Thin Lizzy - Borderline

- A song from their album "Johnny The Fox" (1976)
Lyrics:
Midnight in the big city
At the bar drinking all on my own
Just thinking about that girl and me
How something's going wrong
Mister, tell me, what's my saving grace?
The back room boys
Were all telling me
I'm a borderline case
Back on the borderline one more time
Seven beers and still sober
It's time to change to something stronger
I cannot take this scene no longer
She could have told me it's all over
Back in my home town
The old place is still the same
But time can cast a spell over something
You can't go back again
Back on the borderline one more time
Mister, fill me another
Till I go crazy and it turn my mind around
Just pass that bottle one more time
And slowly drink it down
Jeanie can I tell you?
The shame of my disgrace
It's just love or rejection
For this borderline case
Back on the borderline one more time
I'm on my bended knees crawling
I'm begging you darling
Best Irish band ever. Forget U2
Half Irish
Phil was my favorite musical storyteller. He could make me wanna fight, fall in love, laugh, cry,in the span of one album.
So true.
Preach!! 👊🏼
In one song..
For all the fame and credit Thin Lizzy have gotten over the years they are very underappreciated in this regard, Phil WAS a great lyricist/songwriter ... very every man and to the gut.
That's great and all, but Brian Robertson, the guitarist, wrote this song.
My Uncle introduced me to Lizzy in 1992. I was an 18 year old headbanger. He gave me Live & Dangerous and Jailbreak. That was the greatest gift anyone has ever given me.
Your uncle rocks
MY FERST ROCK FAVORITE WAS DEFINITELY THIN LIZZY I USED TO LISTEN TO MY UNCLE PLAYING THINS SONGS. IN JUST CASSETTES , THANKS UNCLE , YOU OPENED THE ROCK AND ROLL DOOR FOR ME AND NOW I ENJOY EVERY HEAVY METAL HITS , AND I OWN 2 GUITARS , I PLAY THEM WELL , I EVEN SING AT KARAOKE , WITH MY BROTHER EDD , WE JAM OL TYME , THANKS TO MY UNCLE , AND LOVE LIZZYS MUSIC , AND ORL ROCK MUSIC , CHEERS BEN BOSEN , WEIPA AUSTRALIA.
Live and Dangerous easily the greatest live album of all time!
Metallicas cover of this brought me here. What a beautiful song
Only Thin Lizzy can rock hard and at the same time hit you with deep emotion.
Yelp ✨🌟💫🎶🎵
100%👍
Lynyrd Skynyrd can do that as well. I love Thin Lizzy though.
Guns N' Roses also can
Phil Lynott had BPD and thats what this song is about "it's juts love or rejection for this borderline case" I feel that line the most.
Phil was the real cowboy. Bon Jovi couldn't even plug in to his amp
Brian Matheney and many others besides!
@@squinteastwood4637 John Bongiovi (his real lame ass name) is a well known douche who makes music for douchebags. Phil is a fucking legend who makes music for cool people.
Bon Jovi covers songs by Lizzy and pose with the statue of Phil, they are obvious fans so why all the hate?
Lmao..so true
1 and
James sent me here 🤘👍
Insanely underrated, the storytelling bleeds out of them...
Couldn’t agree more! 🖤
When I was a kid, my dad would play this CD on his car and it was my favorite song. It was the third music from the album, so I'd ask him "put on music 3!" I'm 21 now. I'm also a Pink Floyd fan because of him
Your dad has great taste in music. Can’t go wrong with Lizzy and Floyd
Because of me Dad I was brought up on Country n Western, Elvis, Johnny Cash. I seen Boxcar Willie with him in about 78, at Butlins. Chet Atkins was his favourite Guitarist. 1st Band I got into and seen Live,
Stiff Little Fingers. Always love me Dad for
giving me a good start.
Good for you , tell your dad I said ty, this music is slowly fading way , and it's a shame.
Another classic song by Thin Lizzie. I must be honest, I'm 38 and until about a few months ago I only knew 2 or 3 songs by them. Now I'm amazed at how under appreciated they were. Probably the most underrated classic rock band of all time. So many beautiful songs with such authentic emotion. Rock on Phil!
I saw them two times in Stockholm (Sweden) during the early 80's, they blew any band away on the stage… I also saw many other bigger bands around that period; like Rainbow, Boston, Police, Tom Petty, etc (not bad bands/artists at all!). Thin Lizzy had a great rocking "stage persona" as a band with Phil Lynott fronting them of course! They really rocked on stage! The live album "Live and Dangerous" really captures that too. The thing is, they also had many songs through out the whole spectra of the rock music genre... That could however have served them a bit bad when it comes to growing a huge fan base, when sort of "switching between softer to harder rock", like they did… But there's also another reason they might have become less known to the global public and that's the big USA tour in the late 70's that was almost (or was?) cancelled because of the guitarist Brian Robertson, when he severly hurt his hand in a bar fight and just some day before the tour was to begin… Probably hurt the band a lot too... Phil was a great lyricist! He plays with rhyming words in a very nice, fun & intelligent way, also has a great, (deep?) voice that goes well with the music! Also has his own way of vocal phrasing! Really good song writer and great bass-/guitar player too! Just listen to his solo album "Solo in Soho". And it's spelled "Lizzy" ;)
I am impressed that someone your age is open to great music in our era. I'm 61 and can't get my group your age to even listen. This is my favorite thin lizzy song and few people know of it
UFO & Thin Lizzy two bands totally underappreciated in the US.
@@TheRobGuard 👏👏 agree with every word you said.
I discovered them when I was 32 or so, now I'm 40. Definitely one of my favorite bands. These underrated songs I appreciate more than any of thier hits. They should have been so much bigger.
the most underrated band of all times!!!!!!!
Red Amen!
One of Thin Lizzy's greatest ever tracks. Takes me back to my teenage days!!
One of the best albums of all times two Johnny the fox
Same here!
I just discovered this gem of band and all I can say is that i wished i lived in the 80s!
Listen to this song everyday, absolutely beautiful, and so sad.....
what is sad about the song may I ask?
@@CBT5777 that is poetry my friend..well said.👌👍
✌🇮🇪🎸
This whole album is massively underrated. so many hidden gems on this record!
Nothin but guitars, drums and a great voice...Thin Lizzy was the best band ever..(my opinion...)
Jeff Ross I have the same opinion as well. This band has better songs and deeper lyricks than Led Zeppelin.
Truly the most underrated band of all time. My all time favorite music.
rolla led Zeppelin has taken the spotlight too much on 955.5 bullshit they always plays the boys are back on town but never ever the greats of thin lizzy......its a discrace.....fuck!!!
I guess you're including the bass in with the guitars!
Of course....Phil was a wonderful and very talented Bass player...
Brian Robertson co wrote this song. Amazing fills and solo as always. No other can compare to his playing and the emotion he gets from the guitar and perfect notes he picks.
James Hetfield brought me here
Some bands are bigger than the hall of Fame.
Those lyrics hit the heart dead-center.
It is unbelievable they are not in the hall of fame pure rubbish!!
Whose Hall of Fame?Thin Lizzy will always rank.
You're right, the Hall of Shame is pure rubbish. Thin Lizzy, the best band ever!
I can't understand it either,Lizzy are as popular as ever,Phil was a genius songwriter..even Bob Dylan said it. Hall of fame...until Phil and the boy's get there it will be a hall of shame🎸♠🎶
Well who needs a hall of fame when your just this good , trend binders and lovers of music are two different beasts.
34 years today since the sun went down on the lyrical Lynott...
I'm almost 50. I appreciate great music.. Thin Lizzy is at the pinnacle with bands like Rush, Jethro Tull, ELP, et al. I couldn't care less if they ever get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Crap.It means nothing .True rock fans know who the best are.
This is a top 5 Thin Lizzy song for me. Very dark and emotional. Beautiful lyrics, delivery of lyrics (as always with Phil), and musicianship. I been where the character is in this song.
My absolute Lizzy favorite ballad, listening to it with the same joy like I did back in 77 when I heard it for the first time!
He can acctually start the waterworks... a musician thats capable of that," in my case", should be rewarded…...R.I.P....
Goosebumps. Listening to this today, of all days, just a great song.
Apparently when Jon Bon Jovi _ or however you spell it - came across Thin Lizzy's back catalogue, he said he was really moved esp by the songs about cowboys and cowgirls and heading southbound etc. So he basically pinched the ideas because Lizzy weren't around then. And he comes up with the following lyric "I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride, I'm wanted, dead or alive"............Ahem, I think Phil would have chucked those words away and put it down to having a bad day at the office.
It makes you realise how good Phil Lynott was as a lyricist. The lyrics to Cowboy Song and Southbound for instance are just brilliant, helping you form a strong mental image in your head. "I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride" on the other hand is just plain naff- like Bon Jovi really. Pale imitations - or should I say pale horse imitation? 😉
Brilliantly said 🎸🎸
Clint Eastwood's greatest hits is comin' out soon
Great Thin Lizzy song, hidden gem!
100%
Even the lesser known songs from this band are amazing.
my dad loves thin Lizzy
Probably my fav track off this album
Probably my favorite ballad of all time.
oh yeah!
absalutly.....
Yes, also Fools gold
bom gosto!
Mine too. Going to have it at my funeral
Hard to listen to this without drinkin some whisky, and shedding a tear. God bless you Phil.
In point my friend. 👌🤘💪
I saw Motorhead the show before Lemmy's last...
They played four songs with a ten minute intermission between each.
The fourth song was a tribute to thin Lizzy ! Nuf Said Lemmy cut the show early and died two weeks later. Rock n fuckn roll
Love this song, prolly my favorite. It's tender, but slices right to the bone. If you've ever had an addiction, or realize you're about to lose out to an addiction it hits that much harder. What a tremendous loss with Phil, and TL as a whole. I'll be listening to this band til the day I die... 🤘💜🤘
Phil got it, end of
in my opinion this is just Phil sitting in a dressing room after a show alone and writing this song with a glass of whiskey and crying and this is just his soul pouring out
Actually I think Robbo wrote that one.
With some help from Philo.
Rest in peace Phil! THIN LIZZY THE BEST BAND TO EVER TOUCH LAND!
Best band ever, Phil was obviously a great song writer and poet and a very underrated baas player and a beautiful vocalist. Flanked by serious guitarists and the outstanding Brian Downey on drums to make up best band ever. Even Freddie Mercury felt hang on a minute there supposed to be supporting us in America but there getting a better response from the crowd than we are. Only for the oul side tracks so to speak, lizzy were the number 1 live band in the world AT THAT TIME
Disagree Queen blew Lizzy out of the water on there Queen/Lizzy Tour in 1977.
@@gedbill4058 2 brilliant bands, everyone entitled to an opinion. Nobody is right or wrong. I prefer lizzy, you prefer Queen. 👍
@@michaelboland5738 Lizzy were a great band but Queen achieved so much more even Scott Gorham admitted they blew Lizzy off stage on the 1977 tour.
@@gedbill4058 well said Ged 👍 lizzy were a great band and queen achieved more as you rightly pointed out. Queen were together twice as long and were probably a more grounded band business wise. I wasn't trying to turn it into a who's the best band competition with my initial comment. All I meant was it was great to get a compliment from the great Freddie bout how well the crowd enjoyed lizzy on the Toor.
@@michaelboland5738 As a compliment to Thin Lizzy any band were not suitable for Queen to go on tour with they had to be outstanding and Thin Lizzy were that band the same way as Status Quo supported Queen on there 1986 Magic Tour.
This always makes think of Phil as the hurt fatherless boy. Great song but it almost hurts thinking back to those mid 70s years
Just brilliant can't beat thin Lizzy I'm 64 and was 13 when I first started listening to Lizzy been hoocked ever since
Seven beers and still sober, it's time to change to something stronger.
My favorite line
@@JosephO75 unfortunately for Phil it was favorite lines of something much stronger
@@chriswalford9228 Yeah, all of the rock legends died so young and most of them of drug related causes sadly. Phil should have given it up
@@anton2417 “I got to give it up...got to give it up, that stuff”
I'm on my hands and knees and crawlin, I'm begging' you darlin'
I've been passively supporting/praising this band for the past decade; however, l didn't KNOW the depth of greatness they really were/are. How disingenuous could l have been? ? Oh well, .. These guys are magnificent.
Man, you look like Jimi Hendrix
So so good
Lynnot was one the greatest rock poets ever.
Jeanie, how genius is that?
The jeanie in the bottle...
Ain't heard this song in 45 years. It's better than I remember. Great. Just great.
On the best drinking songs you can never listen to was the borderline unless people forget this but they were the best lead guitar duo of all time
What a song! Power and melody and lyrics you will never forget..
Best rock band ever...I think they were openers in the States however they headlined every show..ask Queen they'll ya!!😜
one of The Great bands ever... \m/
If there was ever a song that encompasses nostalgic depression it’s this song.
A fantastic song and performance. I wonder why they didn't get to be a bigger band like Queen.
Been listening to this magic ever since I was in the carseat of my dad's old Honda Accord. 15 or so years later (20 years old now), it still hits me like when I first heard it. I was born in the wrong generation :-/
You were born in the wrong time. But you can catch up listening to music like this
One of the best lyrics, from this genius writer.
I love the scenery.
I've been there, on the borderline, not knowing where the hell I'm going.
Lynnot was such a master at recycling clichés...
I love this song.
Back to comment again on the fortitude of Lizzy;s ability to ROCK w the best... I like many others growing up in the states have been deprived of all these deeper cuts while growing up in the 80's and 90;s and relying on FM radio. While The boys are back and jailbreak are sure fire smash rock jamz the further I've traveled down the Lizzy rabbit hole the more I say these dudes can easily stand up to the rock n roll giants namely Zepplin,The Who, Hendrix etc. Not sure why there is no love for these boys in the Rock HOF but maybe just another example of it ain't what u know it's who u know. Respect Fellas
This help to show only a little of the sheer class/brilliants of Phil and his boys in Thin Lizzy, the story, the music, the playing and singing. No other band could quite reach the height that Lizzy did
James made me listen to Phil.....ty metallica & thin lizz
Best band ever....phil paris lynott....lives forever in our hearts ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Only just come across this song, better late than never.
How come I never listened to this GEM of a song before?!?!💎
What can I say that havent been said, pure class, awesomeness, no one and I mean no one is even good enough to even shine their shoes , long live LIZZY.

Great band. Saw them twice in the 70s. Downey really good drummer.
One of the best.
GREATEST CLASSIC ROCK BAND EVER EVER EVER...
🦾🇮🇪🎸🎤🎼👑🖤
A little-known fact is that Brian Robertson wrote almost all of this song. Philo helped him out on the lyrics, but the idea was Robbo's.
+Dimitri Mitrovic I can well believe it, Robo is a piss head no?
Robbo is the coolest
It was NOT Robertson, your talking about Silver dollar. Stop talking this filth
hey STOOPID- read this and tell me why it's necessary to accuse someone of talking 'filth'
Thin Lizzy - Borderline (Lynott, Robertson) .....THOSE are the credits.....
Dimitri Mitrovic That is true! I just read the book about T.L.
just found my dad's Johnny the fox record, this song skips quite a bit but still cuts right through ya... live long Philo
+MsCookieJay Simply amazing Band, Your Dad had good taste xxx
A masterpiece! Love it since 1976.

My Favorite Thin Lizzy Album
Wow, the brilliant discovery of Thin Lizzy in my mid-teenage youth, and this was the 2nd Album of theirs I got. Many more afterwards.., Loved them all. Shaped my musical tastes forever. Can't believe I got to see them play (with the fantastic new guys) a couple of weeks ago at Penrith, up very close & personal. What a show. Thanks Boys. A Rock Treat never to be forgotten.
Seven beers and still sober! know what that about! love lizzy
