"Battle of Lepanto" is a song commissioned by one of our fans, Eryn Huntington and several of her friends. We hope you enjoy it:)
Happy Feast of the Holy Rosary!
    Song Description:
We wrote this piece in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary under her titles of: Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Our Lady of Victory, and Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Battle of Lepanto was Oct 7, 1571.
The piece begins with string tones inspired from a charting of Our Lady of Guadalupe's Tilma. Next follows a motif from a hymn "O Queen of the Holy Rosary" sounded by a clarinet. (The piece ends with this same motif). Next begins the Gregorian chant "Ave Maria". This is paused to begin the historic content of the piece. We used lyrics from G.K. Chesterton's "Lepanto" as the body of the pieces to drive the story forward. We made the refrain from various prayers or sayings. "Confugimus, Sancta Dei Genitrix, and Sub Tuum Praesidium" are all phrases within a very ancient prayer to the Blessed Virgin that begins "Sub Tuum Praesidium". The words "Signum Magnum" appear in the book of the Apocalypse (Revelation) 12:1 - "And a great sign appeared in heaven" and is used as the introit from the Mass of the Assumption (Aug. 15). The words "in hoc signum vinces" are taken from a vision that Constantine had before taking Rome: "In this sign you shall conquer". While in his case, the sign was the cross, we wanted to demonstrate that in this battle, and in our lives, it is by the sign of Our Lady that we shall conquer...specifically the Rosary.
The entire translation of the Latin refrain is as follows:
Confugimus - We fly unto thee
Sancta Dei Genitrix - Holy Mother of God
Signum Magnum - A great sign
In hoc signum vinces - by this sign, you shall conquer
    Confugimus
Sub tuum praesidium - Under thy protection
Guadalupe - (A title of Our Lady taken from a word that means "one who will crush the serpent's head)
    In hoc signum vinces
In the verse "Galleys clash..." we wanted to show that we are still fighting for our souls through our prayers to Our Lady. "Fingers worn now draw forth their beads" - We specifically thought of the prayers of the religious, whose fingers are worn not so much from toil so to speak, but from rigorous prayer.
We composed and arranged the piece. My family sang it.
Please no bad language in the comments. We want this to be family friendly:) Thank you!
    Lyrics:
    Battle of Lepanto
    Ave Maria
    Gratia plena All men
    Dominus tecum
    Benedicta tu in mulieribus
They have dared the white republics up the capes of Italy,
They have dashed the Adriatic round the Lion of the Sea,
And the Pope has cast his arms abroad for agony and loss,
And called the kings of Christendom for swords about the Cross,
    Chorus
    CONFUGIMUS
    SANCTA DEI GENITRIX
    SIGNUM MAGNUM
    IN HOC SIGNUM VINCES
    CONFUGIMUS
    SUB TUUM PRAESIDIUM
    GUADALUPE
    IN HOC SIGNUM VINCES
The Pope was in his chapel before day or battle broke,
(Don John of Austria is hidden in the smoke.)
He sees as in a mirror on the monstrous twilight sea
    The crescent of his cruel ships whose name is mystery;
St. Michael’s on his mountain in the sea-roads of the north
(And now Don John of Austria is girt and going forth.)
    He shakes his lance of iron and he claps his wings of stone;
    The noise is gone through Normandy; the noise is gone alone;
    Chorus
Et benedictus fructus ventris tui Jesus
    Sancta Maria
    Mater Dei
    Ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
Where, risen from a doubtful seat and half attainted stall,
The last knight of Europe taketh weapons from the wall,
The last and lingering troubadour to whom the bird has sung,
That once went singing southward when all the world was young,
In that enormous silence, tiny and unafraid,
Comes up along a winding road the noise of the Crusade.
Strong gongs groaning as the guns boom far,
Now Don John of Austria is going to the war,
    Chorus
    BRIDGE:
Galleys clash, a battle of creeds,
Fingers worn now draw forth their beads
    Many Aves pierce the sky
Victory shall come from on High
    Chorus

Devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary was older that Lepanto. It was the Rosary that destroyed the Albigensian heresy in the 1200s.

Oh I love that you are having made such a wonderful song both honoring our Lady and recalling our great history. A battle that changed the fate of Europe is completely ignored by modern historians. Perhaps this will stir the curiosity of some of your listeners to do some research . Many people do not know that John of Austria was actually the son of the king of Spain. The name Guadalupe actually is from a Marian shrine in Guadalupe Spain on the Guadalupe river. This predates Columbus by several centuries. But when Juan Diego told the bishop that the name of the woman was “one who crushes the head of the serpent” , he said it in his own language and the words sounded to the Spanish ear as Guadalupe, a name with which they were already familiar.

Only one thing about the etimology of Guadalupe, its origin cannot be náhuatl, because there already was a Virgin of Guadalupe in Extremadura, Spain since the 12 th century. The one in Mexico was named after this one. So it probably has an arabic origin, something related to "river", as in Guadalquivir, Guadalajara, etc.

What Our Lady identified herself as to St. Juan Diego wasn't actually 'Guadalupe'. (Juan Diego did not speak Spanish.) It was an Aztec phrase I can vaguely remember the sound of but cannot hope to spell, that sounded similar to 'Guadalupe', and meant 'She Who Crushes the Head of the Serpent'. Bishop Zumeraga just messed up the pronunciation. But there was a shrine to Our Lady back in an area of Spain called Guadalupe, which is probably why he settled on that word to proclaim her to the Spanish Empire, and thus, the world.

A truly wonderful arrangement of a truly wonderful poem. It goes right to this Catholic historian’s heart.
I appreciate the reference to Our Lady of Guadelupe in relation to Lepanto. Admiral Andrea Doria of Genoa, who fought at Lepanto, had a replica image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in his cabin, personally blessed by the Archbishop of Mexico.
A tale is told of that Admiral Doria’s ship was blown off course and surrounded during the battle, and at his desperate prayer before the image, a favorable wind immediately arose and allowed him to rejoin the main fleet.
