Hey guys and welcome back to Mad About Skin where in this video we are talking The Ordinary Retinal 0.2% Emulsion and working out whether this is the ultimate retinal serum when it comes to anti ageing skincare.
Retinal is more potent than retinol and it often gives you great anti-ageing results with less irritation. With the ordinary skincare entering the retinal market I thought we would take a look at the ordinary retinal serum and work out whether there is a place for it in our skincare routine,

I thought that 0.5 was higher
Hey! Saw a lot of comments regarding k secret actual concentration. Can you please clarify if it is actually the equivalent of boj instead of the ordinary? I saw someone in the comments that want to move up from g&g 1 to k secret, but this might be a “move down”. I myself just ordered the k secret one because i wanted a higher concentration than the g&g a game. So, how is it in the end? Am i going down or up with this serum? Would really appreciate a clarification from you 🙏
Did some more research and found k secret giving this description for the retinal serum:
“Formulated with 2% Retinal Liposome (0.02% Pure Retinal) and Black Ginseng, this serum promotes a youthful, radiant complexion, addressing skin texture, hydration, and the reduction of wrinkles.”
So, it’s the equivalent of boj, not the ordinary 😊

I love this stuff! I lather the Ordinary's most rich moisturizer on after and haven't had any dryness. My skin looks so much better at 51 than it did in my twenties. Not one wrinkle and no more acne!
Was it the Ordinary Retinol that you bought? Did you use it every night? If so did the 15ml tube last you a full month or would you recommend buying two tubes?
@@_Laura_Marie I find the Ordinary's version the best. I use Avene's as well since I paid a lot for it and still have some, but the Ordinary's seems better to me. A little goes a long way !
It seems that the Ordinary saw the success of G&G retinal at 0.1 strength and by releasing this they are going to take all of us who wished for a stronger formulation but with the similar texture/application. Already ordered this, hopefully it will give better results as my skin got used to G&G and plateaued
I think you might be right and it is nice to have a higher strength option.. let me know your thoughts when you have tried it.. love x
Will order it when my G&G is finished. Same problem (?) - it is nice, but i have the feeling something is missing. Maybe the ordinary one will help better with my acne, without having to get a prescription.

Very good review. I love the new retinal from The Ordinary, I’m using it every second night as I’m a seasoned retinol user and I am loving the results. I think The Ordinary have been very late bringing this to market and I also think they will see how it performs sales wise and then produce a larger size.

Ive been using the 2% Crystal Retinal from Medik8 at night and love love love it…zero sensitization and great results. Paired with the medik8 super C ferrulic in the morning and my peptides my skin is in the best shape its ever been.

I just bought it. I have used retinols from the Ordinary before. And the hydrating moisturizer. I also ordered a cleanser and am thinking about ordering one of the toners as well. I will definitely use an oil and/ or a moisturizer after the emulsion

Hi Rob! Love your channel and all your great reviews! I have been using Tret for 8 years. I started at the 0.05 % and over time have moved to the 0.1% every night. I have no irritation at all anymore because I worked up slowly. I use a lot of The Ordinary products and I’m wondering if this product would be an improvement/upgrade to what I’m currently using, in terms of potency and anti aging. I’m 58 years old and my skin is very youthful looking, so I’m lucky, but I also know that prolonged use of Tret has definitely been the key. Would you recommend switching over to this new product and dropping the Tret? I value your opinion and expertise! ❤ from New Hampshire, USA

I was initially disappointed about the size of the retinal container but when you compare it to the Avene and the medik8 I think I’ll definitely try it. But yes I hope,they come out with the 30 ml to prevent packing waste. I’m currently using Naturium looking forward to jumping up in strength. 😀🇨🇦

Hi Rob, off topic but I have a question that maybe could be a future video. Have you tried, or do you have an opinion on Niod NEC? Do you think it has any special properties that can truly help with aging neck/jawline firmness, and if not, are there any products that do? I've been using it for years, but mainly in a "hope in a tube" kind of way, without any real knowledge whether these ingredients are doing what I'm hoping they're going to do. Anyway, thanks for considering! xx.

Thank you darling! As you said it makes no sense for them to bring out this strength only. As for it being 15ml what a waist of plastic packaging this is... The A-Game 10 maybe lower concentration, I still humbly think it is better value and as an Indie brand they do not have the financial backing of Estée Lauder...

Hey, Rob. I really like the Original products I've used. Probably wont try the new serum. I have a question for you, though. I'm really trying to find the highest over the counter strength in a retinal. I'm just at a standstill and I've tried so many. Any suggestions. I'm even using the VT Reedle shot. Nothing. I think I'll up it to the 300. Anyway, I'd love any suggestions you may have.

For the ppl in the EU: I recently discovered the brand „missalice“. They are based in Slovenia and offer a Retinal in 3 different strengths (0.05, 0.15 and 0.2 which would be comparable to the Ordinary strength). Prices are a lil higher than the Ordinary but still very affordable. Formula looks very good. Has anyone tried them? Ive only tried a Vitamin C Serum from them and like it so far!

This would be great for me. I'm already using A313 which took some time to get used to but nothing Pyunkang Yul products can't help with.
I used the geek & gorgeous retinal and avene. It is very sensitizing for my skin. I am now using Medik 8 retinal and i'm loving it. Thank you for upur recommendation Rob. Of all the retinal i've tried this one doesn't trigger my sensitivity. Though very pricey. I would like to see K secret retinal after i finish my medik 8. Kindly do review on k secret.
I love the medik8 one as its encapsulated so way more gentle but your right the price point is a little much lol.. love x

👍I was hoping they would have multiple strengths, but am very interested in trying the 0.2%. I use G&G 0.1% currently. I am excited to have an additional strength before trying tretinoin. I have dry/dehydrated mature skin and rosacea which can increase my sensitivity to skincare ingredients, or not, because it rarely makes sense and I have to this that formulation is the key.
I really hope they will have other strengths in the coming months x
Happy The Ordinary launched Retinal but I've just jumped to Tretinon. However, only using Tret twice a week. 🤔 I think I'll have to buy the Retinal for the additional days. 😊

Can’t wait to try it. I am a bit bummed out that it’s only 15ml for $15. So I have to buy two if I want a standard 1fl ounce for $30. I’ll try it for sure but I might still stick with my Naturium retinal 0.1 for $32 and for 50ml/1.7 fl ounces.

Just a word of caution; Regarding the Seol 1988 alternative, if you look at the ingredients, retinal is very far down in the ingredient list (like the 20th+), so it’s very unlikely it’s 2%retinal (it’s most likely 2%complex). All the formulas with 2%retinal list retinal as the 5th -10th ingredient (at most! Sometimes it’s listed as the 2nd or 3rd ingredient,for a 20% retinal formulation). All the bests!!!
Yesss, it appears the Seoul 1988 serum is 0.02% retinal.

Thanks for another great video ❤ Is the K-secret really 0,2 % retinal like The Ordinary? I’m wondering because of it’s lipsome base for an example the revive eye serum from BOJ has 2 % lipsome complex and the pecentage is 0,02 % I’m a bit confused 😅
Yes, it appears to be a low strengh formula just like the BOJ eye serum, so not "the same strengh as The Ordinary".

I think I would have been very interested in this about a year ago, although the tiny size would have given me a lot of pause. What a bizarre choice. A year ago, I was not feeling very impressed with my results from my first tube of Naturium 0.05% retinal. I probably would have gone to their 0.1% retinal and then looked forward to upgrading to this product from the Ordinary (if it had been out at the time). But instead I started getting more acne and ended up on Differin. Now that I know how well my super sensitive skin tolerates adapalene, I don’t see myself using any retinal/retinol products in the future. My derm might give me an Rx for 0.3% adapalene this week, which I’m excited to try. From there, if I still feel like I need an upgrade, I’ll switch to tretinoin. But because I tolerate adapalene so well, I may stick with that forever!

So back in January of this year, The Ordinary sent out an email stating they were discontinuing some products to make way for new ones. The Granactive Retinoid Emulsion 2% in Squalane was one of the products they got rid of, and this retinal serum is what I believe took its place. I do think they should’ve brought this out in the standard 30ml size and not a 15ml pump. The brand as a whole is ok, but in my opinion they could do better. For one, they have consistently every January for the last 3 years raised their prices. So for them to come out with a replacement product that is half the size of the one they discontinued is kind of snarky. Having said that, I still use some of their products and love the ones I have and look forward to trying this one out.
Following your advise I switched to AGame 10. Prior to that, I used A Passioni. And when I empty my AGame 10 I will switch to Ksecret. Unfortunately Douglas und Cult Beauty haven’t added the Ordinary to its stock. Keep up with your great content ❤

KSecret only has 0.02 % Retinal compared to 0.1 % in A-Game 10.
I’m confused about the percentage of the Seoul 1988 one - it says it’s 2% not .2% and I’ve read that it’s a mixture so it’s actually very mild and has an actual retinal percentage of less than 1% - the beauty of joseon retinal eye cream is also listed at 2% but they say that it’s a mixture and is less than 1% actual retinal so that it is safe around the eyes :/

Ooo I wondered if you’d discovered the K-Secret Retinal yet, I didn’t realise it was so strong. I managed to get my hands on the snail + rice water but haven’t tried it yet as I also got the Mizon snail essence which I’ve opened first. It’s so much nicer than the Cosrx IMO, not shiny! I don’t think I’m tempted by TO, I think I’d rather stick with low strength tretinoin. Thanks for giving us an honest review and comparison so we can weigh up and work out what’s best for us. ❤

Its small but if you want to try it then better to start with a smaller cheaper size. Also, you're supposed to start slow so a smaller package may encourage that. And it won't go bad before you use it up
I think this is a good point and I think a lot of people will use it every other night because of the strength so the size wont be a huge issue x

@@MadAboutSkin bought the medik8 retinal face and eye cream in 0.3. It's much less irritating than the retinol I was using from l'oréal. I've got fair skin which is quite sensitive so steady is the only way for me.

Maelove often is sold out on products. Their products are good, but frustrating I can't get my hands on what I want.

Robert, thank you for this video. But I doubt that The ordinary has the same incapsulated retinal technology as Medik8. Despite I have sensitive skin I don't have any irritation at all with Medik8 crystal retinal. I have also tried Avene Physiolift night retinal cream and although it has lesser amount of retinal in comparison with Medik8 I coudn't use it every day. What do you think about it?
It is encapsulated
Use a ton of moisturizer after and during the morning with other skin care and your skin will be fine. It's much better than the Avene RetinAL in my opinion and I'd rather have it smaller. You only need a pea size and I'd rather buy a new bottle fresh. I've had so many products go bad because I didn't use them quickly enough.

@@Mari-cz7fd the tube is so small that I feel it was too early to notice a difference after finishing it less than a month later. I now use the one from youth to the people (0.15%), and I am definitely noticing a difference now. I think it would take two tubes of product to start noticing a difference.

Hi Rob. I found that K-Secret liposome retinal during my Yesstyle stalking (I absolutely scour and go deep on that site 😂). I knew 2% complex didn’t mean 2% pure retinaldehyde, but couldn’t find that info anywhere. I asked them on Amazon and the seller (KSecret Official, so I assume that is actually the brand) said it’s 0.02% retinaldehyde. That concentration is much more in line with what I’d expect from a Korean brand. If you have a direct channel to them, you might want to double check/confirm the 0.2% concentration you reference. Great info! I was wondering if it really was 0.2 % pure Retinal, did sound to good to be true for that price point.
Wait.. then the beauty of joseons retinal eye cream doesn't contain 0.02% retinal.. because it's liposomes? 🤔
@@elin_ The BoJ Eye Cream has 0.02 % Retinal, the serum from Ordinary has 10 times as much.
@kristinjohansson9031 I know its far from the same amount in them.. but I was talking about retinal liposomes.. like both the k-secret and BoJ has. If the K-secret one has lower amount than what they claim because it's liposomes, then the BoJ retinal eye cream is much weaker than what I originally thought. I thought it had 0.02% retinal, but since it's liposomes, then it must be much weaker than that.
BOJ eye cream is 0.02% retinaldehyde, as far as I know. So is the KSecret serum, according to their answer on Amazon. 0.02% is enough to do something over time, but it is very gentle. I have unbelievably sensitive/reactive skin, and even I tolerate 0.05% retinal basically nightly.
Just got mine in the mail. Do you keep yours in the fridge? I keep my retinol 1% in squalane in the fridge, it says to do so on the packaging. Nowhere on the retinal does it say to, but im wondering if i should anyway
I am skeptical if its really that well priced when you only get 15ml of product. Or maybe its just me being poor.. It's not very environmentally conscious to make such small bottles though.. But yeah.. I'll probably try it sometime, because Im curious. How is the spreadability? I always tend to use too much of my G&G a-game.

Interesting product! However I feel like we've always been taught that stronger doesn't necessarily equal better in skincare, so I guess people will have very different experiences abd opinions :)

I hope this rental is good i love the ordinary i bey loads of products from there ive been using geek and gorgeous agame 10 it would be better if i could bey every thing i need in one place getting thing from different companies can be a pain they arrive on different days

I’ve been using the Geek & Gorgeous .1% retinal, and I’m psyched to graduate to .2% from the Ordinary. We’ll see what happens.

I’m not sure….sensitive skin here, I’m using the Medik8 Crystal Retinal 1, this is dermatologist recommendation, this maybe too irritating for my skin, but keen to follow results of others with similar skin types, this product isn’t encapsulated I believe? After watching this review I think it’s a no for my skin.
