  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge fell into the waters of the Patapsco River after a Singapore-flagged container ship named Dali collided with a support column around 05:30 UTC, 1:30 a.m. local time, Tuesday.
Pilots of the cargo ship that crashed into a major bridge in the U.S. city of Baltimore, Maryland, issued a mayday call shortly before the structure collapsed into a river, enabling authorities to save lives, according to the state’s governor.
"We can confirm that the crew notified authorities of a power issue," Maryland Governor Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday morning, hours after the incident. Moore said the Singapore-flagged container ship Dali had no power before smashing into one of two main columns supporting the Francis Scott Key Bridge and causing the bridge to collapse.
Moore said the crew’s warning enabled transportation officials to quickly halt traffic along the interstate highway crossing over the bridge. "These people are heroes. They saved lives last night," the governor said. The ship’s crew also dropped its anchors in a futile attempt to avert the disaster.
Two of the workers were rescued, with one transported to a trauma center in serious condition, while the other was uninjured. Searchers were continuing to look for the other six, with divers facing bone-chilling water temperatures of about 9 degrees Celsius (48 Fahrenheit).
Video showed a large section of the bridge quickly collapsing into the river after the Dali collided with the support column. The vessel is 48 meters (157 feet) wide and 300 meters (984 feet) long and was loaded with cargo containers setting sail for Sri Lanka.

You could see a Tractor Trailer and a few cars cross over before the crash. The flashing lights were supposedly a Road Repair Crew working on the bridge. God help the injured and the families who lost loved ones.

Due to the ship's Mayday call, police were able to stop vehicles from going onto the bridge just before it came down. But they could not rescue the construction crew who were on the bridge filling in potholes. Two members of the crew were rescued but the other six are presumed dead.

When a vehicle accidentally falls into water, the situation can be very critical:
    1. Stay calm.
    2. Immediately unbuckle your seatbelt.
    3. Before water enters the vehicle, quickly open the windows or use a safety hammer (prepared in advance) or use the pointed end of a seat headrest to break the window.
    4. Do not attempt to open the door, as this will allow water to rush in faster.
    5. The window is the best escape route. If the window cannot be opened, wait until the water pressure equalizes before trying to open the door.
    6. Once the window is open, leave the vehicle immediately, helping children to escape first.
    7. After leaving the car, swim towards the surface immediately. If you lose your sense of direction, follow the bubbles.
    8. If escape is impossible, call for help if possible, or use the car's emergency system.
    9. At the same time, if it brings you comfort or focus, recite a personal prayer, mantra, or affirming words that resonate with your belief.

An expert on MSNBC just said that the collapse was much worse because the ship hit the support. Yah think? If it had gone under the center and didn’t hit the support, it would have just gone under like it’s supposed to. I’m no bridge expert, but am I missing something?

You know the news🙄 You are right about it going through without incident (if it had power to properly steer itself) as that is a main cargo channel. Due to the ship losing power it ended up drifting with quite a bit of momentum into the bridge support.

    • @briteidea08
      @briteidea08 Місяць тому +1

In the center of all bridges is a range. It’s basically lights that need to be lined up, for the center of the channel. So you may see one the bridge and one or two on shore. Once those are lined up. You’re in the center. If you’re a big ship like that and outside of the channel. The ship could possibly get pulled into the bridge by the mud or whatever else is there. There’s a little wiggle room. Something that big isn’t much.

Tugs got the vessel out of its berth, but it was in open water, steaming on its own power - until the power went out. There are a number of things that could have happened to cause the power to fail. With the power out, the ability to control the direction of the ship is extremely limited. At least one anchor was thrown - possibly both fore and aft, but they weren't enough to stop the momentum of the thing. There is only one screw engaged when this ship is in reverse - not enough to prevent the collision.

Francis Scott Key's manuscript in the Maryland Historical Society collection.
O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
'Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - "In God is our trust,"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

To all those impacted by this tragedy: Have faith in GOD! Just because the bridge workers haven't been found, it doesn't mean they're dead. Some could have washed up on shore somewhere, some could be floating on a piece of metal downstream. Remember that God can do anything, and nothing is over until it's over. Just like Jonah was in the belly of a fish three days, it's possible that some of these men could be found alive. My prayer is that everyone will be found safe and even if they're not, may they rest in the arms of Jesus and be loved (and cared for) forevermore. In Jesus Name. Amen ❤.

    • @pedrojpinto
      @pedrojpinto Місяць тому +12

You could just as easily attribute that to the ship losing power, the crew realizing they were unable to stop the ship's current turn towards the pylon, the power coming back up momentarily and the crew trying desperately to correct the ship's course as soon as they regained power, going full power in reverse, but it being already too late. Let's not presume terrorism if there's a perfectly plausible explanation for this being a terrible accident.

The DALI is an international shipping vessel, which was managed by singaporean company Synergy Marine Group. They were not hired by Americans. This is not to excuse this accident, the DALI did have a prior incident in Antwerp back in 2016, that was smaller in comparison to this. In this collision here in Baltimore, the ship lost power multiple times, thus causing the crash. Perhaps instead there is an issue with maintaining proper inspections to ensure all ships are up to grade, something that many companies in many countries are guilty of no matter the race nor creedance of the workers associated with them.

Or 2, you are state sponsored wumao who is assigned to connect with foreign media to spread state sponsored propaganda.
Don't get me wrong, the usa has its fair share of propaganda as well, but the citizens are allowed to call it out and go to other sources for information. There are no blankets hiding people who are disappeared, and there are no walling off sites for tragedies like floods and collapsed infrastructure. I'd listen if you could point the opposite out.
