I love the part where they ignore a massive amount of those eels are from the east coast of the USA. Here in the northeast we have a lottery system that you can get drawn to harvest Elvers "glass eels" and you can make a few grand per pound of them if you are selling directly to Japan.
Fishing rights in North America are way too often completely ignored, even by on-topic documentaries and articles. I feel like it’s incorrectly considered not interesting enough unless you’re in the business, although it might just be because it’s complicated. Of course fishing itself is actually a bit of a touchy subject if you get into it. Even those incredibly popular crabbing shows barely touched on how contentious fishing rights and zoning has become all around N. America.
Yes and due to Japanese eel farming alomst extinct, when you catch young they can not reproduce also alot of the glas eel were to be eaten by other fish so they are also starving other fish in the ecosystem.
For anyone wondering, we still do not know how these eels breed, litterally hundreds of years after they were discovered we have no clue how they make more of themselves, which is why they can't breed them, can't breed something if you don't know how it reproduces My favourite eel related fact is that sigmand Freud (yes that one) was tasked to find the male and female of the eels, he couldn't find a male eel in the entire bunch, because as it turns out the males don't grow gonads (balls n dick) until mating season. Eels play by no ones rules and put a middle finger to mother nature

For the last 10 years Japan's got most of its eels from New England. There used to be a wild breeding colony in Maine in New Hampshire and they decimated the hatchlings selling them to Japanese Farmers for $2 a fry
Yupp glass eel fishing has been a constant battle for game wardens here in maine. They'll set traps in the river to catch them as they go down stream to mature.
Once upon a time, Eels were a Gourmet delicacy in Loch Ness, Scotland. However, the Aquatic Culture was lost in One generation. This was due to the younger Generation that had moved on to bigger Cities as a result of existential anxiety. This is akin to what had happened to the Farm Families in the Mid West of The United States. Although, no one can deny that City Lights attract:, but in reality, it's nothing more than a illusion if you have conquered your fear of the dark !
They feel the eels? At least they don't steal seals. Eel farming feels surreal, a deal sealed with zeal, where the meal for the eels appeals to their keen sense to heal. With a reel of steel, farmers wheel in meals, ensuring each eel feels the peal of their feed, a reveal that seals their growing appeal. The squeals of delighted eels reel in the field, a cycle that deals in a yield that thrills. Each meal they steal fills their gills, and as the field heals, the farm's appeal seals the deal.
"Eels are raised on farms not caught. These eels were caught then taken to be raised in farms like this." Litteraly said in the same breath. Theyre wild caught.
If you've never tried grilled eel, I highly recommend it. It's one of the most delicious fish you can eat. Tons of flavor, and it's got a good buttery, flaky texture.
Yeah and many of those baby eels are imported from the US. The population of the American eel is in serious decline due to this industry. If you've ever had eel, that's likely the dark origin. I used to do conservation research monitoring wild American eel populations. There aren't many, but it was always a big day when we saw one, especially if we saw babies.

That's what farming animals is. If you're just going to kill it or sell it to be killed, you don't even think twice about each one of those little life forms. Its really gross when you think about it.
Just curious, how does that make it unsustainable? I understand that it *could*, if they were catching so many that populations declined, but just the fact that they catch them young is not indicative that it’s unsustainable. There needs to be more information than that.
@@TheMortalKombatent Fair enough. I just wanted to point out that catching fish in the wild, as young or otherwise, is on its own not enough to be considered an unsustainable practice. In this case with the quantity that we do it (in addition to other factors like climate change and dams), it is a problem.
I suppose the idea is that if you're taking them young, there are more resources for the eels that stay, allowing them to grow and breed with the reduced competition
Catching the babies is also the reason why their population is continuously dwindling. Also one of the very reason why Japanese Eels re so expensive. The lesser they are in the wild the higher the prices can get.
Not all Japanese eels are expensive. I particularly eat an eel ekiben almost every shinkansen ride I take.
America.

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. Still trying to find something that can fill that emptiness in your heart. You can't find that in this world.. only in Christ, the bible is no chains, it's a chainbreaker.
