Came across this, and I'm a student pilot with low time. Man did this help tremendously. I will come back to this when I get confused, but I think I understand it better.
Hi Skip, just now found you but have subscribed! These vids are terrific. You speak in an easy to understand way and perfect for beginners like myself. I''m 72 and really appreciate the larger cursor arrow and the close up shots of the instruments. Thanks much for what you do.
Great series! Just watched all 18. I have lots of questions but will rewatch all 18 before asking as I probably missed a lot as a lot of the commenters before me obviously have. Wish this was available 50 years ago when I took a few lessons when getting out of the military. It might have changed the course of my life. You are a gifted teacher. Getting ready to set up an X Plane simulator enclosed cockpit so I wanted to learn to do things correctly to make it a learning environment rather than just a fun program.
Thanks so much Arpan!! Glad you liked the video and hope it helps. Yes sims are great tools and great fun, you can learn a lot without the expense of an instructor. Going for you pilot certificate? Good luck to you. Blessings, skip
Hey Skip! I’ll take to the time to further explain my situation in one your videos from this series, but for now I really just want to thank you for your work and effort! Thank you, you are helping us a lot!
Hi Nuno, Thanks so much really appreciate your kind words, looking forward to hearing about your situation. By the way, if you fly with X Plane 11 and are interested, X-Hanger has given me the rights to their Cessna 172N for X Plane 11, the airplane I use in most of my videos, and they have allowed me to give it away to anyone who would like to use it for following along in my videos. OMG. I’m starting with the itch of flying, but if I decide on it, can you be my instructor? LOL The way you explain everything is very easy to understand, thank you. 👍🏻

Thank you Skip. I am staying in the pattern but having a rough time. I get disoriented when I go left and right and lose track of the airport. The red line will help show me where I go wrong and hopefully I'll be able to land at the same airport I took off from instead of a field. Blessings back. Dennis
Hi Dennis, To help with keeping a tight traffic pattern use the compass rose on your heading indicator. When turning from one leg to the next note the tic marks at 360, 90, 180, and 270 on the indicator. When you start turning watch the heading you are "leaving" move around the indicator. if your turning from 360 watch the 360 move towards the 90 or 270 tic mark. as it gets close start leveling off. This is much easier than trying to go the math for the heading you need for the next leg. Remember you are only going 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile on crosswind and base so it's a short time before you will need to turn again. Hope this helps. Blessings, skip

I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks again Skip. oh, one other thing, I had the box checked for the map but I don't get a flight path, I get a map with a whole bunch of red marks.
Let me know how it goes. Hmmmmmm, don't know why you would not get a flight path might have to reinstall X Plane and see if that helps???? Cut the x-plane.exe file from the XP folder and paste it somewhere outside that folder then run the XP installer, it will reinstall the file, see if that works. If something goes wrong reverse the process and put the cut file back. Blessings, skip
Skip, on such a distant trip although I’ve got much of the six-pack and VOR’s down pat, I think a Direct-> would be easier. I saw another instructor on UA-cam mention the odd number altitudes. It was also my understanding that if you’re flying above an airports airspace you don’t have to contact them, i.e. over 7000’.
Hi DAm8658, Sure, you can do a Direct To it certainly would be easier but you miss out on the challenges of flight planning and flying it yourself not in AP. Many real life pilots have gotten into trouble using the Direct To function of the GPS because they ended up flying into restricted airspace. Mr. GPS doesn't know anything about airspace and has no problem flying through it. It will show you the airspace but won't avoid it when flying in Direct To mode. You are right about flying over airport airspace and in you case you would be flying at 7,500 so you have no problems you don't have to contact them. However other airports have airspace that goes higher than 7000ft. so you would need to check, however, there are no more airports in you flight plan you need to deal with at 7,500ft or above. Again you are flying a simulator you can do anything you want so just have fun. I personally like the challenge of flying VOR to VOR along with pilotage and dead reckoning when I am out of range of a VOR, that's the fun of a simulator you never get in trouble and you can learn a lot especially in the navigation areas. If you use "Direct To" you just sit back and watch the airplane fly itself, not much fun after an hour or so of just watching the screen. You have a great little flight why not just do your best going from VOR to VOR as you mentioned when we started this discussion, I think you will really enjoy the flight. Remember you can save your flight anytime and pick it up from where you left off so you don't have to do it all in one sitting. I flew a Baron 58 half way across the US just using the NAV Radios. When I was out of range of my next VOR I just kept flying the heading I was on that would have taken me to the VOR if I was in range. Just have to check the winds from time to time to see if I'm blown off course but eventually I"d pick up the VOR and if I was off course I just made corrections once I was tuned into the VOR and get back on course. It's very satisfying to do one of these flights and you learn a lot in the simulator and it really is like real life flying using the navigation radios. If you haven't watched my series on VOR to VOR navigation it might help you and it's a pretty short flight so you can try it out if you like, should take 90 minutes or so to fly, probably not quiet that long. check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/qoGHzQWbsXs/v-deo.html Hope this helps and hope you give your flight a try without Direct To. I really don't like using auto pilot in the simulator I feel like I'm watching TV. Don't give up! Good Luck, skip
Skip, How do you flip from com 1 to com 2 ? Is there a switch? Also, How did you get the red line that showed the flight path for the standard rate turn?
Hi Dennis, Switching radios is different for different aircraft so you need to check you Pilot Operating Handbook (POH). If you look closely in this video, above the Radio stack you can see two rows of buttons labeled COM1 COM2, NAV1 NAV2 etc. push the button for the radio you want to use, a green light lights up next to the radio in use. To get the "red line" go to the map and on the right side there are two check boxes, one is for flight path, check that box. Hope this helped :-) Oh, if you don't have a POH you can download a pdf version off the internet just search for your airplane's POH. Blessings, skip
Hi Skip. Owen from Downunder Australia again. I remember watching one of your videos where you showed how to place the Papi lights on your runway at Benton Field. I am using that for my training and was wondering which video that this was included in. Thanks and God Bless
Hi Owen, Here is a link to the video, what you want is towards the end of the video where I show you how to use WED, X Plane's World Editor. Let me know if that helps. Blessings, skip
Your videos are very helpful sir. Thank you for the effort. And just a quick note if you could just change the intro to something like a nicely flying cessna at sunset. It would look more appropriate for this type of tutorial series imo. Just a little suggestion. Anyways love the videos.
Hi vrutu, Glad to hear the videos help, thanks for watching. I suppose I'm due for a new intro video I'll see what I can come up with... Cessna at Sunset, could be a song :-) Blessings, skip
Hi Skip. My 1172 has a new radio, must find a vid that will teach me how to use it. Thanks p.s; Yoke are very hard to buy, Cannot find the CH Eclipse nowhere in Canada,
Hi John, The nice thing about the radios is they all work the same just look different and some have do a bit more. You can search for manuals in PDF format to download to. I have an Eclypse yoke that I will sell you if you like. Naturally it's used, been in the garage for a couple years now but it works fine. If you want it I'll check it out to make sure everything is working. Let me know and I'll send you my email address and we can work out the details there. Keep up the good work here, I really appreciate how you have been going through all the videos and letting me know how you are doing, very encouraging for me! Blessings, skip
@@WEHVideos Hi Skip. Glad to hear from you. Your videos are very interesting and I love watching them. You are a good teacher and from what I read, I am not the only one who think the same way. Many years ago I learned to fly the 172 here in Quebec City Canada. My friends were instructors so I had a chance to fly a lot with them when they had to deliver parcel to other airport. Your techniques would’ve been helpful many years ago to learn different things since it is in a visual form. (i.e: altitude density etc.) Your offer for the yoke is interesting but like I said I live in Quebec city in Canada and I think you must be from USA. Let me know how we could resolve that. Thank you again so much for your help. Cheers John. Sorry for my english but I’m am french speaking native.
Hi Mike, There are a few options for you. First and easiest is to program keys on your keyboard for COM and NAV radios. You can also purchase a second "mini" keyboard and label a bunch of keys to program a lot of functions besides the radios. I've done this because I purchased the new Honeycomb yoke and it doesn't have all the buttons and switches like I had on my old yoke. Next you can purchase the Logitech Flight Radio Panel $140. And Finally if you are handy you an build your own using the circuit board from an old usb keyboard. I started out this way and did a whole series on how to build your own panel. While my panel has all kinds of functions you could build one with just a few functions. Check out this link if you are interested. ua-cam.com/video/Du2wpw6AMcI/v-deo.html Naturally this is the most difficult and requires time a patience, however, with the Shelter at Home policy in place this might be a nice project :-) Hope one of these ideas help, please let me know. Hi Skip, I hope you are keeping well. I just have a few questions if thats ok. Is this correct: Active: Comm 1 = Depart Airport Tower Stby: Comm 1= Dest Airport Tower Active: Comm 2 = Dest ATIS Active: Nav 1 = VOR Freq Stby: Nav 1 = LOC Freq Also, what happens if an airport (small one) does not have A VOR or ATIS ? What do you enter instead ? I have notice that large airports have all freq for towers, ATIS, VOR and LOC but some smaller airports dont. What do you enter if they dont. For example Biggin Hill (EGKB) Airport Communications are: BIGGIN HILL Approach: 129.40 BIGGIN HILL ATIS: 135.67 BIGGIN HILL Tower: 134.80 How would i enter the above freq's to arrive safely. I am just trying to get my head around this 😫 Many thanks Martin
Hi Martin, When planning a flight it helps to know all the frequencies you will be using. You can set up the radios any way you like but setting the standby frequency for the Next frequency you will use helps a lot. So you first will need to set a comm radio to the departing airport frequencies. In a Non-towered airport you would use the Unicom frequency and listen for traffic and make your announcements for you departure. In your example you could setup Comm 1 for Approach and Standby frequency for the Tower as that's the order you will use the radio as you are arriving and use Comm 2 for ATIS. Remember the first thing you will do Before contacting Anyone is to get the ATIS information. There's no "official" order here the idea is to make the radio "workload" as simple as possible BEFORE you start your flight. Here's an example: Benton Field O85 (non-towered) to Redding Muni KRDD (towered) Comm 1 set for Benton Unicom Freq. 122.8 _ Standby Freq. set to Redding Tower 119.8 (be ready to enter Redding Ground121.7 into Standby for Comm 1 after 119.8 is active) Comm 2 O85 ATIS (if available) _ Standby Freq. Redding Muni ATIS 124.1 The flight looks like this after you set the radios: First get Comm 2 ATIS for Benton Field then flip the standby frequency 124.1 to active so you are ready when it's time to get Redding Muni ATIS Second use Comm 1 Unicom for Benton 122.8 to announce your intentions for departure. Third After your departure from Benton flip Comm 1 standby frequency 119.8 to active so you are ready to contact the tower and now enter Redding Ground 121.7 in Standby Fourth listen to Redding Muni ATIS Fifth Contact Redding Tower 119.8 and tell them your intentions. The tower call goes something like this: Redding Tower, Skyhawk 84DL at 2000ft over Sundial Bridge inbound to land with Xray (or current ATIS) then follow the instructions from the tower. After landing the Tower MIGHT tell you to contact Ground so all you have to do is flip the standby frequency 121.7 to active After acknowledging the towers instructions and contact Ground giving them you intentions. So for all this you only had to enter one new frequency, Ground, while in flight and this really cuts down on radio work giving you more time to be looking outside for traffic etc. You don't want to be looking at you radios too long when in a high traffic area! Hope this helps, let me know. Blessings, skip
@@WEHVideos Hi Skip, Thank you very much for replying and helping me out once again. I will be so happy if I can finally grasp the comms and radio procedures. I have read your fantastic detailed advice. I am just going to log on now and give it a try. I will let you know the outcome. Much appreciated and many thanks. Martin
Looking Good. There's a video later on in this series where we fly this exact flight I described here so you can watch the whole thing :-) Blessings, skip
@@WEHVideos Hi Skip, yes I have also watched you fly the route in the part 2 video. That’s really helpful because I watched exactly what you did. I will give that same route a try & then try a completely different route to see if I have grasped the procedure.Thank you. Martin
Skip thanks for your replies. I’m going through all online aviation channels to learn everything possible to learn to fly without paying a cent. I’m on Social Security and love aviation in general. Question, if I were to fly from home, KHUM to Charleston Executive, KJZI, how many VOR’s would you suggest to follow along they way? I would plan to make one rest & fuel stop halfway somewhere past Dothan, AL. Also, if flying an LSA at 8000’ aren’t I clear over all airports along the way?
Hi DAM8658, Wow, this is quite a flight if you are new to flying, especially flying a Light Sport Aircraft! If you are planning to just use VOR's you will most likely have to use every one you can find and at times you will most likely be out of range between VOR's and have to fly headings until you can pick up your next VOR. As for altitude you need to be sure you are at least 1000ft above any obstacles and since you will be flying headings between 000 and 179 you should fly at odd one thousands. This means, if you are over 3000 feet above the surface, you must fly odd thousands of feet (3,500, 5,500, 7,500 etc) So you should fly 7500ft or 9,500ft for your plan If you are going to try and fly this under real life conditions you should check the air space for all the airports you will fly over. However you could just contact the tower and ask for permission to transition their air space and since you are in a simulator you can give yourself permission :-) For example you must deal with New Orleans Airport as your flight path goes right through their airspace. Are you familiar with SkyVector.com? If you look at the airport in SkyVector (or if you have a sectional chart) you can see you must be below 4000ft or above 7000 if you want to avoid their airspace in your flight plan. If you go to SkyVector and enter your flight plan it will look like this: "SAFES V198 ROMMY V240 SJI V20 MVC V70 OCONE V154 SAV V437 JACKE" and will show you your route. The "names" such as SAFES are fixes used with GPS and V198 etc. are Victor Airways to follow. you will have to search for each fix to see it's location in your flight plan then you can locate a VOR close by if possible. I suggest you look at this flight plan with the fixes and select VOR's that are close to the route you want to take. This looks like a lot of fun and a nice challenge so good luck, let me know how it goes. Got to love Social Security, been on it for almost 10 years now. Happy Flying :-) Blessings, skip
Hi Brain, Thanks, glad you liked the video. The "pop-up" instruments are add-ons from two different companies for building custom panels on a second monitor - www.siminnovations.com and www.simplugins.com/html/panel_builder.html They work pretty well especially if you just want to see scenery on the main monitor without the airplane's instrument panel. Hi pgreenx, The 108.4 frequency is for the Comm radio which we use to contact and talk with the air traffic controller in the tower and communicate with other traffic, this is for communication. The 108.7 is for the Nav radio. You don't talk or communicate on this frequency it is just used for navigation such as flying to a VOR or using the ILS system to land. The Nav radio just receives a signal from the VOR or ILS and displays information in the VOR indicator. Here is a link to all my Navigation videos that might help you, ua-cam.com/play/PLjqSrWIZDAi9S9ds3QbfiTkjGAmE6b7IG.html Hope this helps, let me know. Blessings, skip
@@WEHVideos hi and thank you. Can you recommend a “pilot training course(s)” for a sim-only noob pilot? I’d like to learn the right way but don’t think I need to pay a full/high tuition for someone who will actually fly a real plane.
Hi pgreenx, I don't know of any off hand sorry. I have a series that takes you through almost everything you need for a sim pilot. I cover everything a sim pilot would need to know in most cases depending on what your looking for. My series based on what I've been doing while taking flying lessons in a Cessna 172N. The Cessna 172 is probably the most popular airplane for learning to fly in real life, it's a very easy and forgiving, a pretty tough little airplane. I don't think you need to spend money if you just plan to fly a sim, there is a lot of really good videos on UA-cam that can help you for free. Take a look at my series and see if this is what you want by clicking the links below, start with the introduction and if you want I also offer a free Cessna 172N given to me by X-Hanger.com that I use in almost all my videos so you can follow along in the same airplane, you can find out how to download the 172N in the first video in the series. So check these out and know I'm here to help with anything if I can. ua-cam.com/play/PLjqSrWIZDAi8IsbmFdGfJBVJ7jYSxAt26.html You should know I'm not a flight instructor or do I have a PPL yet I'm a student pilot with about 65 hours in a 172N flying out of Redding CA. and these videos are based on what I have learned as I work on mp PPL. Let me know how you are doing :-) Blessings, skip
Hi, could you tell me which airplane you use with those normal radio stack instead of that useless GPS with ridiculous miniature numbers display? I refer to x plane 11. Thanks a lot.
Hi Anderson GS, Well you are in luck just a few days go X-Hanger gave me the rights to their Cessna 172N and have allowed me to give it away to anyone who would like to use it for following along in my videos. Just started with x-plane (at 92 yo) and having a problem. It seems after taking off the speed changes and we crash. Using a new Dell 5 computer with Logitech extreme 3d pro (2d one). Any help on why this happens. Appreciate any help.
Hi Bill, Welcome to the wonderful world of X-Plane :-) I'm going to need more information before I'm able to attempt to help. First, what airplane are you trying to fly? Have you read the Manual so you know what speed is needed for takeoff. Have you setup the airplane correctly for takeoff, are flaps necessarily? Give me as much information as you can about what you are doing and maybe I can help. Since you are just starting I suggest using a "not so hard" airplane to fly such as the Cessna 172SP that comes with XP or the 172N I use in most of my videos. If you are interested, X-Hanger has given me the rights to their Cessna 172N, the airplane I use in most of my videos, and have allowed me to give it away to anyone who would like to use it for following along in my videos. You can learn how to download it by watching the video in the link below: ua-cam.com/video/mmOxFBkgEBE/v-deo.html 92!! That's Great :-) Blessings, skip
@@WEHVideos hI Skip, and thanks so much for replying, even though i realize not, I was not responding to your video. Anyway for additional info: I am not using any other plane than the Cessana 172 - like it a lot. I recently purchased a new desktop - Dell 5 which is a low end gamer, but a lot faster than my old old Acer. I originally thought the problem was the joystick. I purchased an older Logitech Extreme pro 3d, which just turned left as soon as I released the brakes on the keyboard. There was a sale on Amazon so I purchased another Logitech - a lot newer, and noticed the throttle had more resistance than the first joystick. Anyway I finallymanaged to get the plane into the air, but shortly after - and I touched nothing - the speed changed drastically both faster and slower and the plane crashed - but I emerged without a scratch - LOL. One thng I did was move all the x-plane files to the Radeon gaming location, but I do not know if that is a good idea. I did try and get some info from the forum without any success. I do not want to invest in a yoke at 92 yo, but I really do not know what the problem could be. If you could provide any insight in either setting up or moving x-pamce back to the desktop, or anything I could try, I would really appreciate it. Right now I spend most of my time either on a walker when I go out, usually to the VA, or a wheel chair when inside, Again anything that you might know that I could try would be appreciated. Thanks again for your speedy and kind response. Bill
Hi Bill, Ok let's look at the frame rate. Go to settings and click "Data Output" you will see a bunch of check boxes. On the first row you should see "Frame rate" across from that some check boxes. Under "Show in Cockpit" check the first box under that. Now when you run X Plane you should see your frame rate displayed in a little window in the upper left corner of your screen. Keep and eye on that as you fly to see if anything you do effects that rate. You should have an absolute minimum of 20fps. hopefully you have over 30fps which should be fine, not the best but good enough. Second. make sure your joystick is calibrated. On the Settings main page find "joystick" and should see an option "Calibrate" go ahead and calibrate all your controls again. Not sure if were you put X Plane makes a difference but I'd put it on the Desktop, just Cut and Paste the XP folder to the desktop. You will need to make another shortcut to that location. I'd also run the X Plane installer again to make sure you are up to date and files are not missing. That's all I can think of for now, give these suggestions a try and let me know if it helped. 92 & Veteran!! Thank you for your Service, where did you serve? Blessings, skip
@@WEHVideos Hi Skip, Thanks again for speedy response. I usually go to the VA a couple of times a week so I do not always geton line. First re x-olane. My frame rate unfortunately is 23+ I have calibrated my joystick many times. It seems that I have to reverse the throttle. I will move the files back to the desktop and redownload, but I do not think that is the problem since so many others are flying fine. As far as my military career I joined the army at 19 in January 1948. Took 16 weeks of basic and then leadership course, and after a few assignments the same year was shipped over to occupied Japan. That was a great assignment until the Korean war started. I was part of MacArthur's commuication unit, and on a Sunday one message came in that the North Koreans crossed the 38th parallel and the troops there were heading south. Gen Mac said "Get me communications", so they woke us up that night, broke us into two teams and off we went. The other team was wiped out giving us the first purple heart and the first 30 killed. After about a year and a half I was finally sent back to the states, and after another year or so was sent to the Military Mission in Greece. After that it was the pentagon, back overseas to Turkey, back to Ft Bragg and back overseas to Paris. Back to the states and then two tours in Nam where I was exposed to agent orange and now have a form of cancer recently discovered only a year ago. I left the service on January 31, 1968 with 20 years, worked 17 in a communications ompany and finally retired at age 58. Did a lot of travelling since revisiting Europe and Asia. My sports were skiing (expert) and tennis (not that good). Taught spreadsheets and computers in a computer club for many years, but now nothing. So just hanging around I figured I wanted to fly - something that almost happned for real in Ft Bragg, except I was sent to France and missed the change, so not simulation is what I want to do since I have a lot of spare time. I am also rethinking something I did as a kid - magic, and haunt UA-cam picking up new and old tricks with cards. Not there yet but am trying. It is nice that you take the time to prepare and post these videos. They are very informative to us. I would like to have a yoke, but at 92 how much do I want to spend for a hobby that will not last too long? But I will keep trying to get x-plane working for me. Nice chatting with you. If you feel I am taking up too much space on your site, you can always email me - bill.sheff@gmail.com and I will respond in kind. Regards, nice chatting and sharing some of my past - there is a lot thrown into the 20 years which would probably fill a book, and a friend of mine suggested I write. I did send some info to the new army museum, and they said they accepted it. All in all my military career was varied. I started out as a private and ended up as a Chief Warrant Officer in a very interesting field. Chow Bill
Hi Bill, 23 fps is not to hot but I don't thing that should cause the problems you describe. I didn't mention the Graphic in settings before so go to Settings and under Graphic move the top four slicers all the way to the left and then check your frame rate. If the rate improves a lot you can start moving them back to the right. I'm guessing the Visual Effect will have the most effect on frame rate you need a really good graphics card to run XP with these sliders farther left. I'd like to see a frame rate above 30fps. I have to say if you want to get the most enjoyment out of computer flying you really need good equipment. Here's a link to my suggestions: ua-cam.com/video/9SiJwp9NvlU/v-deo.html I realize this can be a bit expensive but the more realistic you can make it the easier it will be to fly eliminating a lot of the frustration hence more fun. Wow what a carrier you had, way too exciting for my liking. I did three tours in Vietnam from 1964-1966 patrolling the coast along with Swift boats and Coast Guard Cutters, I was on a small destroyer escort, spend a few days going up to Saigon when General Westmoreland took over. Seems we have a bit in common, I just found out this week that I also was exposed to agent orange, not really sure what to do with this knowledge I'll do some research I guess. When you rerun the XP installer it will just look for missing or damaged files and of course update to the latest version, I hope this will help. Let me know if adjusting the graphic helps any. If not probably looking at a new computer. Blessings, skip

This could be a good video except for the pointer - this is most disturbing (makes me dizzy) you are not the only person that does this I used prof. speakers and they loved the red dots. Most of the feed back I would get was about the circles made by the pointer. Way not move the pointer to the item you want to talk about and keep it still until moving to another item.
Hi Mulberry2000, Sorry to hear that. Can you be more specific as to how I didn't explain how to work buttons? There is only one button on the Comm and Nav radios and that's when there are is a standby frequency and you have a flip flop button to switch from standby to active as I explained in the beginning. Again, sorry I didn't explain that too well. Blessings, skip

If you haven't watched my series on VOR to VOR navigation it might help you and it's a pretty short flight so you can try it out if you like, should take 90 minutes or so to fly, probably not quiet that long. check it out here:
ua-cam.com/video/qoGHzQWbsXs/v-deo.html
Hope this helps and hope you give your flight a try without Direct To. I really don't like using auto pilot in the simulator I feel like I'm watching TV.
Don't give up! Good Luck,

Hope this helped :-)
Oh, if you don't have a POH you can download a pdf version off the internet just search for your airplane's POH.

(i.e: altitude density etc.)
Your offer for the yoke is interesting but like I said I live in Quebec city in Canada and I think you must be from USA.
Let me know how we could resolve that.

I have so much trouble tuning radios with a mouse, I've given up on sims. Besides getting realism hardware, is there an easy method of tuning radios?

@@WEHVideos That you for these great tips.
Hi Skip, I hope you are keeping well. I just have a few questions if thats ok. Is this correct:
Active: Comm 1 = Depart Airport Tower
Stby: Comm 1= Dest Airport Tower
Active: Comm 2 = Dest ATIS
Active: Nav 1 = VOR Freq
Stby: Nav 1 = LOC Freq
Also, what happens if an airport (small one) does not have A VOR or ATIS ? What do you enter instead ?
I have notice that large airports have all freq for towers, ATIS, VOR and LOC but some smaller airports dont. What do you enter if they dont.
For example Biggin Hill (EGKB) Airport Communications are:
BIGGIN HILL Approach: 129.40
BIGGIN HILL ATIS: 135.67
BIGGIN HILL Tower: 134.80
How would i enter the above freq's to arrive safely. I am just trying to get my head around this 😫
Many thanks
Martin
Here's an example:
Benton Field O85 (non-towered) to Redding Muni KRDD (towered)
Comm 1 set for Benton Unicom Freq. 122.8 _ Standby Freq. set to Redding Tower 119.8
(be ready to enter Redding Ground121.7 into Standby for Comm 1 after 119.8 is active)
Comm 2 O85 ATIS (if available) _ Standby Freq. Redding Muni ATIS 124.1
The flight looks like this after you set the radios:
First get Comm 2 ATIS for Benton Field then flip the standby frequency 124.1 to active so you are ready when it's time to get Redding Muni ATIS
Second use Comm 1 Unicom for Benton 122.8 to announce your intentions for departure.
Third After your departure from Benton flip Comm 1 standby frequency 119.8 to active so you are ready to contact the tower and now enter Redding Ground 121.7 in Standby
Fourth listen to Redding Muni ATIS
Fifth Contact Redding Tower 119.8 and tell them your intentions. The tower call goes something like this:
Redding Tower, Skyhawk 84DL at 2000ft over Sundial Bridge inbound to land with Xray (or current ATIS) then follow the instructions from the tower.

Sounds Good :-)
Skip thanks for your replies.
This means, if you are over 3000 feet above the surface, you must fly odd thousands of feet (3,500, 5,500, 7,500 etc) So you should fly 7500ft or 9,500ft for your plan
If you are going to try and fly this under real life conditions you should check the air space for all the airports you will fly over.
Happy Flying :-)

Awesome video thumbs up , Hi dear , I have a question, how could you manage pop out the radio stack? Thanks
Hi Brain, Thanks, glad you liked the video. The "pop-up" instruments are add-ons from two different companies for building custom panels on a second monitor - www.siminnovations.com and www.simplugins.com/html/panel_builder.html
They work pretty well especially if you just want to see scenery on the main monitor without the airplane's instrument panel.

Just curious why the localizer and VOR feqencies were slightly off 108.4 vs 108.7? Thanks
Here is a link to all my Navigation videos that might help you, ua-cam.com/play/PLjqSrWIZDAi9S9ds3QbfiTkjGAmE6b7IG.html

@@WEHVideos Hi Skip,
Thanks again for speedy response.

Bill
Hi Bill, 23 fps is not to hot but I don't thing that should cause the problems you describe. I didn't mention the Graphic in settings before so go to Settings and under Graphic move the top four slicers all the way to the left and then check your frame rate. If the rate improves a lot you can start moving them back to the right. I'm guessing the Visual Effect will have the most effect on frame rate you need a really good graphics card to run XP with these sliders farther left. I'd like to see a frame rate above 30fps.
I have to say if you want to get the most enjoyment out of computer flying you really need good equipment. Here's a link to my suggestions:

I realize this can be a bit expensive but the more realistic you can make it the easier it will be to fly eliminating a lot of the frustration hence more fun.

Does anybody know which plane this is?
Hi John, Thanks for watching :-) This airplane is from X-Hanger but not available anymore there. They gave me the rights to the airplane to give away so if you want this airplane you can get it for free after watching this video here: ua-cam.com/video/mmOxFBkgEBE/v-deo.html
Be sure to visit X Hanger for other aircraft.

@@WEHVideos Great, how do you get the instruments to pop out, this would be great to drag to a second monitor for better instrument visual.
Hi John, I use two different programs for instruments links below. Each has really good and not so good features so I have both. Might want to watch a couple videos on each one to see which one you prefer, or just get them both :-)

Hi Earl, Thanks for the feedback I'll work on that.

useless because u do not show HOW TO WORK THE BUTTONS
Hi Mulberry2000, Sorry to hear that. Can you be more specific as to how I didn't explain how to work buttons? There is only one button on the Comm and Nav radios and that's when there are is a standby frequency and you have a flip flop button to switch from standby to active as I explained in the beginning. Again, sorry I didn't explain that too well.
