Tom Cruise was so good in this movie, truly one of his best. People tend to forget that there is an excellent actor behind his blockbuster action Hollywood star persona.

A lot of people must have thought after watching this big "chewing up the scenery" performance that Tom Cruise is just a little crazy, but he's actually a great actor and makes great choices for his characters. He decided Jerry would be this combination of a slick and sharky agent and also this eccentric, unsure, well intentioned guy, and he shifts from the former to the latter over the course of the movie. For the biggest movie star he's surprisingly different in each movie.

    "SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!"
Fun Fact: The story for this movie was reportedly based on real-life Orange County agent Leigh Steinberg (who makes a cameo in this movie as Troy Aikman's agent, which he was in real life). Steinberg's ex-partner David Dunn tried to lure away many of Steinberg's clients, just as Jay Mohr's Bob Sugar does in this movie.
Another Fun Fact: Jonathan Lipnicki showed up on the set one day telling everyone that "the human head weighs eight pounds". Writer, produce and director Cameron Crowe liked it so much he wrote it into the script.
Also, Regina King was really pregnant during the filming of this movie.

The film contrasts Rod, a guy with an awesome functional personal life but his career is in trouble and Jerry who was on top of the world but his personal life was awful. Rod provided a blueprint for what Jerry's life could be and Jerry helped show Rod what his professional life could be

    • @chunkyMunky329
      @chunkyMunky329 10 місяців тому

"Awful" is too strong a word to apply to Jerry especially to his entire personal life. He has a lot of great friendships, and they are part of his personal life. Also, his relationship with his fiance was actually a positive force in his life until he lost the star NFL client. Jerry definitely showed something to Rod, but Rod only advised Jerry to let the girl go if he did not love her. He never gave Jerry a blueprint for how to win her back. Jerry changed because Dorothy showed him what it was like without her and it robbed him from enjoying his new success. She completed him, not Rod.

@@condorgaming4000 That's not how psychology works. If Jerry's wife was at his house, waiting for him, he would not have had that realization. He would have just continued in his old ways. Its the combination of losing her, and then seeing a reflection of what he has lost that brought him back to her. And so, if he had not seen this with Rod, something else would have brought him to the same realization. His woman started a chain reaction that had inevitability.

WHAT?! I am so excited! Didn’t think you guys would end up reacting to this one!
This is one of my favorite movies ever, and in my top 5 comfort movies. Love the way the movie explores the concepts of change: the first step is having the honesty to acknowledge the problem, and while that’s a huge step to take… things don’t get easier from there. Real change is not easy - it requires us to take ownership of our actions, forces us to re-evaluate our relationships, and pushes us outside of our comfort zone. This is a concept I’ve struggled to embrace in my own life, and I love how this movie shows just how massive the journey of real change is.
Jerry has his up-all-night epiphany, sends out his mission statement, and for the rest of the movie has to figure out how to truly implement those changes in real life - and most importantly, how to be ok with the inevitable pitfalls/uncomfortable situations that come along with change, and the struggles that come along with meaningful relationships.
I think Jerry realized that he wanted real human connection, something he didn’t have anywhere in his life - not in his job and not with his fiancé. His relationships are all very surface-level, just like he’s approached his job: with the salesy mindset. You actually commented on that in your reaction, the fact that his job requires you to always be selling something. It makes sense that if you’re steeped in that lifestyle, you may struggle with having honest relationships. And if your relationships aren’t intimate enough for openness and honesty, there’s not going to be much depth and growth.
When he releases his mission statement, everyone congratulates him and acts supportive, but it’s empty support. They end up firing and abandoning him with no sense of loyalty. His fiancé is all about closing the sale and how there’s “no loyalty.” Nobody around him actually believes in or supports his mission statement. They’re all steeped in the mindset and lifestyle that he wants to escape.
Dorothy is the first person to actually want to have a discussion about it with Jerry. She wants to have real, genuine conversation about the ideals and passions that he wrote about. You can tell that when she starts talking about it with him, he’s caught off guard by someone wanting to have an actual in-depth conversation about his ideas. Later in the movie, he tells Ray “I’ve wanted to talk for so long, but nobody wants to listen.” Dorothy was the first person to seek true connection with Jerry, the first person to genuinely believe in and support his mission statement in the way he’d hoped his colleagues and fiancé would’ve.
I think he was drawn to her from the very first time they talked and I think he sensed that she was the perfect match for the man that he wanted to be, the man that wrote the mission statement. But his doubts and anxieties - mainly, about his ability to change - get in his way for most of the movie. He’s afraid that he can’t truly change, and that fear creates a chasm between him and Dorothy. His bachelor party is really where that fear settled in - great at friendship, bad at intimacy. He likely feared that he couldn’t be successful at intimacy. He likely feared that he couldn’t say “I love you” and really mean it. In the bachelor party video, they outright state that his “I love you” is a lie.
I think a lot of this movie is the inner Jerry battling with the outer Jerry. I think Jerry felt drawn to Dorothy the first time they talked, and the inner him - the man that wanted intimacy, honesty, and growth - loved her and knew that a relationship with her felt “right” in a way that his relationship with Avery never did.
BUT, the outer Jerry feared that he couldn’t change and that he couldn’t truly become the man he described in the mission statement, the man who could say “I love you” and mean it. The man that he knew Dorothy deserved.
That’s why you see so much back-and-forth and slightly confusing decisions from Jerry. He loves her and wants to be with her, so he pursues her, and yet until he gets over his own anxieties things can’t quite fall into place.
Throughout the movie, we see that he can and is changing. He’s ending the relationship with Avery that isn’t the loving, intimate relationship that he truly wants. Most importantly, he genuinely connects with and lives out his mission statement with Rod.
That connection with Rod is a process, of course - Jerry kind of retreats into old habits for a while when it comes to his job. When he’s fired, he falls back into his safe-zone: focusing on keeping as many clients as he can, listening to Avery as she tells him that there’s no loyalty and he’s the “lord of the living room” who can sell and convince anyone of anything… She really pushes him back into his old mindset. He’s struggling to live out the “more personal attention” ideal and feels (justifiably so, look at what happens with Kush…) that changing into a better person is going to lead to utter professional failure. And it does! He loses Kush, and Rod is a difficult client who doesn’t see success until the end of the movie.
But as he and Rod build rapport and a genuine relationship, they push one another to change and grow, and end of forming a true connection. By the end Rod has become a better man, and so has Jerry, and they’ve reached success because of the changes they’ve gone through. Jerry finally sees some success directly resulting from living out his mission statement. Jerry succeeds outside of his safe-zone, outside of the “no loyalty” mindset that he probably felt like he needed and couldn’t escape.
Jerry doesn’t realize all of this until the end, because of his lack of belief in his own ability to change. He doesn’t see that he’s changed through his relationship with Rod, that he and Rod pushed one another with honesty and real conversation and both became better for it - until the final game when Rod gets hurt. That’s when the depth of the relationship between them is fully realized and on display. When Jerry realizes just how connected he and Rod/Rod’s family have become, that they’ve both successfully changed, established a genuine connection, and now have a huge win professionally, he finally realizes that he can indeed change successfully - and already has!
He’s learned how to be intimate and open with people, to engage with people who push him to be better and want him to do the same for them. He didn’t really know how to handle those types of relationships previously, for example when Rod tells Jerry “you think we’re fighting and I think we’re finally talking.” Jerry didn’t know how to be in relationships with depth, honesty, confrontation, and growth. It was an uncomfortable thing for him, because of his life and relationships being so surface-level and phony.
But by the time Rod gets injured, he’s learned how to be true to himself, how to express himself, and how to fully engage in a meaningful relationship. That’s why his love confession to Dorothy is just so good - it’s a man who deeply wanted to change, struggled to do so and doubted that he could succeed, and finally realized that he already had - he just needed to get out of his own way, allow himself to be open and honest, and stop doubting himself.
One of my favorite moments of the movie is right before Jerry shows up to confess his love - the ladies in the living room are talking about change, and how difficult it is because behavioral patterns are so firmly set. It perfectly captures the exact struggles that Jerry has experienced throughout the movie, and then we get to see him burst in, express his love, and fully embrace intimacy. He wanted it all along, but didn’t know how to live it out, feared that he couldn’t live it out, and is now taking the leap and putting all of his emotions on the table. It’s him coming full-circle, a successfully changed man. So powerful and encouraging!
I always feel empowered to change and be a better person when I watch this movie. It pushes me to seek out relationships that are intimate, with people who encourage growth. Realizing we want to change is one thing, but actually living out that change is a whole other thing. It is not easy to do, and so often we end up giving up and going back to our comfort zone because our anxieties or fear of failure scare us shitless.
I love, love, love this movie! As if that wasn’t clear enough. Dorothy is a total gem, I didn’t even touch on her and Ray at all but I could write an essay about this movie. Also, Laurel is a fantastic character. I love the moment when shes smoking and overhears Jerry and Dorothy laughing and having fun. You can tell she’s still a worried older sister, but sees that there may be more to their relationship than she realized and finds their laughter adorable.
I really feel like this movie shows us the intimacy between Jerry and Dorothy, and that moment of them laughing proves that they are genuinely connecting. Especially when you compare it to Jerry’s scenes with Avery… his relationship with Dorothy is sweeter, happier, they’re comfortable with one another. We the viewer can see that Jerry loves Dorothy from pretty early on, Jerry just has to catch up and learn how to express it :)
Ugh, I love this movie. Glad you guys watched it, I had so much fun seeing your reactions!
