  • Come with me while I make some historical, androgynous, gender neutral clothing! Cycling trousers and split skirts were common sportswear for women towards the end of the Victorian era, and into the Belle Époque.
    The best part is that both of these patterns are completely free!

    Hey Ms. Thompson, because of your 7th grade LA class I got into sewing, and I gotta say you have the COOLEST videos! Super inspiring to young intrepid seamstresses like me! :D

    That’s actually the simplest and easiest explanation of welt pockets I’ve ever seen. You said not to trust you, but they came out amazing, so I’m gonna trust you.

      Oh, wow, what a huge compliment! Thank you so much, I’m so glad the explanation made sense.

    Good job recognizing that if you didn't go back to change things it wouldn't be a wearable garment for you! It can be so frustrating when things don't go the way you want. Both turned out super nice and I'm glad you are happy with them now

    They turned out really great! Omg, with how everyone has been talking about the split skirts lately, I’d really love to make a pair!

    I love welt pockets! Think of the welt as a giant buttonhole and they lose a lot of their mystery! I had a divided skirt back in the 1970s/80s that I wore until it just didn’t fit anymore (changing form late teens to adulthood) I looked at the pattern a couple of years ago and just had to admit that I don’t have the tailoring skills to adjust the pattern sizing.

    Thank you so much for making this! It's so hard as someone who prefers tomboy clothing (not men's clothes, just more boyish women's clothes!) to find tutorials and stuff :)

    Super cute! I'm working on the same bloomers (the fuller ones but taking a lot of width out of the bottom of the leg so they won't be ~quite~ as full)

      Skirts and dresses are for girls and women.

    I like the second pair as a skirt, but I think they could also look very cute as bloomers. Perhaps try a running stitch gather and pinning them onto a strip of fabric to get a feel for how they would look on as bloomers.

  • @rtboothby3053
    @rtboothby3053 2 роки тому +1

    I liked both of these. I think you did the right thing shortening the fuller version and turning it into a skirt rather than bloomers. Both styles look good on you. Appreciated the information on making the welt pockets. BTW, would love to know where you got that “belt” that has cut outs such as those on a violin.

    So my modern lounge pants are always too long for me and over the years I've gotten in the habit of tied knots at the ankles or if you cut ties and tie in a bow. Same for knee length too. I am petite and I like to knot and tie the bottoms and I prefer it to elastic cuffs. Just how I wear my pants now because I don't wear jeans. I'm not into looking like a pirate or gypsy but I like what works for me and I'm never styled like other around me so I never cared if ppl think I look a certain way. Oh well. But I prefer knickerbocker. Or anything a big more loose in the seat and adjustable waist and cuffs. I can't wait to make wool pairs for winter and I'm going to try a few other materials for when I go mountain biking in heat of summer. I won't, nor can I wear leggings I have health issues and prefer more loose clothing than most athletic clothing these days. I have circulation issues too. I need layers but nothing too tight and need extra layers around my lower legs, ankles and feet but don't want long pants. 2 layers of socks, knickerbockers works just fine and add leg warmersif needed.. I'll add gaiters for extreme hiking and mountain biking and think I'll much prefer a leather gaiter to modern biking pads. For winter under dresses too nice warm flannel bloomers and long socks. Making quilted skirt and ponchos for me and my daughter for camping this year and will make wool overalls and bloomers too. I'm curious about making wool chaps for whatever reason but I'm curious if I'd like them as an option under dresses and in extreme winter weather I'm curious if I could replace my snow pants for wool chaps over wool pants and add a short quilted riding skirt. Want to make underclothes chaps for under dress and over clothes chaps for days I need snow pants to go out on walks. I want less layers in some areas and extra layers in other areas and curious how adjustable pants that are not normal pants like knickers and chaps could work out if constructed differently and with different materials. I want warm legs without putting on pants. I get very hot too I think chaps could be great ventilation and ease for movement and health issues in my stomach area.... something like suspender tights but not tight at all. Like garter belt but more 1 piece. Id have to play around making leg warmers and bloomers and see if i can just clip them together. Im sure there are easy ways lolol. But like idea of rethinking historical garments for today
