Prior to 1979 revolution. Iran imported everything including bicycles.. Now they have started producing jet fighters, sub marines, missiles, cars, tractors, medicines. Slow and steadily they have achieved self reliance. Great Iranian civilised nation.

Iran also operates almost 200 F-4 Phantoms, the original F-4D, the improved F-4E and the RF-4E reconnaissance platforms, they have been in operation in Iran since 1968.
More then 400 F4....
Once i saw paper some work about number of F4s that had been delivered to iran and it was 370 F4E and D

Sasoun Papelyan I don’t think the number was that high, the deliveries of F-4s to Iran started in 1968 and in total it delivered 40 F-4Ds, 170 F-4Es and 30 RF-4Es before the revolution put a halt to the deliveries in 1979. This adds up to about 250 aircraft and this is before the horrific conflict with Iraq that saw a number of the aircraft destroyed in combat and so today that number would be a lot less. I could be completely wrong but from sources I’ve found no more than 250 phantoms were in Iran before 1979.

You left out the F-4 Phantom which is probably their #1 fighter, which is a U.S. fighter from the Vietnam era..😎
Correction @1:17. Chengdu J-7 was NOT developed into the CAC PAC JF-17 Thunder used by Pakistan. In fact, Pakistan greatly contributed to the development and testing of a highly improved version of Chengdu J-7 which its air force uses as F-7P.

They have tried for years but a number of things are holding them back. The main problem has been a poor economy as it’s biggest earner - it’s oil exports had been heavily sanctioned and therefore there was no good income and therefore budgets were too tight for any new modern aircraft. There are also United Nations embargo’s that stop other nations from selling aircraft to Iran as a few years ago Iran started talks with Russia to possibly buy Su-30s but UN resolutions prevented the sale. And finally there is ALOT of corruption with the IRIAF and heads of the organisations either are too incompetent or just too lazy to look at replacing their fighters so unfortunately for Iran a lot is against them to modernise it’s Air Force.
@@Christoff1996 on the surface it probably seems like what you said above, but fact is much deeper than that, .. IRIAF remains one of the most competent forces among all in Iran, regardless of its shortcomings and obsolete hardware.. what keeps Iran back from procuring new fighter fleet is not the money or lack of it, it's about where the money is being spent. IRGC is and has been allocated pretty much all the budget and they decide what army branches will get, which is very little to survive.. regardless of Iran's economy and price of the oil, Iran can spend well above its needs to have a highly capable and up to date armed forces, unfortunately money is being spent in trillions in proxy wars outside Iran's borders facilitated, distributed, and spent by IRGC under direct orders of the supreme leader. Under the new defense doctrine very little importance has been given to procurement of new jet fighters as they will be deemed useless against Iran's regime enemies, instead a substantial budget has been assigned to the IRGC missile force as a way of developing a much cheaper deterrent force instead of the air force.
K Ebadi I never thought about that, it’s a real set back as it goes to show how messed up their government is, to put its funds into getting involved in other wars and spreading its influence rather than trying to help their own defences, no wonder some of their tech has remained back-dated. There are a number of modernisation plans within the IRIAF, the most important is the upgrading of their F-14s to A-M standards (M - modernised) which overhauled the radar and avionics and bring their Cats into the modern age but I honestly don’t think the funds will be there to upgrade all 20 - 50 Tomcats left.
@@Christoff1996 absolutely correct, the technological know-how is there, they have the capability which was set up right by the Shah's Imperial air force when Tomcat fleet was purchased back in the 70s, it's mind boggling how they kept the Tomcats flyable let alone modernize them. Air force gets just enough to finish small numbers of each project for the regime to showboat, nothing more.
Iran should opt for JF-17 thunder block 3 to replace some of their older jets. They desperately need better BVR and avionics, which the JF-17 Block 3 offers. Best thing is that it's only $32 million.

You tried, but you missed some out, but beside that, this air force will never stand up to the Israeli air force. The reason is that these planes are just too old and there are too many types. The aircraft mechanics must be driven mad trying to keep up with each type. Iran needs to get rid of all their old planes slowly and then equip themselves with the best that Russia has to offer. A fleet of su-35s and su-34s would go a long way to giving them any real chance against the Israelis. The piolets should also go to Russia for very extensive training in the new aircraft. If Russia refuses, the whole thing could be done with China, I doubt that they would refuse. Having said all that, Iran should keep producing their fighters until they are world class. I am sure Iran can do this given time.

An assorted of large array of Ageing aircrafts! Very few F14s or F4s were still flying because lacking the spares, most of these planes has to be cannibal parts to fly! Iran could producing some parts but won't help much!
