  • In this video we pick up from part 2 and install the piston and cylinder. Then a leakdown test is performed before finishing the build. The clutch and the flywheel were installed as well as all the other parts needed. Once it was built the chainsaw was started and tuned.

It is smart to put the circlip in the piston is on the intake side, first. You want to make sure that one is in, properly. If it comes out it will smoke the piston and cylinder. After the intake side circlip is in I will fight getting the exhaust side one in. I also use an old wrist pin to tap each side of the piston with. This wrist pin will make sure the circlip is seated properly. I insert it in each side of the piston and give it a light tap with my four ounce brass hammer. The circlip is properly installed when it is in its slot in the piston and under the beveled end of the wrist pin. If so installed, it will not come out. If one comes out, let it be the exhaust die one because all it will do is end up inthe muffler. If the intake side comes out it will destroy the piston and cylinder and possibly lock up the saw. This is the voice of experience.

I use a business card to set the air gap and with the coil loose I rotate the flywheel until it’s magnet pulls the coil towards the flywheel. The business card will separate the coil from the flywheel. I then tighten down the coil screws with my other hand pushing the coil towards the flywheel. I tighten the coil screws tight but not overly tight. I also put blue Locktite on them before I put them in.

Great job. Your commentary was crystal clear and easy to follow. I have a opportunity to purchase one of these saws locally not running. After watching this I think I'll get it and do a rebuild.

Thanks for a great video. I noticed that when you went to install the new air filter that it had an extra bolt in the middle that got in the way of reinstalling the air filter cover. So you set the new filter aside and used the old air filter. I had the same problem but I was able to fix the new air filter by using a clamp to force the extra bolt out of the new air filter. Then I was able to install the new air filter. Thanks for the videos.

Great Tutorial Video Series, I have just watched all three of them tonight. I admire your chilled out attitude to Chainsaw major surgery and your easy to follow commentary, something a lot of UA-camrs don't get,
I have an old Stihl 028 AV stored in my workshop that has not run for 10 years+, the last time I used it it would not idle and was down on power, so I suspected it had bad Crank Seals that were leaking.
Your Video Series has inspired me to fish out the old Stihl 028 and restore it, I have most of the tools (except for the crankcase splitter, but I have a Mig Welder so I think I could make one), and I am usually pretty good at fixing stuff, so what the I am going for it.
Lord knows where you sourced some of the parts (I am in Scotland), but I will try my best.
    Many thanks for the Videos.

Great work my friend. I have this exact saw and I love it. Problem is I can't rely on it at the moment so I think I need to do the full strip down and rebuild as it's probably pulling air somewhere. Where did you get your pressure tester?

Could you please tell me the part # of the coil and flywheel you used? Especially the coil. Would be greatly appreciated. Again fine job on the rebuild.

@@MarleyJaxGarage i have a Stihl 028 AV that had been sitting for at least 15 years. Going to try a aftermarket Carb on it. I was going to replace the coil as well. I have been told that the new coils can eliminate the points. I saw a guy cut away both wires (one to points and the other the the kill switch) with a coil that just had the wire to the kill switch. Waiting on parts. Really enjoy the videos you make.
