    It was a pleasure having you here Greg! I also did a video on you visiting us, if anyone is interested in an extended video of his tour of our place, I just put it live on our channel. Much love for all the work you do! Keith, CPL on UA-cam. Just some personal notes on my pond, coming from the owner (me)...
    The planting is very much a "wild style", which is entirely intended. I know if may not be everyone's cup of tea, but every single plant selection here wasn't chosen because it's pretty, or clean, it is chosen because it supports various local native insects. We also plant in a way that "maximizes photosynthesis" which maximizes plant-root-exudates, which maximizes soil food web health and fertility building. We're big on the science of ecology robustness here, and every choice is taken to maximize the benefit to nature.
    That strategy means that some things can look "overgrown". In fact, I did a lot of "clean up" prior to the visit, whereas I usually keep it even wilder than this. However, because of this, we've reintroduced hundreds of new species of butterflies, moths, and other insects back into our land, which was previously a sprayed orchard/farmland. We're rebuilding nature and showing how humans can be true stewards of nature, and not just landscaping it for beauty. I personally find this method even more beautiful, and I hope you do as well. :)
    The last thing I wanted to mention, is that even ALL the plants are either edible or medicinal, whether that's the yarrow that brings in green lacewings, or valerian to bring in hoverflies who feast upon aphids and cabbage worms. We have thousands of herbaceous beneficial plants. We plant serviceberries and elderberries specifically for various bird species, etc. We've been rewarded with years of nature shots of animals using our land along side us, as we fill our freezers with healthy nutritious food, in harmony with feeding them also.
    I hope this helps explain some of the choices made on this site, and maybe opens people up to another lens of landscaping.

      Dear Greg Wittstock, I am a big admirer of Keith's channel. I love your work, but I can't stand your video editing. You have these beautiful zen pools but you take us on a jolting cha-cha fun park trip. If you want some ideas for classy videos check out the weedy garden channel. Your aquascapes are really special so it's worth upgrading your videos so that the editing and camera angles enhance the calmness. I do like how you are checking out other pond builders'work and interviewing the owners and the builders at the same time. It's interesting hearing the challenges and initial design expectations of the clients.

    What is the water source for the pond? Is it safe to fill a recreational home pond with flood irrigation water?

    • @CanadianPermacultureLegacy
      @CanadianPermacultureLegacy 8 місяців тому +1

      Rainwater capture.
      As far as capturing runoff, that depends on where the runoff is coming from. Road? No. Shingled roof? I wouldn't. Farm field? Heck no. But water from a non sprayed natural wildflower hill/field? Absolutely.

      @@CanadianPermacultureLegacy Our flood irrigation water comes from a mountain reservoir and a spring fed, artificially, fish-stocked pond. I could have it tested to see if it picks up pesticides from lawns/fields as it comes into my property. It probably does, and yet it is intended for plant irrigation. I’m not sure about having my kids play in it since it definitely isn’t potable. Maybe it would be ok after the water in a water feature/pond is naturally treated with oxygenation and root microbes.

      We were going to run some tilapia as a self-sustainable food (protein) source, and source of omega-3 (to compliment our nut trees). However, I decided to go with koi at the advice of our builder (Joe), because they are river fish who would eat the algae off the rocks. So we prioritized a stable healthy pond ecology over an additional food source. However, one day we may try to swap into something like bass or tilapia.
