes i think haha. Anyway, fab stuff! keep it up
Yeah, big brushes help. Squinting at your reference also helps to simplify a picture's value scheme so you don't end up over smoothing or fussing over details that may not be important.
I think this is the first speedpaint I've watched that fully helped me understand how the underpainting affects the finished piece. Thanks so much and keep up the lovely work!!!
I just love the expression given. The pinkish color beneath the eyes give so much life to her.
Are you using just one brush?? How are you keeping the colors from becoming muddy? Are you a magical creature of immense talent?
Yep, one brush, cleaned with dirty walnut oil between colors. Mud is okay. I try to control what I want to blend by loading or starving my brush. A loaded brush blends less because of the mass of paint being applied. A starved or naked brush does lots of blending. No magic, just years and years of practice. :)
Thank you for replying! You are inspiring ☆
Do you have an alternative to walnut oil? I have a nut allergy, can't really touch it or anything.
Most people use solvents like turpentine to rinse brushes in, but I'm sensitive to fumes. Linseed oil might be an option. It may eventually gum up, though.
Awesome, thanks so much.
I like how you style is realistic, but not extremely. This way you have way more personality.
Kinda reminds me of Jojo’s art style
exactly. I prefer this art style over hyper realistic ones.
Crazy to watch the hair make it all pop in for me. Thanks for sharing your process
Hey. This is an impressive painting and I'm incredibly fond of it, her expression is just stunning to me. Thank you for sharing this. Congratulations.
Dude I really like your style of painting! You should make a comparison video between your earliest stuff and your newest ones to show your progress.
thelastoilmat he's not a dude.
News to me.
@@E-Kat He's not? I'm pretty sure he is!

Excellent use of light shadow and texture... and with only the big flat brush! Very helpful! Thanks for posting!

This is exactly the way I want to paint..... Realistic, but with enough visible brush strokes to show style and personality......
I think I saw this video more than ten times already - it seems to break any rules that I was aware of in portrait painting, but it's so amazing watching you work and the result is superb!! Thank you xxx

watching you render tiny things with that big brush makes me crazy, the hand control.... amazing piece!
Oxi Dization Big brushes go a long way bro!
I see this video appear again and again, I still watch it. Its one of your best works in my opinion. I love the colors, tilt of the head, facial expression and background.
Just knowing that this image exists is what gets me out of bed in the morning.
This is so satisfying to watch. I wish I'm this skilled..... Made me want to paint again
I love the colors and your loose and rough style is very aesthetic. Painted using just one brush! So much confidence and the outcome is superb!
i am so happy i got this in my recommendations. it looks so good, its real painting, modern art style as it should be in my opinion
I’m so happy to watch your painting.
I became glued sophisticated the way to draw.
Thank you for making video.
God I love it so much.
Usted es un gran artista. Bellas sus pinturas. Muchas gracias por compartir su creación. Felicidades
so soothing to see it come into being... thanks... a meditation for sure.. Grrreat!
Very intriguing painting. Really sets the mood for another painting session, thanks!
This is an amazingly enormous painting on such a small canvas! Thanks for posting.
wtf. This is absolutely insane. One moment it's a bunch of colors and the next it's a fairly realistic painting what??? Incredible
I also like this style. It becomes studying.
Oh my! I love love love it! So much character and the combination of colours is incredible.
truly amazing to show that not all portraits have to be in immense detail
I just want to say this- you work is phenominal and I don't know how many times I've seen this time lapse! be blessed and keep on doing lovely work- much admiration and love :)
That speed makes the work soooo easy... It's simply great work.
I love super loose stroke paintings like this a lot more than the fine-detailed stuff. So much more character in my opinion.
THIS PAINTING ART IS AMAZING! Was never a whiz like you at painting like this.
Thats a great looking face. A lot of emotional or powerful significance in the expression. Some portraits to me have this kind of power to them, and this is one of them.
wow so much punch and expression with such rough coloring and low amount of brush strokes. impressive!
i love it when the brush strokes obvious in the painting,
great work!!!
I just got into painting after years of charcoal and pencil (3 years) and now I'm practicing painting , so while I was searching and just randomly watching I found your channel And I was stunned , beautiful work !! Keep it up!!
The flat brush legend.
such confident strokes... must be nice
Someone with their own voice. Always lovely to see.
I watched this video like: these are going to be the most educational 4 minutes in my life (edit: I suck at acrylics, that’s why your Videos were actually helpful for me XD)
That is simply great
I've been saving your portraits for months on Pinterest I didn't know you had a UA-cam channel this is great !
Stop making it look so easy ! Great work
I almost want to call it expressionism, it’s so active and stylistic. Beautiful- subscribed for sure
Every time I watch your video, I feel thrilled. I think you have a perfect sense of shape. Whether it is through practice or congenital. Do I need anything other than practicing a lot to get that sense of shape? If you have any, please let me know.
WOW! You are my first portrait artist who paints the way I hope to. Thank you! I will be watching for a very long time!
my feelings exactly!!!!
I'm so glad that I discovered your art. Just pledged to your patron and I in all honestly think you will go so far in the art industry if you already aren't.
Thank you! I appreciate your support.
Amazing work. I love it
I'm so jealous, wtf? Why wasn't I blessed with magical art skill?
I'll take that as a compliment, but there are literally 500+ paintings I've done before this one, many not very good. That's not to say I haven't been lucky. It would totally be awesome to be blessed with magical art skill, though.
Amazing! The way you use colors never ceases to amaze me.
Thank you, Alan!
Hello. This is absolutely amazing and deserves 100x the amount of views. You are an incredibly skilled artist and you should be proud!
This is absolutely amazing ! I love how the colors separately are distinct colors but together they work so well , I suck at colors lol.
If you look at the beginning, you'll see the artist laying out tones/hues. Try painting something just in whites/grays, then use what ever colors you want over each of the hues. Stick to the hues and forget about color for awhile

You're the first legit artist I've found on YT
Beautiful... love it... keep posting

Lucky me! Sorry I've been absent in the past couple of months. I should be back with new videos soon. Stay well.
Awesome! I love drawing portraits but I've been struggling with understanding color schemes for skin and hair. Helps a ton!
Super expresiv !
i've never loved an art piece as much as i love this one
oh my god I've been planning on doing an artist study about you in school and I only just found your channel! So interesting and inspiring to see how everything comes together, I adore your work!
This is such a beautiful art style. I'm madly in love with it. Want to start using paint as my medium just from watching this video
Holy crap that expression is perfect
I'm trying to draw a simple head with a circle to not get lost and you just started the painting with lines that don't even look like shapes that ended beautifully
I love the way you do noses.
Bravo🎨j aime toujours autant 🎶🎵
Good job
Love your limited palette, the use of large brushes & your confident strokes. Any reason you go for such small canvasses?
I can almost see her being a stubborn girl who don't give a shit to anyone's saying!
Good job!
John, you rock. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Drew!
That is amazing how the heck do you keep the black underpaint from making muddy?!?!
incradible... 👏 I love the colors
I love her look. Awesome job.
great painting !! reminds me of Milt Kobayashi & Malcolm Liepke
Thank you for showing your palette! Very useful!
Please post more often!! You are amazing! ❤️I love your work
Thank you! I'm trying to do this more regularly.
A F-L
you make it look so easy I wanna cry
High quality content! This is the sort of thing I want to subscribe to!
Reminds me of Malcolm Liepke's art. I love it.
absolutely incredible.
this looks like something malcolm t liepke would paint!! so stunning
I have the problem of overblending my work and you just paint solid strokes on so carefree and it looks so effortless!!
Something that helped me with over-blending was taking more time mixing paints on my palette. If I have the right colors to begin with, I don't have to overwork the painting trying to get it right.
Wow. This is incredible.
I mostly came to see the process, nice work.
love your 'style'!!! reminds me of malcolm liepke's work or even some of lucien freud's portraits. I love to paint oil portraits too but my works always end up being very blended and smooth looking, so i really like seeing work that's loose with visible brush strokes. It really is a great skill! Yeah, big brushes help. Squinting at your reference also helps to simplify a picture's value scheme so you don't end up over smoothing or fussing over details that may not be important.
breathtaking
this man is a genius
Amazing use of colors I've never seen used before in portraits, and love your choice of synthesized music.
that went from being nothing to being something absolutely beautiful so fast
Great work, I love the texture!
This is truly art. Amazing
i love your artwork
Beautiful. Love your work.
Thank you!
amazing work, i'm in love for your style.
Thanks Andreij!
Your colour theory is incredible!
Nice control over the paint !
