RAISING RED WIGGLERS - Starting My Red Wiggler Farm

  • In this first video in my “Raising Red Wigglers” series, I show you how I set up my new red wiggler farm. I decided to start raising red wigglers and begin phasing out my mealworm farm for several reasons. First, red wigglers are less expensive to raise -- I don't have to buy wheat bran to feed them and can simply use table scraps and shredded paper. Second, red wigglers require less maintenance -- I only have to add food material to the red wiggler bins once a week whereas I have to clean and sort the mealworm bins every few days. Third, the red wigglers help me with my food composting, whereas my mealworms don't. Fourth, the red wigglers generate beneficial "castings" (just like my mealworms) that I can use in my garden. And finally, when I feed the red wigglers to my chickens, I don't have to worry if a few worms "escape" because they are beneficial to the soil and don't pose a threat if they start to proliferate (as can happen with darkling beetles). At worst, my chickens will just have more red wigglers to munch on! Of course, this is a new project for me, so we'll see how it goes, but I am hopeful that things will turn out great! As always, I'll keep you posted!

I've been raising red Wiggler's for several years now. With your system be sure to monitor their moisture. I use a box-in-box method with 27 gal totes. In the outer box I lay a big brick of Coco coir to catch the leachete - makes a great potting soil when fully hydrated plus the worms don't drown. I used to feed mine my kitchen scraps but it got to be a hassel bc the food really needs to be blended or masticated before giving it to them. So now I just get my food from the local juice bar. I also add a fine sand, fine charcoal - pre-biochar, and ground shells to the blended food. They gave gizzards so they need grit to process food quickly. Be careful bc if they don't have food it will be mass exodus! I've come out to my garage to find thousands of dead dried up worms. Message me if you have any questions.

Almost 700 worms in those little bins is going to stunt their reproduction. You need bigger bins or more bins with less worms to get the population to grow. Awesome set up and video.

That’s really nice worms farm , I have been searching that type of screens to cover my bins because the worms can crawl out!

Citrus is fine, freeze them first, my wigglers, ENCs and ANC's have no problem converting them to castings.

Right depth, but the extra moisture has nowhere to go.

I like the rack you're keeping the worm bins in. Did you build it? If not... where did you get it? Thank you.

Another good chicken food is black SOLDIER fly. They also eat anything you have from old meals ECT. They eat meat too.
They are supper fun to watch eat too. They are ravenous. The earthworms are a little boring and dont produce like Black SOLDIER fly.
You should try them. They are low maintenance and way more fun then earthworms

Mike what are your thoughts on soldier flies? they consume waste from cleaning chickens to leftover dinner scraps but you would have to have an enclosed shed and monitor the soldier fly larvae that consumes the waste food and feed that larvae to chickens or for fish pods with the same bin system you have .

At the bottom of each of my YT videos, I include a link to my Amazon storefront. There, you will find a section called “Mealworm Farming.“ In that section, I list several bins, totes, and lids that you can use with your mealworm farm. Each time you purchase from my link, I get a very small commission, which helps me continue making these videos. For my system, I used these pans: amzn.to/3FoYtgg and these lids: amzn.to/384RNI5. For the lids, I cut the top with a router and added mesh for ventilation. The mesh I used is here: amzn.to/3KTc8NV. I attached the mesh with this two-sided tape: amzn.to/3FmRynV. I then placed this gaffer’s tape over top: amzn.to/3FmRt3B. Hope that helps!

I have a questions. You know for an example, a wedding ring, just one finger would fit. If you get twice bigger size wedding ring where two fingers would fit inside together. I been checking on my first time trying to raise them. I notice there is some kind of band all around two worms together like the wedding ring , one ring on one end and the other ring on the other end. Looks like they are mating together? ? I notice that one of the two worms were sliding out of the band to separate from the other worm. Interesting. No clue what that means? Making cocoons?

At the bottom of each video I provide a link to my Amazon storefront. If you don’t have it handy, here it is again: www.amazon.com/shop/ranchermike. If you click on this link, under “Mealworm Farming,” you will find the bins and lids. And if you buy off my link, I get a very small commission from Amazon (no additional cost to you), which helps defray the cost of making these videos. So thanks in advance for your support, Tim!
