  • Nikon D5600 "5 Min Portrait": How to Take Professional Pictures with Only Kit Lenses. Download the RAW files right here froknowsphoto.com/d5600/ ‎
The challenge for this "5 Min Portrait" / "Real World Review" was to use the Nikon D5600 and only the two kit lenses that are packaged with the camera (if you purchase the package). The two lenses are the Nikon 18-55 kit lens and the 70-300 kit lens which does not have VR.
The scene was Pam Cakes, a Philadelphia Cupcakery. There wasn't a lot of space, not a lot of light in the back, but at the end of the day, the results speak for themselves.
Once again this video proves it's the photographer not the camera. Yes the right tools help but if all you have are kit lenses, you can still get fantastic results.

Jared, I was recently the second shooter at a friends wedding this weekend. Your 5 minute portrait series inspired me to get an AdoramaPix book made for them as a wedding gift. Really incredible quality they can put out at that lab. I think you should do a video about books, like layout and design, different options.

  • @keithspillett7312

Great video. People tend to forget/not realise that prints will generally look less grainy/noisy than an image on the screen, because the print displays much higher resolution. And, as you so rightly say, it's all about the person behind the camera, rather than the camera itself. Years ago, I worked for Kodak Ltd's advertising department, and we had to create demonstration pictures on all new consumer cameras. The cameras were often generically pretty poor in quality, but the pics looked great because we knew what we were doing.

Hi there Jared, I've probably watched this video about 3 times from start to finish to get some good composition ideas using this same gear although my 70-300 zoom has VR. I really liked the way you explained what you're doing and why, what to look out for, angles and lighting. Little obstacles are important.......like some newbie mistake (guilty) of shooting a friend's wedding and then later realising that my damn shadow was in the frame between me and the new Married couple....and unfortunately that was back in the film days when you had to make each photo count. Cheers for the excellent tuition Jared.

My friend got the Nikon from Costco with the kit and he asked me to help him, and I use a Sony a7ii and Sony a7r ii and was I shocked that his d5500 was so easy to use. I was shocked. How much faster it was easy to set up because of the touch screen. And trust me the Sony touch screen is limited on the Sony 6500 and the a9. Hope Sony follows this trend that is actually useful. Your review is accrue. And it's definitely a winner in my book. Great lenses with the kit. And the prices wow.but then again I'm not sure how trough it is compared to my beasts in nasty weather or dust.
