Videogames, especially the horror kind, play on our emotions quite a bit. They have to, but how do they do that and does it even work? Let's have a look at water, Subnautica, Dave the Diver and a little bit of Amnesia.

At this point I am no longer afraid of horror movies because the horror of the real world is far scarier.

I almost shat my pants when first encountering the Butcher in the original Diablo. Both his chamber, as well as his "Aaaah, fresh meat!"-shout (being the first time a monster directly adresses you) and his insane combat prowess made one seriously frightening package.

I still also have nightmares from The Suffering.
Now rarely what is truly scary comparing to those early experiences.

I think the best horror games exploit not only phobias, but also some very primal fears. As you said, games like Silent Hill used certain monsters that represented certain acts that UA-cam's algorithm absolutely hates even being said, nevermind shown. Alien: Isolation really freaked me out when I played it for a lengthy time. Part of that reason was because my best friend was away and not within contact, so I was lonely and bored. The titular isolation present in that game really poked something in my brain. Most of my game play was spent moving from one hiding spot to the next, afraid to move. Many times, I would leave a hiding spot only to hear the alien stomping around nearby and I'd rush back to the hiding spot I'd just left and get right back in.
The RE2 remake did something similar with Mr. X. When he first appeared in the game, my immediate reaction was to run the hell away. It didn't take long before I found that a number of rooms were "safe places" from Mr. X. Eventually I found that he was pretty easy to avoid as well, he couldn't keep up with the PC when they were running. That's about the time the game started throwing curveballs. Try having to run from Mr. X and then finding out there's a licker in the hallway too! I cursed the dev team for that one, literally!

I loved Alien: Isolation for that reason alone, it did a very good job of making me feel like there was no hope of rescue from the outside. And RE2's remake was fantastic, especially because I hadn't played the original!

I expected a video about horror games, and got a very thoughtful video concerning phobias and ways to manage them. Great video Jinzee!
I'm alot like you when it comes to fear being more pronounced when you know something dangerous actually exists rather then something fictitious. For example I was never scared watching movies with ghosts and aliens, but the show Unsolved Mysteries... which told stories of supposedly real ghosts and aliens... scared the living shit out of me... nevermind the creepy theme music and Robert Stack's authoritative voice making everything he says that much more bone chilling.

This was a great video! Music really does help with scary atmospheres like that, it’s great. I use it whenever I’m in any situations that’s giving me genuine terror (like out in the middle of nowhere at night, ooh I hate that). My fear-lodged brain will go, “Well someone in a movie would never be killed if they were listening to baby shark,” and so logically I must then play something as ridiculous as baby shark to get me through it. And I’ve been murdered zero times so far so it seems to be working!

Yeah, the mystery is a big part of why I love horror media. It plays on your imagination, ignites your curiosity, but also tingles that primal fear of unknown.
Darkwood is one of my favorite horror games and it's a 2D top down hand drawn title, it just handles the mystery element of horror so incredibly well, not just in the story, but in moment to moment gameplay too, thanks to some amazing sound design. More often than not you can hear a lot of different things happening around you, but due to limited field of vision you're not sure what exactly are you hearing. Sitting bunkered down in your hideout during the nighttime only to hear the floor creaking in the next room, or someone (or something) outside knocking at the door really fires up your imagination and builds up tension fast.

Really great video! Definitely takes me back and made me think of a similar experiences and phobias. I do find the horror games and movies don't really do much for me. They're usually just reliant on jump scares and I definitely feel like those are the cheaper ways media does horror.
For me, SOMA and games like it cause me more fear and existential anxiety than most horror media.

I remember the fear I felt playing The Evil WIthin 2 on the PS4 in Classic mode. You only have limited saves and no autosave, and what made it worse was that there was a bug that had a habit of crashing the game in Classic mode during one of the boss fights. I felt so much dread when getting to that section, wondering if I'd actually make it this time...

I remember having to really push through the Armogohma fight. I had to pause the game a lot to calm down. Replaying that game a handful of times has helped me tackle that fear. Now, I admittedly see each rematch as a bit of revenge for the past.

Please accept my "Almost Drowned" story, in solidarity:
I got stuck in a cave network under an island in the Aegean Sea. It didn't start off filled with water, but rising tides being what they are means it was over my head before too long.
Kept having to pop out of the water into tiny air pockets (just like a video game.) The problem wasn't the rising water, it was the fact I couldn't move my arms in the cramped cave.
I still love the water, but I ended up with claustrophobia. Claustrophobia doesn't really translate to games; if my character doesn't have freedom of movement, I can shake the feeling by just stretching my arms out.
Tried to face it last year with my then five year old. There's an indoor mock up cave network for kids to crawl around near where we went on holiday. It has ball pits and slides, and there are staff on hand and the walls aren't going to collapse. Perfectly safe. I managed to go around one small part of it and got completely paralysed.
The girl who worked there helped me back into a larger area, and my daughter carried on exploring... until she got stuck in a ball pit. She called for me to help her but i couldn't go in. The same girl went in, helped my daughter climb out, and that was that. She had a great time... and I was left feeling like my daughter needed me and I couldn't save her, which even now makes me absolutely hate myself 😔

I have two recommendations for you, just in case, especially if you consider playing with some friends as an alternative (I know I do to help with some of my issues >_> )
The first, while not being a horror game, is Sea of Thieves! It's heavily water-based, some content being underwater, but nothing mandatory, so you can tackle the game at your own pace and take breather anytime you need it! Little warning, it's in first-person view, like Subnautica! ^^"
The second is Barotrauma! You play in a submarine (either solo or as a crew (AI or players)) on a water-based planet, travelling between outposts while trying to survive to a very hostile world and maybe, if living long enough, discovering the secrets hiding in the abyss! It's pretty dark, kinda hard sometimes, but it's in 2D! :)
    Best regards from France! (>^.^)>

Thanks to you I just realized...
I have aracnophobia. But now I know, thanks to you. It is not because they are strange, it is not because they look dangeraous or sound creepy...
When I was 6 a weird spider was in my fridge and jump to me, never to be seen again. Days after, I started to get sick, fevers, compulsions...to the point of getting hospitalized. For weeks the medics didn't know what was happening to me. I started to feel more week and after some weeks, I couldn't even sense my legs and was in a wheel chair. Then, a thought to a medic appeared that it might have been a spider, the black widow. If it wasn't for that medic I would be dead, the treatment began and I was cured and very healthy know.
Apparently, my neighbour liked to illegally collect exotic animals and his black widow escaped and he said nothing to no one, causing almost my death.
To this day, the true things that terrify me are not only spiders, but things that ''wait'', for what? I don't know, but seeing that spider in that fridge, me unable to move or to react and then seeing that spider disappear with a jump against me....terrifies me.
This applies to Wolnir from Dark Souls 3, or the strange blub of meat in Bloodborne that you can through into an abyss and then go to it and STARE at it.
    This video is incredible.

I have rather crippling arachnophobia. It's gotten much better since I moved to Singapore (they gas bugs for dengue control, so most of the spiders are in the jungle where they belong, not my living room) both in terms of my ability to go about my life without constantly thinking about possible hiding places for spiders, and in terms of my actual response when spiders do show up.
It would be my presumption that how a person responds to distance from their phobia trigger has to do with their latent feelings about the target of their phobia. I think spiders are cool and interesting in the abstract, so when they aren't constantly triggering panic attacks, my visceral feelings about them improve over time. I also have aphantasia which might help with that. It's not like i can picture a spider in my head or make them seem scarier than they are by stewing in imaginary imagery of them.
I was in chat one of the times you were playing subnautica and I still feel bad about some comments I made playing up the creepiness angle before I realized you were legitimately struggling and not just "fun scared". I hope playing deep water games works better for you than living in spider infested houses did for me.
It would make sense for it to, you control whether you're going to expose yourself to that experience at any given moment, and you can stop whenever you want. I wish you all the best on this journey.

As far as games go, I played the original Dead Space about a decade ago. Asking other people, it seems that the game is best when played in 1-2 hour intervals. I was playing upwards of 6😅. The game didn’t scare me, but the atmosphere is unsettling at times and by playing it so long, had seeped into my subconscious. One night, might phone alerted from a text message at 2am. The sound shot me up out of best and I screamed. That was the last and closest instance of me feeling fear from a game.

And not just from the big scary monsters in the game right, but from just having to dive. Because that's what the game is all about.
I found that I am scared of deep water I can't see the bottom of, I don't think it's quite Thalassophobia as I can push past it (which I don't think counts then). I love water and I love the ocean but I don't really wanna swim in it. I don't wanna swim in lakes either. Or anything I can't see the bottom of. I don't know what's swimming in there. But I really, really want to swim in Deep Dive Dubai.
I am nearing my first completion of Subnautica. It's taken a long time and it's been hard and very scary but I found that I've loved it.
I still hate hearing the sound of a Reaper roaring in the waters near me. It fills me with instant dread. I still get surprised when something smacks into my ship or attacks me from behind. It's all so scary. But it's the first game to give me the freedom to live underwater. Which oddly, despite my incredible fear of it, is something I love.
tl;dr Subnautica is scary but I love it.

I don't play horror games much because they annoy me. The protag is either too weak to do anything meaningful or the game uses cheap tactics to spook which barely work.
As for actually being afraid, I'm nearly 40, the only thing that scares me are bill collectors.
I love RE series for the "powerless to powerful" gameplay. You start without a way to defeat the monster and then you get a shotgun and the only thing they fear is you. lol

I quite enjoy the pre 4 REsident Evil games, Silent Hill 1-3, Eternal Darkness and the Fatal Frame/Project Zero series. And to me either in games or movies, that's the thing that always drew me in the mystery. I wanted to know what was going on. Well the mystery and dark atmosphere. I don't get scared by fiction, just intrigued.

Horror movies annoy me because a lot of characters in them are stupid or the monsters are done in such a way that has nothing to do with reality and that always kicks me out of the story. (I find psychological thrillers a lot scarier.) However, horror games are another thing since I get immersed in the story. Titles that I remember to this day even tho a lot of time has passed since I played them are “The Suffering”, Return to Castle Wolfenstein”, “Max Payne”, “BioShock”, “Alan Wake”, just to name a few. ☺️

Sadly, the only times I found myself scared because of a video game was when I was a kid... but not while playing. It was afterwards, when I had to go back home in the middle of the night from my friend's house, and that is it.
I have never been scared of video games, and laugh when other people do get scared because I can't understand it and find their reactions funny. To be honest, I have always been kind of jealous of people who can "enjoy" horror video games the "right way", when they can feel the thrill of being scared and enjoy it in a safe environment.
Meanwhile, I can only enjoy survival horror games, not because they are scary to me, but only because of their entertainment and challenging factors. I get bored to death instead of getting scared when I play "pure horror" games where you can't defend yourself whatsoever. At least in the 99% of the games of that kind that I have tried.

I have fear of heights. Never affected me back in the days when I played games. But I struggle standing on a chair, and fainted watching some El Camino del Rey trekking video on youtube. Yeah, it's that bad. But also, I love flying and feel safe even in turbulence in small GA planes, so it's weird. Fear in games? Never from the typical horror stuff, doesn't bother me at all and I just don't get what the deal is. Tensing up in stealthy sections? Sure, but I wouldn't call it "fear". Only game that actually made me scared, and I only watched it rather than played it, was Death Stranding. You'll have to play it through until the very end to see why, and probably not everyone is going to have that feeling. Most will get *something* out of it though, at least if they "get it".
Death Stranding is a long and slow paced "delivery boi simulator" (expect 50-60 hours for a regular playthrough) with emphasis on terrain traversal (not a walking simulator, that's a genre reserved for other games with no emphasis on traversal at all), and a couple of insane storylines to uncover. Three actually, but I haven't seen anyone uncover the last story/secret/reveal and made sense of it all. Watching it 40+ times in full shows more and more well hidden clues to these mysteries, but the two main mysteries you're guided through and should be able to go "called it" at least for one of them when the reveals hit. It's weird af from the get-go, but things will get explained as you go along. "Wtf is this? Am I on drugs?" is a recurring question from new players. There is some combat and quite a bit of stealth, but new tools and gizmos to try out are unlocked along the way. Multiplayer aspect is limited to a chance of having other players structures showing up in your instance, you'll never interact with or see any other players. Chance is influenced by what you do, so I recommend not completely rushing through the story. The story is delivered in a very Kafkaesque way, although the messages are highly philosophical. So obvious not a game that suits everyone. Should you ever consider this, be sure to watch YongYea's spoiler free review of it first.

Death Stranding has been on my wishlist for a while now but the reviews are very conflicting so I've been putting it off a bit. Definitely a polarizing game that I look forward to playing one day.

@@ProperBird Typically the haters spent max 5-20 hours in it and likely gave up because it was "boring" and too slow for them. And heavy on the cutscenes; probably 4 hours worth of cutscenes just from the intro and end alone, with very little player interaction outside of basic movement tutorial. Some don't like chess, but that doesn't make it a bad game. But it's not a "horror/terror" game, even though it managed to scare the living daylights out of me for reasons outside the norm I hope will become evident should you decide to have a go.

For me personally that depends on the typw of horror, i see 2 types supernatural horror and scientific horror, scientific horror/man-made horror such as zomebies, escaped genetic experiments and such doesn't scare me IE resident evil and such, however supernatural horror is something else entirely different, its not man made, its old, been around before most of us, is raw evil and there isn't always a solution like with science, it can have motives beyond us, its its unnatural, unholy something that cannot and should not be but yet is, example isve never played a silent hill game other than a few minutes less tha. 10 minutes of 2-3 never played them again.

@@ProperBird I honestly think Iron Lung is capable of giving some people phobias. That said if you like horror games it's probably fine once you're already okay with the water.
Subnautica is better in comparison because, among other things, you actually have the chance to acclimate to the water, the depths and the monsters even if doing so is not at all easy.
Subnautica Below Zero is something you might want to try after the first game. I find it less scary overall but you also have less stuff you can put between you and the threats and there are some areas where ice can block you from swimming up for air.
