I’m a long time DaVinci colourist, features, tv series commercials, since Resolve was in beta many years ago and this is the best tutorial I’ve seen on noise reduction. Congratulations on this video.
How did you know I was posting a project with a lot of underlit night exteriors?! Amazing. One addition with my own workflow: when I'm grading RED .R3D files, I crank the ISO to see everything well, do my NR and then lower the ISO again - excellent results. Thanks, Darren.
Every time you manage to amaze me with your skill, knowledge and enthusiasm of the possibilities in Black Magic and share it with, proffesionals and myself as an amateur
This was the tutorial I was looking for since I have ton of low light footage atm. Im so glad it came from you since your CG tutorials are the best on youtube.
Thank you Darren, for your top-notch NR and DVR tutorials. They really are a cut above many others on UA-cam. You manage to avoid the overly complex and unnecessary steps that many teach, making your free tutorials far more valuable than some paid ones. Appreciate your effort in sharing these.
This is easily the best tutorial on Resolve noise reduction. I had always gone by sight and taste but using the scopes was eye-opening. The insight with A/B blew me away; incredible. My workflow instantly improved. Thank you sir for your help.
I love that your explain your logic in placing the NR in your node tree ! Instead of automatically putting your NR at the beginning of your node tree, it could be smart for it to be fed by a previous node information in some cases. Great video as always :)
You are going to get WAY MORE views on this video down the line considering low light is one of the main problems of video with people who can't afford the equipment that usually aids with keeping noise down. Thank you.
What a brilliant tutorial! My thesis film is playing in 2 days. Your node tree tutorial helped me color it, and it is looking great! Thank you so much!
I’m currently working on one project and for the past three days I watched several videos about Noise Reduction in Davinci Resolve. This one is the best what I’ve have seen so far. Thank you Darren for sharing this information with us. 😊
Your tutorials are so detailed and well made. I'm a beginning colorist still struggling in Davinci and your videos have done so much for me! Glad I discovered your channel, thank you!
Darren, you are fabulous. For me the best I have seen on UA-cam and I've seen a lot. So enthousiastic, clearly, in depth and very good explained, in fact in all your tutorials. Thanks giving your 'secrets'.
Darren, I appreciate your expertise, your calm, relaxed way of imparting knowledge and the fact that I always receive valuable help and advice from you. Thanks for that!!
That was bloody amazing Darren. With Yourself , Cullen Kelly and a guy called Nomadic George you all make learning Davinci amazing. Keep up the good work buddy
This was serendipitous. I was planning to search for some NR tutorials today. I was specifically interested in learning how to restrict it to the shadows. I saw this on my home page when I opened YT and ended up learning more than I was looking for. Thanks, Darren!
I've just started using Davinci and got into node-tree edits. Your Tutorials just made everything so amazingly easy to understand! Love to learn more from you in the future
Darren thank you so much for sharing this wonderful knowledge with everyone. I am glad to have access to the right information. Your narration and video lengths are great!
As always, excellent explanation. I loved how you used the qualifier to limit it to the shadows only. And the tip on using the scopes to see when NR stopped affecting the image is awesome!
Making documentaries, I deal with noise frequently. Thanks, Darren, for giving me an effective and complete workflow for dealing with it. Your tutorials have really helped me!
Absolutely the best channel for learning about Davinci and color grading. Thank you so much for your generosity. This video really explained a confusing topic for me, thank you.
Hi Darren! Great video. Chroma noise is truly unpleasant. For years, I've shot in on Blackmagic cameras (the original, 4k and 6k), and that noise on raw footage has always driven me crazy. DaVinci Resolve's noise reduction tools are effective, but on high ISOs they can blur all the details and yet not remove the chroma noise, as you showed on the video. I've been studying and experimenting with a new approach that focuses on preserving image details while reducing chroma noise on heavily noisy images. I've discovered that with a combination of Resolve's tools and a custom-made DCTL, it's possible to transform chroma noise into a film-like texture. Works perfectly in the workflow on the video. It also removes some compression artifacts! I'd like to send it to you to try out the powergrades.
Diving into troubleshooting some strange artifacts in certain areas of the frame, and thanks to your fantastic tips, I was able to navigate through the options and effectively fix the issues. Much appreciated, Darren!
Another great video, your presenting style is fantastic, clear, concise and easy to follow, none of the usual UA-cam fluff to extend runtimes and feed the algorithm. This video dropped at the perfect time, as I have about 5+hours of footage to clean up, that was shot in very challenging conditions, never thought to do it via the scopes 🤦♂️, I have got much better results following this guide, along with last weeks node tree, than I have ever got before.
The "Radius" option in Spatial NR is for DVR to analyse NR within specific radius within the clip, it does not directly affect the clip's NR but decides how much of CPU intensive is your clip NR process. Choosing a smaller radius will enable DVR to scan a smaller radius for noise.
You are amazing, thank you so much. I just started back into videography to see how far can I get. I was always afraid of DaVinci Resolve, I think that's why I wasn't moving forward with shooting videos at all. Got my cameras very long time ago and now recently decide to get busy and shoot. I found your channel about a month ago and I'm hooked with it, even at my regular work I'm watching your videos come home and practice. It really is a big help and motivation for me, I have learned so much. I can't thank you enough!
Nice added bonus episode to your node tree - thanks for that. As far as all the questions of where and why for NR or grain etc. My logic that I use is always put anything that actually smooths out things i.e. noise reduction, smooth power windows, blurs, glow etc. before any texture or grain type OFX. You can see why easily by putting in a grain node and turning on the "grain only " and then going a few nodes downstream and adding a soft power window and/or blur etc. it really shows how it affects the grain / texture - depending on how much you do - just smoothing out a person's skin will wreck the film grain emulation completely. So like you I also put the noise reduction up front. But for ripple reasons, I have it on all the trees in the same numbered place. Not so much to ripple the noise reduction , but it keeps all the numbering for every other node in order. I also think of primaries as nodes for me to get the footage to a place that I wish that it would have been from the camera. And obviously I would love if I was supplied with noise free footage. I like how you visually used the scopes as part of setting up for the noise reduction. That's a great tip that I'll have to remember for next time I use NR. I think I saw that you will be doing a live thing before christmas. If you don't see me in the chat - Hope you and your family have a great holiday. cheers to you and have a prosperous and exciting new year.
Thanks Jim - always good t hear your thoughts. This really came about after the node tree episode as good for my word the BBC doc uses same node tree (nearly!!) as the one I broke down last episode. Yes there will be a Christmas LIVE - not set date yet but very likely 20th December 1800 GMT. I'll post in the community when Im sure - just juggling work schedule! Cheers to you too and we will speak before Xmas Im sure!!
Darren, I'm on a shoot right now. And I'm about to do a quick grade on some dailies for the client. Thanks so much for all these videos you make. I love working in Davinci, and I always learn so much from you. Keep it up! These are fantastic.
Glad I stumbled upon this one. From Color Stabilization to NR. Another great lesson that I will need later on down the road. Darren is 2 for 2 when Ive needed the help the most. THANKS!! 🙂
Not being a pro in editing I find your explanations clear. Not only what you should do but also the reason why which is giving me a lot of "AHA" moments. As a DOP and underwater shooter I am even thinking with editing in mind as I shoot. Thank you for your great tutorials.
Wow, I'm actually using a tool correctly for Noise Reduction and that's A/B. I saw it on a random UA-cam episode from years and years ago, and I've never seen anybody else use it other than you. However what I've learned from this episode, is not to use NR on every single clip, which is something that I've been doing since Day One of owning the Studio license. Its very hard to find any tutorials let alone good tutorials, such as yours, on Noise Reduction. I am now going to immediately stop using 5 for the "Frames Range" which can only help my render speeds at about 7 frames at the moment. Every day is a school day, and I never realised that you could pin-point where you added Noise Reduction. I shall be watching this episode quite a few times and definitely improve my technique for my next masterpiece. Have a relaxing Christmas. This year should be my last working Christmas for the next few years. The magic of the big day tends to fall a bit flat after eating a bone dry, stone cold, Turkey Dinner from a cardboard box sat in the cab. But it beats working for a living.🤣🤣
Hi Frank. Well i hope this at least helps your render speeds and probably the quality too - 5 frames doesn't always mean better quality ! It can skew your results!! All the best and wish you a good christmas dinner - keep an eye out for my xmas livestream coming!!
@@DarrenMostyn That's good to know that 5 frames doesn't always mean better. Practically everybody on UA-cam land says 5 is better as well as saying Motion Radius as Large. Its like the blind leading the blind. Enjoy your evening ploughing through the comments. With my latest masterpiece, it took me all of five minutes to read and reply to my comments. Remember those days when you first started? 🤣🤣
Great work, Darren! This NR tutorial will help me in future videos. I never even considered NR while composing my videos. Thank you again for putting these DVR tutorials together.
Many thanks for this! I've seen quite a few DR users use this, but never really get into the weeds as to "why" certain settings are being used to dial it in just right.
DVO tools are excellent for noise reduction and grain management, DVO Clarity in particular. They are also available as OFX plug-ins. Have you ever used the splitter combiner node to isolate noise specific to one channel?
The DVO tools are best in class! I started on Nucoda colour grading system back in early 2000's well before Resolve and the tools then were always the best and these are the best parts of that system and improved!! Can't deny! However, this tutorial is about what is available for Resolve users. Yes, ive isolated channels before - good tip.
Bang on ! DVO still best in class in software and was great on the NuCoda( though I still miss my hardware DVNR strapped to my TK ;). However AFAIK DVO is just CPU and not GPU savvy … at least it was when I tried it when it came out as OFX for my Mac setup … maybe it’s better on the new apple chips ? Anyway … Davinci’s NR is superb … great tutorial Mate :)
Just a totally amateur here… but I’m really learning a tremendous amount from your channel. Great demonstrations that are easy to follow and understand.
Great explanation of noise reduction strategy. I have played with the knobs for hours but you have shared a process and a means for determining the limits. Many thanks Darren!
Perfectly explained and paced that even a hobbyist like me could follow. I should a lot with a gopro internally and the noise is always there due to the low light, so thanks, i can have a crack at dialling it down now.
Thanks Darren, very helpful tutorial on Noise Reduction... Would be very helpful to know what you're looking for on the RGB Parade to tell you that that's noise... I can see that the "blurriness" in the scope goes away when NR is applied..
Thank you very much for this tutorial. We use NEAT video plugin for noise reduction in my job. We found out Davinci inbuild noise reduction is making artefacts in the picture. We are shooting clasical music concerts and lots of moving violin players, etc. That movement during the play is warping background behind that player if we apply davinci noise reduction. Neat video didn't cause this problem. But it is realy taxing for the system. Maxed out Mac Studio only manages 10fps render of the shot with noise reduction effect. Still better then Z8 with double Nvidia 5000 in it. That machine manages 6fps at the best. Usualy it is 2fps per shot render.
I agree NEAT is better - but i usually need the Resolve one for speed in doc work - we dont have the time to use 3rd party plug-ins and the results aren't worth it (vs time I mean!) if you use Resolve NR well.
I love your videos mate! This is exactly what I needed but you always dust every video with lovely additional tips. I've saved this one into Craft for my 'must do!' workflow instructions! Cheers mate!
Hi Darren your videos are absolutely amazing, thanks so much. I would like to know if you use sharpening much and where you would add it in the node tree.
At this moment (4:44) the light bulb went on for my first time ever - mind you I've been using this for about 8 years and never understood noise and what "frames" meant. Ok continuing to watch now...
Darren you are amazing! I learn something new every time. I thank you. The node in front of the LUT 2383 expects Rec709 cineon film log. After the LUT I still have a CST with Rec709 Gamma 2.4. I think Cineon needs to be resolved back to gamma 2.4. I think the image is not as flat and nicer with this node. Is that right? However, I only assigned gain 0.4 to the LUT with the conversion back to gamma2.4. Without reconversion, the LUT is fixed at Gain 1.0.
Hi. Im struggling to follow your explanation, however it is ALL covered in this episode. ua-cam.com/video/A2OLQNSIJgU/v-deo.html Hope that helps. darren

Wow, thank you, this was the best NR tutorial with explaining what does what and your tips from real example. Now I know what I've been doing wrong :D

You’re the best, Darren! Thank you.
At this moment (4:44) the light bulb went on for my first time ever - mind you I've been using this for about 8 years and never understood noise and what "frames" meant. Ok continuing to watch now...
thank you so much Darren🙏

Glad it was helpful!
