How to fix a whale gulper (shower waste pump) on a narrowboat
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 чер 2018
- The whale gulper takes the grey water from the shower and pumps it out into the canal. We noticed recently that ours wasn't performing as well as usual so took some time out from cruising to take a look at it.

i am now an official narrowboat experience addict , no rehab needed , great video ladies
Well done! A person really had to be practical living on a boat don’t they? I’d be hopeless! You two are brilliant xx
Well done ladies! It is so kind of you, Anna, to offer Kath all of your encouragement and advice as she completes the job!
However, in fairness it was Anna who actually fixed the clogged drain pipe... you two make a great team.
Only one of us fits under that sink!!! Plus I make the teas ;)
Again, you ladies got skills and determination. Bravo!
So good to see you tackle these jobs and no doubt save yourself some money in the process
Fascinating, very well done both of you. I never thought I would ever get to see a video about a Whale Gulper.
And then there it is! lol
I find it amazing that I would watch a video about cleaning a 🐳 gulper and actually find it interesting. Well done ❗
I don’t have a gulper and I found it interesting. You’re both so entertaining x
I hope I don't offend you with my American enthusiasm but I think you guys kick ass!! It's awesome that you find an issue, fix, repair, replace whatever and just handle it. I'm sure I would go broke owning a narrowboat because I would have to hire all this stuff done. Kiss the cats!
Never ending maintenance. Love that you girls will try and fix stuff. Great if i can you can video
It's our motto. Really no other option though- if it's broke you got to give it a go.
Fascinating name for a shower pump. The Kath-splaining website thingy was interesting to read too, making the whole process very clear and easy to understand. Reminded me of the 3 day drama I had with my washing machine gradually losing its ability to drain until finally it stopped altogether and I got the dreaded "machine is blocked" code on the digital panel. Caused by a coin that perfectly mimicked what the cats foil/hairball did to your Gulper.
Glad you enjoyed the blog post on the website. I'm waiting for the WM to have to need to be looked at also
The last time we had a problem with a washing machine it was the computer that ran the various cycle options ... Much easier when I was living on the boat where, in the end, I washed my clothes by hand: no computers involved :)
+The Narrowboat Experience : My new mantra with the washing machine is to empty all my pockets of coins before they get to the laundry basket. Totally amazing how the work their way from the clothes into the minute gap in the washing bowl and then into the drain pump. I still don't understand how they manage it (magic I guess).
Hi guys, the both of you are a jack of all trades
The white paint on the walls looks sooo bright and cheerful, very nice
Thanks, we think it makes a big difference
Hair and soap residue are the enemy of the shower drain. Someone else said it and I agree, you need to get a screen for the shower drain to prevent this problem from coming back.
Brilliant as always!! xx
Thank you.
Great job, you’re so handy! Thanks.
Ladies you are so right, this weekend we must all clean our gulper. Cheers
I got a brand new shower pump and it takes the water away very slowly ,i not sure why , the only thing it might be the whale gulpers are the better ,but 5 times the price , i still working on it to figure it out!
Thanks for the vlog
Well done! You might want to think about installing an inline strainer (like a Jabsco Pumpguard) between the drain(s) and the mighty Gulper.
Thanks for the tip
Well done ladies 👍🏼⏰
Good job.
You truly are SuperWomen! Very impressive! Mind you, you fitted out your whole bathroom... it's to be expected.
Good job girls, you're real boaters now, if you know how to clean a Gulper, there won't be much else that you can't do.
Well done not a lot you two can't do you make a good team. You did well doing it in that time things usually take twice as long as you think once you start.
Yes, that's why we set the timer.
I love the wan An said she fixed it, after all Kath's hard work.
This whale gulper makes such a nostalgic noise. Its like a seal and slow starter motor simultaneously.
Half the job is usually getting access and room to sort problems out, no problem here. Good job.
Extra problem central.. boatworld is rarely straight ahead and predictable,.. great video..
True.
Hello girls, new subscriber here....next time you're in Dunelm, get yourselves a Tala Sink Strainer (or White Hair Stopper) which will catch all of the hair and foil balls before it gets trapped down the plug hole
super mario sisters! lol
nice work... lets hope that fixed it!
Hi you need to fit a inline filter be for your pump this will help and saving damaging your pump 👍
Garry Stacey It would be more hassle than it's worth. You would be forever cleaning the filter. These pumps last years and are designed for this type of use. A service kit is a few pounds, you can't really break the pump just block it. Worst case scenario a new gulper is only £100. A small price to pay for not having to clean a filter every week.
a gulper pump is designed to cope with hair and gunk. The hair and gunk doesn't pass through the pump itself.
Hi ladies! I do not have a Whale Gulper. Mine is called a Dolphin Gobbler ;) (Jabsco) However, when mine becomes slow at pumping the water out of the shower there is an inline filter, fitted on the waste pipe before the pump. It is a plastic capsule thing that unscrews, revealing a cylindrical mesh filter. It blocks up with cat hair etc over time. I never have to take the actual pump apart. Have you not got an inline filter? There didn't seem to be much muck in that gulper to cause an issue.
Thanks for the tip
What I do is leave the kitchen sink cold tap on and use the wall pump switch to turn on and off. Obviously I have to close the tap and switch on if I want to use the bathroom. Doing it this way means I don’t have to worry about turning the pump off when leaving the boat and no worries about small constant leaks. Also the tap drips to relieve pressure when the central heating is on or engine warming the calorifier as I don’t have an expansion tank and there is a slight leak from the pressure relief hull outlet pipe if that goes off. My pump has an inline filter just before it and it clogs all the time. I think it is too fine to cope.
Was it Kath done all the work
It just looked that way because I (Kath) never do any filming. Annamarie does more work than me.
I think it was actually Kath what did it!! We have to have a hair catching thing over the drain hole in the shower (on land) to keep my daughter's long hair from going down. that way you get to fish it out before it goes down - still a bit yukky
Yes, but only one of us fits under the sink and I supervised lol
indeed!
Does the gray water just go into the canal? I'll have to stop peeing in the shower for our narrowboat adventure this fall!
Yes all grey water goes straight out. Good luck on your adventure
Well done on finding the problem. Hair in the pipes, or washing machine filters, can be a problem. At least you have cats, and not moulting type dogs. Hair can then become a problem everywhere (grin).....
Very true.
Ahhhh...Kath's heritage suddenly became apparent with the miner's lamp on her head :) Did you have a canary that we didn't see? :)
Fit a strainer in the line between the shower and the pump, easier to clean and you don't have to remove the pump
But, is the problem gone?
You should give David a call and tell him wat you did :D
Good job girls.
Greetings,, Kitty.
Yes, the drain is running perfectly. Thanks.
You never showed us the proof. Do you now have a Whale Gulper or still have a minnow spritzer?
It works now. All fixed!
That's one of those gross jobs I'd have to hire someone to do while I went out for coffee.
Really? No! The gulper wasn't even gross. But I guess the blocked drain was a little bit- but more interesting than gross. lol
Optimisticly: 1 hour.
Realisticly: 4 hour.
🤨🙂😊😁😆😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"Gulper". What an apropos word. The outside drain pipe should be called the spitter. lol
You horrible people! Thats a job id never even thought of. Add it to the list! 😁
No- don't add it to your list. Just know that if the drain starts emptying slowly clean the pipes before the gulper.
Okey dokey
I'm having deja vu - thinking I've seen this.
Not on our channel...
Why do we always we when in my case it’s my husband who does the work
Well done girls, I have to say if you hadn't have cleaned the Gulper you wouldn't have found the hair and the leak. 40 minutes impressive as I take it you haven't done this before? Whose hair was it? Lol
Well done Ladies, Only sailors shower, very masculine Ladies shower comes with a delicate aroma. Cheers
Very funny.
I really enjoy your videos but I have just one complaint about them. They're too short.
That’s the best complaint we’ve had!
:)
Thank you both for the review of your Whale Gulper and for showing how easy the product is to maintain! The Gulper design is ideal for handling debris so I'm glad there was nothing wrong with it in the end :-) We had some fun in our lab putting our Gulper Toilet Pump to the test - ua-cam.com/video/8-71i6UUdAg/v-deo.html. Best wishes, Hayley
Thank you for your feedback on our review. it is an easy product to maintain.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience We're so glad you have found that! I don't suppose we could get a quote for our website? I can send you my email address if better to chat over that? Best wishes, Hayley
I must admit watching this made me swallow hard yes I was a gulper😋 but when u git right down it the bald facts where hair today gone tomorrow . Our domestic shower has thus problem my wife denies responsibility but then I have not got 9" seriously blonde locks . Great fun girls loved it loved it.
Maybe you need one of those plug filter things at home too?
Blame the cats for "hairballs"
