Love your opening comments. I've been a cake decorator for thirty years. So many times I've been called on to "whip up" a cake for an office party, Boy Scout Eagle banquet, even a wedding. It took me a long time to realize that none of the other guests attending the event were bringing gifts worth the bakery price of my beautiful/labor-intensive/time-consuming cakes. Crafters of all mediums need to stop under-valuing themselves. Just because you CAN make something, doesn't mean you SHOULD make it. Save the heirlooms for those closest to us.
I've been asking people to provide the fabric of their choice. I invariably get it wrong, and they get to see how much work it is, and how expensive it is. I didn't do it for that reason, but...

I used this technique to make pillows from two of my dad’s shirts as a gift for my niece, Daddy’s only granddaughter, last Christmas. She cried and so did I. He passed away over three years ago. ❤️
Glad you addressed the subject. I used to work full time for a large engineering firm, until I lost my job to Covid. But I was amazed at how many people would want me to just make a quilt for somebody I didn’t know, and they’d pay me *insert nominal price, usually $100*. My eyes would usually glaze over. I don’t have a long arm machine, and I’m not comfortable quilting on my home machine because I never had time to practice (but I do now!). $100 doesn’t even pay for the fabric!
Been there! I make baby quilts and wedding quilts for people at church. Half of them never even send a thank-you, they don't know how much effort and expense goes in it.
I made my son a t-shirt quilt to take to college. There were 2 t-shirts leftover, so I sewed them in a checkerboard arrangement with 2 extra quilt blocks and made the back of the pillowcase from the last bit of the border fabric. It made a big pillow, about 24” square. I ordered a pillow form that size from Amazon and did just what you said about putting it inside. Now he has this really cool pillow to match his quilt and it is big enough to use as a backrest or an extra seat. He loves it and a lot of the other kids admire it. Keep coming up with these great ideas!
I am so glad that you made this video. I now know how to use my father's shirts to make memory pillows for the family. He passed away last year and this will be a perfect pattern to use to make the pillows. Thank you very much.
great video and so inspiring as usual. If your pillow cover ends up a bit too big and your stuffing/insert is too small and floppy, you can topstitch/sew another seam around (a half inch or more) all around from the sewn edge before you stuff it to make a "flange" and it actually looks quite nice.
love the video. my best friend died of cancer last year, and when we emptied her house we kept some of her favorite t shirts, including some she painted or printed herself (she was a painter and sculptor) so with another friend we thought of making quilted pillows with them to give to her loved ones. i will use the ideas from the video, thanks!
This is absolutely FANTASTIC! I think it will be a pillow Christmas...so many quilt styles I’d like to try but not for a full sized quilt - this is a great solution to using the “test drive” blocks!

My Mom always reminded me that once a gift is given, the receiver can (and will) do whatever they want with the gift. 💙 There are some people who should not be gifted a handmade quilt. For example, after gifting 4 personalized Christmas stockings (stuffed with gifts & candy) to my nephew's family, they tossed them in the trash. On FB they posted a Christmas Eve picture with the 4 stockings and Christmas Day of them in a kitchen trash bin along with paper and bows. Next Christmas, I mailed 4 duplicate gift cards in one card. They were chewed out on FB for complaining. The pillows are beautiful. 💙

I am going to teach a friend how to quilt/sew, and thanks to this video I suggested we could do pillows as a fun and quick first project! I am so excited! We get fabric this week!
My mother is a die hard, old time quilter. She quilts everything by hand once it has been pieced together using only old clothes and scraps. (she's a product of the depression) but this year for the great grand girls, she pieced together a quilt block, and is putting those onto pillows for Christmas. What a treasure to have!
I always love all your ideas . What you said about people thinking that a week before an event you can just whip up a queen size quilt with thousand pieces.Especially after they see one of my quilts that took me 4 -5 months to make and they want one in 7 days ! If I was Samatha from Bewitch I could lol
Karen Brown NEVER fails to bring such useful content! I have learned so much from her videos! I can't imagine how much work goes into producing so much golden content.
I've made book pillows for our preschool auction. It's definitely a great way to practice a new block. Thank you for the batting/ stuffing tip I have batting scraps I can use for that!
I have wanted to make one of those bookcase quilts, but making a pillow to practice is a great idea! Now I need to finish my rainbow one and get busy with a book pillow!
You can’t believe how timely this video is! My grandson is graduating from high school and I wanted to make something special for him, but I don’t want to do a t-shirt quilt. I thought of a pillow, but I’ve never made one. With your help I am going to attempt this. Thank you SO much!!!
Another great video! Glad you said the "quiltworthy" thing out loud. I love to quilt but work a lot of hours during the week. Perfect alternative to a full quilt or to give with a quilt as a coordinated extra! Also somewhere (and it may have been on another of your videos in the comment section?) I saw a comment about using the pillow case as a gift wrap for the pillow. If it is a throw sized quilt, kind of like a quillow w/o being a quillow!! Great for guest rooms or keeping a quilt tucked away on a couch.
Thanks so much... I so appreciated your comment about quilt worthy- confusing enthusiasm with ease.... adding time and cost too! But a pillow, everyone almost makes that type of ‘.... worthy’ Your videos are so good, informative and fun! I can tell you think us all worthy as you obvious spend the time, and energy to make us all so happy!! You inspire me- during this time I have managed to finish 9 quilts even some that were very deep into my stash- 2002, that i had just run out of steam but all the parts were there... on the last one from 2002- and I plan to finish this month.... then it is just the ones from 201?? On... you are a bright and shining moment in my day!! Hope all is well with you and your family.... stay safe and healthy.
Sometimes we don't have time to make a quilt. I made two Gnome in the Garden pillows for my daughter and son in law when I went down to stay with our grandkids. She's a home gardener, and loves the gnome creatures. It was fun, they whet my mojo for getting back to quilting, and she loved them.😊
Thanks Karen, I think this is one of your best videos! 😁👍. I have been doing that envelope method following Donna Jordan of Jordan Fabrics however your method is actually more descriptive. I was almost going to say to you save yourself some time and not use the illustrator clips. as a graphic designer I know how long it takes to put those together could you not just film yourself making those items and then just do a title screen of the measurements? then I thought people can pause the frame where you have the illustrations and take notes. Oh and I am also a fabric pattern designer as well. just FYI, it takes years and years to make a living at it but it is nice to have custom Fabrics. Just hope your viewers realize that these are print-on-demand sites and the quality of the ink/printing process isn't the same as what you might buy from fabric stores.
Thanks Karen! I started making t-shirt pillows as gifts with the t-shirt as the center and added quilt borders. A 12.5 square from t-shirt with 3x6 flying geese border makes a 24" x 18" pillow.
Thank you for this nice project. I am back into sewing and quilting after being in hiatus for a few years. The pillows are perfect stash busters to get ‘sew-jo’ back. Love your channel and tutorials. 💜 🧵 🥰
New to your videos but am enjoying them! Just wanted to note that the sound on this one -- WHEN THE OCCASION IS NOT QUILT WORTHY - FAST AND EASY PILLOWS -- is very un-even (loud enough but then too soft)& goes back and forth enough times that it really interrupts the flow of the message. Carry on! :)
I never expected to find reasons NOT to quilt from you. I have a new machine to make a cover for, like my friend's 4 co-ordinated random patchwork ones, but now I will just get it done - a tetrahedron type bag with the corners outside as handles.
While cleaning out my mom's craft bins / supplies, I found a stack of cards (business card size) that read: When I give to you, What I made with my hands, I share my heart. I now include my own cards with that saying and sign my name. I love when someone sends me a note telling me how they have used something I have made for them. I'm just beginning my first quilt, but I will be cautious as to who I give one to. Hope your son is doing well, I am a 13 year breast cancer survivor! Love your videos!
I have to admit i just browsed through your videos. It s not hard to see how talented and creative you are. I m going to follow you. Ii have a question though. I know how to sew. My mom was a seamstress and i ve always had my own machine. The problem i have is, that no matter what, i ALWAYS mess up the tension. The stitching falls out ect. Please, if you can give a demo on fixing tension and how to NOT ruin it, i might even try to thread my surger.
Love this. Great and clear instructions as always. I've not stopped to comment before, but the simplicity and excellence here compelled me! Thanks for the consistency and hard work!
Karen, this is such a great idea. I think I'll get some pillow forms now and be prepared when a quick gift is needed! I love the idea of orphan block usage. Thanks for the detailed information in your video that some tutorial creators take for granted that we already know. You really fulfill your opening line stating you will show us tips, tricks, and strategies!
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts PS, you created a binge watch list!!! You should mention it in your next video! And, I watched your batting video and I may never give away any batting again! The gal that takes mine want them smaller than 3", so I'm already cutting them. Now I can use them for projects. Thanks for all the ideas.
Thank you! I've taken to making the covers and keeping the same pillows. I just change them out every season so I dont have to store extra pillows. Such great gifts!
i make memory pillows.. sad but i'm at an age where a lot of friends and family are starting to pass away. so i make memory pillows for the younger members of their family. i don't have the extra batting scraps to fill a pillow so i have to fill mine with polyfill. but i actually just buy a cheap pillow from wal-mart and use that. it's a lot less expensive than the bags of it. and during the black friday sales i try to stock up on it. i take out what it don't need then cut it down to the size i want because they are often custom due to the items being used. one of the last ones specifically wanted one to be made out of a beach towel smh. i ended up using 3 body pillows sewn together!!! i don't ask questions i just do what i'm asked.. but i save the pillow outsides as well so that they can be used as needed as well. besides premades are so expensive compared to making your own. If i have run out of pillow cases, i use a muslin. they hold up to being washed well. bc people will always spill something on a pillow.
I love this, YES, I get volunteered to make a quilt by someone and my heart sinks. They don't have a clue what I'm doing and how many other projects I have going to add another that I didn't intend. The pillow idea is a great substitute. Another might be a table topper. Thanks Karen. I'm afraid I might have put another Canadian lady to encourage you to join her to cross stitch...🙄
Learn to say "NO"... "Oh no, I'm afraid I'm not able to accept any more commissions for making quilts, my backlog is already far too long. But thanks for thinking of me" :-)
If you know people who love to cook/bake, hot pads are also a great way to use single quilt blocks or smaller pieces of fabric and have fun with the quilting on a small scale (if you enjoy free motion quilting). I know a few people who love receiving personalized hot pads because they love working in the kitchen so much!
KAREN, you are brilliant! Thank you for the awesome idea's. I have several people that I don't want to really make a quilt for but they are waiting for anything made by me. This will make both them and me happy! I won't spend time and $$ on someone that won't appreciate a quilt but will love the fact that I made something "special" for them. Saving this video in my library.
Sorry for the delay with my new video. I’m sure you’ll have fun with these fast and easy pillows. It’s a great way to use up your orphan blocks and test out new ideas. And they makes great gifts
Just Get it Done Quilts love your tutorials! Don’t change a thing! I would love to learn how you did the love block as well as the jean memorial pillow block. The love looks pieced? Thank you!
Can't understand why anyone buys anything from Amazon?? Makes no sense when their prices are almost twice what everyone else is. I love your videos I watch them all the time but I wanted a cringe when you brought up Amazon. Boycott them. They're thieves. They charge way too much.
I also found instructions on Pinterest to avoid the "dog ears" on the cover. Stitch an angle seam beginning about 3-4 inches away from corner and slant the seam so that it is deeper at corner.
What a lovely way to start my day! A cup of coffee and a new Just Get it Done video! Thank you for the measurements! I have two pillows in my queue. I also heard a great tip for a pillow backing: the front of an old shirt! Buttons already to go. I am going to do this for my kids with their dad's old airline uniform shirts. Easy on easy off for changing up pillows for seasons or holidays. Love all your videos. I learn something EVERY time.
Thank you, I just made a pillow. Love the idea that when you want to give one thing special but not a Quilt, a pillow, I cut up leftover batting and added a little more filler. Your videos re so helpful!
Okay so we have this and then the next one in my feed is about the 10 sewing hacks with templates....I feel a binge watch coming on LOL and just so you know, I just did a cat quilt for my sisters birthday. I WISH I would have made a pillow!!!
It is Mid November and the US election is over. Now I have to catch up on Christmas gifts. Can't quilt for everyone so this was just the perfect video for me. I have tons of pillows which need new covers. I am downsizing radically so I want to get rid of them but rather than throw them out, I'm going to make pillows for gifts. That way, get rid of fabric from my stash, pillows from my house, and people get something nice and I still get to sleep between now and the 25th of December. Thanks so much as always.
Pillows are such a good project for when a quilt is just too much. I also like to use my quilt scraps to make a matching cushion to go with a quilt sometimes. It coordinates due to the fabrics being the same, but I don’t repeat the pattern. I like some variety!
Thanks Karen, I always look forward to your videos. I have learnt so much from you as a novice quilter so please kep up the good work. Loving the pillows and will be making some of those.
Karen, thanks for all the great videos.I've watched them all but finally got my act together today and subscribed. The last one on choosing colors really helped me on my most recent queen size quilt. Now, if only I didn't have to think about getting it and the previous one quilted and I still have to do the after-quilt for this one. Next I've bought the pattern for the Meadowland quilt. I've been thinking of you since my son is going in on Monday in the midst of the Covid19 rules to have an unidentified mass removed. Hope your son is doing ok. Cancer is a demon. Take care!
Loving this Karen ! Never thought of pillows, endless possibilities - even for me ! Thankyou so much, at the moment am doing things in all directions now. Pillows will be added. Thanks again, hugs.
Years ago when shag carpet was a thing, I had homemade bean bags split open in the kids’ basement playroom. The humidity was so great the beans sprouted! Time to get a humidifier. Just thought you’d all enjoy a funny story🤪
Thank you for telling us about Skillshare! I have signed up and I love all the different classes. Since Blueprint is closing, I was going to miss all the classes, but now I can just enjoy new ones. It is also more affordable. Thanks again and I always enjoy your videos.
Thanks again Karen. I buy pillow forms from the big box craft store that have a small zipped opening. I add my batting scraps to make them fuller. I frequently rewatch you videos as I always learn something new.
Thank you for the video. I see some wonderful Christmas presents I will be making for family. I love that the pillows are easy to make and you can use scrap material. They can be personalized (names on them, for instance, for children) and the possibilities are endless.
Thank you for sharing ❤️💗❤️ I have never tried your first pillow of longer fabric, only the cut front & 2 backs.... awesome 👍😁❣️🤗 will give it a try ... I have made my own pillows forms, to match my pillow.... SENDING A BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT OF LOVE TO SURROUND THE UNIVERSE 🤗💞💖🤗 AND EVERYONE 🤗❣️❣️🤗💞
I never heard an intro more true. People think you have nothing better to do but make them quilts for all sorts of occasions. Just knowing you have a sewing machine & know how to use it comes w/ all sorts of requests. Please sew me curtains, will you make fitted crib sheets, will you hem my pants or tailor a shirt, will you embroider my towels for me & the all time favorite - a need a gift for a baby shower. OMG ❗ I quickly learned not to show my quilts to friends and coworkers. And when they still continued to ask I first said my machine is in the repair shop. Then when they persisted I told them I sold my machine. I choose whom I want to make something for, but the truth is exactly what you said. Nobody comprehends the cost of fabric, thread & the most expensive item - your time. But I believe your pillow idea is a perfect compromise.
I love your UA-cam videos! So I signed up for Skillshare as per your recommendation--I saw that I get 2 months free(just like you said I would), and gave Skillshare my credit card. The membership came through, and there was no 2 months free...I was charged for 1 year only. I wrote to customer service, and asked why this happened, and how to get my two months free. I also asked how to cancel (just in case I was not satisfied)--I was on the site for 15 minutes and saw there were only a dozen or so quilting classes--the rest were business computer related etc. All of a sudden I couldn't see anymore classes, or sign up to watch, because later on I got an E-mail that the Skillshare customer service person (Earl) who was answering my questions, which he didn't help or answer my questions already canceled me!--
Thanks for the great tips! I’m currently working on finding thing to make with orphan blocks etc. you’ve renewed my passion and I’m off to to sewing room! Have a wonderful weekend!
Great tip about the batting scraps, thanks Karen. I agree: the heavier pillows are always the most squishy and comfy! And you just gave me a wonderful idea for using my "test blocks" (when trying out a new technique like curved or paper piecing, or a new colour scheme I've thought of combining from my stash). Hope your son is doing okay with his treatment marathon. Prayers! ~Diana K.
I’d watched this video and commented before but this is such a huge issue that I had to acknowledge it and thank you for addressing it and offering a solution again. People just really remain ignorant of the huge amount of time, work and financial cost of these labors of love that we create for them…no matter how much it is discussed (or calling them blankets!!😱😞😥. This is a thoughtful way to still give them a piece of your love and handiwork without becoming a gift box for them to use. It almost makes me wish I didn’t share the quilts sometimes. I guess I just need to be more blunt and honest…🤷🏻♀️

🤪
I would line the t-shirt with some lightweight iron-on interfacing to avoid stretching
Thanks
It was fun, they whet my mojo for getting back to quilting, and she loved them.😊
Nice
What a great video! I can feel my sewjo coming back 😀
It’s great to work on small projects
Great ideas! and I like how you cut up the batting for use for stuffing. Thank you!
It uses up so much
Thank you for this nice project. I am back into sewing and quilting after being in hiatus for a few years. The pillows are perfect stash busters to get ‘sew-jo’ back. Love your channel and tutorials. 💜 🧵 🥰
Wonderful!
Thank you! You inspire and cheer me up. Hope you're well and coping with life at this time. Bless you!
Carry on! :)
Totally awesome ideas! Thanks
I never expected to find reasons NOT to quilt from you. I have a new machine to make a cover for, like my friend's 4 co-ordinated random patchwork ones, but now I will just get it done - a tetrahedron type bag with the corners outside as handles.
Fantastic ideas, so good!
Thank you
Great ideas. Thanks
Thank you
Karen, this is such a great idea. I think I'll get some pillow forms now and be prepared when a quick gift is needed! I love the idea of orphan block usage. Thanks for the detailed information in your video that some tutorial creators take for granted that we already know. You really fulfill your opening line stating you will show us tips, tricks, and strategies!
Wonderful! Thanks for watching
Pillows are also a wonderful way to use those completed latch hook projects!
Thank you! I've taken to making the covers and keeping the same pillows. I just change them out every season so I dont have to store extra pillows. Such great gifts!
✋
I love all the ideas in this video. Yes, nice alternative to a quilt!!
👍
Absolutely fabulous!!
😊
i make memory pillows.. sad but i'm at an age where a lot of friends and family are starting to pass away. so i make memory pillows for the younger members of their family. i don't have the extra batting scraps to fill a pillow so i have to fill mine with polyfill. but i actually just buy a cheap pillow from wal-mart and use that. it's a lot less expensive than the bags of it. and during the black friday sales i try to stock up on it. i take out what it don't need then cut it down to the size i want because they are often custom due to the items being used. one of the last ones specifically wanted one to be made out of a beach towel smh. i ended up using 3 body pillows sewn together!!! i don't ask questions i just do what i'm asked.. but i save the pillow outsides as well so that they can be used as needed as well. besides premades are so expensive compared to making your own.
😊
Learn to say "NO"... "Oh no, I'm afraid I'm not able to accept any more commissions for making quilts, my backlog is already far too long. But thanks for thinking of me" :-)
Pillows versus full quilts gives me hope. And I love the ideas of using them for different sizes/functions. Thanks!
I've made a few quilted pillows using quilt scraps. Thanks for the great idea of using an orphan block as the main part of a pillow front!
"Not all people are quilt-worthy" is going to be my new life motto. LOL!
Ohhhahahaa! We quilters understannnnd the "couldja just whip somethin up" thing.. Thanks for this excellent tutorial! ❤
Oooo love these ideas.. Time to bring out my fabric and make one for a graduation gift for my granddaughter
Wonderful!
Great ideas thank you 🙏
👍
Thanks for a great video!
😊
Where do you buy pillow fillers cheaper? Give us a source please.
@@dianaseals4670 Kristy Lea @quietplay
@@rwind656 I get mine from either Walmart or Hobby Lobby. Even when Joanns has a sale they are still more than WM OR HL.
So much faster than a quilt
❤❤❤Karen, you knocked this out of the park! Thank you for all the geat ideas. I'm inspired!!!
Take care!
Sending good vibes your way
Love this because sometimes I don’t want to spend the
Time and money to make a quilt!
Great ideas with pillows, door stop in the lower underside - gets the draft and I really like it!
This is an excellent video to see what can be made and how. Love it!
So good to see you, this morning, Karen! Love your pillows! Have a wonderful and blessed day!
Fabulous ideas! Thanks Karen for the inspiration!
Glad you like them!
Love your videos. So many ideas Thank you so much for sharing n God Bless
Loving this Karen ! Never thought of pillows, endless possibilities - even for me ! Thankyou so much, at the moment am doing things in all directions now. Pillows will be added. Thanks again, hugs.
Great to test out new techniques and blocks instead of committing to a whole quilt too
Thank you for such easy to understand instructions. Made my first pillow cover today.
Years ago when shag carpet was a thing, I had homemade bean bags split open in the kids’ basement playroom. The humidity was so great the beans sprouted! Time to get a humidifier. Just thought you’d all enjoy a funny story🤪
I've started using aquarium pebbles as they are not affected by moisture 😊
Thank you for telling us about Skillshare! I have signed up and I love all the different classes. Since Blueprint is closing, I was going to miss all the classes, but now I can just enjoy new ones. It is also more affordable. Thanks again and I always enjoy your videos.
Great to hear!
Thanks again Karen. I buy pillow forms from the big box craft store that have a small zipped opening. I add my batting scraps to make them fuller. I frequently rewatch you videos as I always learn something new.
I may not do pillows but I just love listening to you anyway. Great great job.
Glad you like them!
Thank you for the video. I see some wonderful Christmas presents I will be making for family. I love that the pillows are easy to make and you can use scrap material. They can be personalized (names on them, for instance, for children) and the possibilities are endless.
I didn't even mention how they can make a room pop too. 🤪
Thank you for sharing ❤️💗❤️
I have never tried your first pillow of longer fabric, only the cut front & 2 backs.... awesome 👍😁❣️🤗 will give it a try ...
OMG ❗
I quickly learned not to show my quilts to friends and coworkers.
GREAT tutorial!! I know pillows are "easy" but I still go thru all kinds of intense math to do them!!!! You wrote it all down for me 😁
I love your UA-cam videos! All of a sudden I couldn't see anymore classes, or sign up to watch, because later on I got an E-mail that the Skillshare customer service person (Earl) who was answering my questions, which he didn't help or answer my questions already canceled me!--
So many great ideas! My head is spinning and I am enthused. Thank you.
Thanks for the great tips! I’m currently working on finding thing to make with orphan blocks etc. you’ve renewed my passion and I’m off to to sewing room! Have a wonderful weekend!
Orphan blocks are perfect for pillows
Thanks for interesting ideas
Love this video - thanks! I find that adding thread scraps to the pillow filling also helps lessen the bumpy feel
Great tip!
You are my favourite beloved "UA-cam Auntie" who teaches me to sew and then quilt. Thank you for your videos.
Prayers! ~Diana K.
Thank you Karen. Lots of ideas and tips to think about.
I guess I just need to be more blunt and honest…🤷🏻♀️
i love all your videos!
Thanks for being wonderful I love your perspectives and easy to understand explanations
Thank you
