  • Learn five of the most common functions of the Garmin GNS430 GPS unit using X-Plane 11. Make the most out of your flight simulator experience or use the flight simulator to practice as a student pilot or beyond. Note that while the features of this unit in X-Plane closely mimic those of the real unit, there are some differences. This tutorial should be used for X-Plane purposes only. However, gaining a familiarity with this system will likely aid in your transition to units in the airplane.
    In this video you will learn how to do the following on the X-Plane GNS430GPS unit:
    1. Tune the Com/Nav radio frequencies
    2. View a moving map of the area
    3. Navigate to an airport using the airport code
    4. Look up airport information like runway numbers and length
    5. Find and navigate to the nearest airports to your position

    Absolutely fantastic video. I have just bought X-Plane 11 and watched a few tutorials about navigation, but none of them had the Garmin GNS430 in them (I think they were a few years old, hell they may even have been FSX). So When I went to the runway and saw the Garmin GNS430 I was absolutely baffled. Punched a few buttons at random but really didn't have a clue what I was doing. Many thanks for demystifying the unit - I feel confident about playing with it now to figure out all the different functions. Good work mate.

    Thanks for making just what I was looking for! I've been simming for uh... about a week with X-Plane 10 and your autopilot video that led me here instantly allowed me to have level flight so I could actually do some learning worry-free. It appears the amount one could know it almost infinite so, this looks like the perfect place to be. Thanks again for your fabulous, clear and helpful vids.

    Tip...I use a hotkey to open larger 430 screen. Also the mouse wheel will scroll thru the com1 three digit frequencies quicker. I just hover over one side of dial and move mouse wheel forwards and back. Takes forever if you just click. Thanks for the videos.

    Hi Clay! Great tutorial! And I'm not saying that just because your name is Clay! LOL. I was wondering, at the beginning of your video, you mentioned the ATIS frequency. Can you find the ATIS frequency in X-Plane 11 or do you have to find those frequencies from an outside source?

    It would be nice to see this done with the newer s-tek like auto pilot in v11.30 and forward as it operates radically differently then the 430 (Its mode based ratehr then button activated for example and CWS is not standard)

    I know your video doesn't cover this particular page, but does your X Plane GNS430/530 show anything in the Airport Frequency Page? Mine is blank. It seems like I've seen airport frequencies (ATIS, Ground, Tower, etc) populated on other X Plane videos but my airport frequencies page is blank (fresh X Plane 11 installation two weeks ago.) Any help appreciated!

    Great presentation - I'm new to X-Plane, how do you get ATIS audio activated? I turned up all audio in settings but hear nothing. Is ATIS a plugin for X-Plane?

    • @clayviation
      @clayviation  5 років тому

      Thanks, Mark. The easiest way to get ATIS going is to tune it in to the local ATIS frequency. You’ll need to look that up on a sectional chart like ForeFlight or SkyVector (free). Another approach to the ATC system can be found here:

    Knee jerk question after watching the video. If I'm flying VFR and I want to fly to a check-in point to let the tower know where I am and my intentions, can that be done by entering letters or would I need to find the Lat/Long and enter it that way?

    • @clayviation
      @clayviation  4 роки тому

      Hey Lawson! I’ve never actually entered lat/lon for a fix. GPS databases have a plethora of useful waypoints in the database. Thanks for watching!

    • @ElbertPoling
      @ElbertPoling 4 роки тому

      @@clayviation I think I figured it out. It's been a while since I've flown and when I was flying I never had the opportunity to use items like a modern GPS. ANYway, the pennants you see on a VFR terminal area chart have an underlined name adjacent to them. After reviewing one of these charts it seems to me that the underlined text is what would be entered into the GPS as a way point so one can fly to that location prior to contacting the tower to report location and intentions.

    • @clayviation
      @clayviation  4 роки тому

      Ah, now I understand what you were asking, and yes, great job discovering that! You would enter the five character identifier under the VFR checkpoint in your gps to help navigate to it. You would refer to it’s name “(not the code) to ATC when referring to it. Great work!

  • @nickeberhard2798
    @nickeberhard2798 5 років тому

    Does anyone knows, how to turn of the dialog (just the text) from atc or atis?
    Thanks!

  • @PSVF2013

    Using the GPS with VLOC selected??????? From time 00:00 untill 15:44? Can you explain that? Where do you think you were navigating to?
    And it's not necessary to delete the first waypoint. You just have to put the cursor over the new one, open "MENU" and "ACTIVATE LEG".

    • @clayviation
      @clayviation  4 роки тому

      Hi Pedro - that’s a great observation. The vloc and gps key toggles what your course deviation indicator is pulling data from. In VLOC mode, your radio VOR information is being shown on the CDI, and in GPS mode, your GPS data is being displayed. For the purposes of exploring the functions of the gps unit in this discussion, the CDI was really behind the scope of the discussion.

    On the Garmin GNS430 I can't get the the autopilot to follow the flight plan. The first issue I have is when I set the CDI to GPS and Nav on the autopilot, the GNS430 stays on "Term" mode and never switches to "ENR". I've used the GNS430 on other airplanes that I fly with X-Plane 11 and never have any issues. HELP and can't get Airfoils to respond. Thanks.

    • @clayviation
      @clayviation  6 років тому

      Maybe someone here has had the same problem. I can’t think off the top of my head what could cause that. There are a few nuances of the sim tech that differs from the real thing - I wonder if that is why you are experiencing a difference.
