This is a great video - I too have a 1999 996 (January C2). Pushing about 168,000 K (105,000 miles ish). IMS was done by a Previous Owner at 117,000 KM which is also when the clutch was done. I recently did the alternator, starter and water pump. As far as I know, AOS, oil tube, expansion tank, etc. are all original. Contemplating what I will do as my major upgrade as I close in on 200,000 KM. This helps a lot in determining what work to do. Thank you. Would also be interested in seeing a video on a an electric conversion
I wonder if you can help … I am in process of rebuilding my 2008 997.1 C2 … whilst engine is disassembled, I thought it a good idea to get my machine shop to replace the IMS bearing … it seems that the larger bearing is a ‘industry standard’ 6305 type … is this correct? … is there a particular manufacturer/type that you would recommend? … is it better to use a sealed or unsealed type? … any help/guidance really appreciated 🤞
i am a proud owner of a 2003 c2 tip, bought a new crate engine from porsche 4 years ago, which is running flawless... despite i am located approx. 50mls from the factory, no one could answer me the question, if these "new" engines fixed the ims problem by the factory... all they tell me is, geee, yeah, it should be stronger now, don't worry... do one of you guys have an idea what really is going on, do i have to do an ims upgrade? as a tip, there is no clutch to swap, i feel helpless... thx in advance for an educated advice, you guys over the pond are often way better informed, that is a fact...😎 in germany, porsche clubs are about being rich, eating, golf, shopping, cars are just a vehicle to brag, sadly... unfortunately, as a german living in germany, i can't join the pca, but i really respect your club for the dedication shown to all of the cars and the technical aspects...
My hero, Jake 😃 the IMS Guru and bore scoring prophet

Great info guys. Thanks
Any difference in removing the trans if tiptronic vs standard to do the IMS procedure?
Charles/ Seattle area
Great video guys.
👍
I have a four post lift and wonder how wide the engine assembly is as it sits on that engine table? Would it fit between the ramps. Thanks
Thans guys but my Cayman is a 2008 and it would require splitting the cases since it has the later large bearing. Learned a lot from Jake's videos.
Great informative video.
I’ve had a rattle at
3000 rpm for 4 yrs now on a 3.6 tip c4s 996 ,
I’m thinking verocam solenoid?
Why is it that Porsches that get tracked almost never experience IMS bearing failure?
How about a checkbook tool to keep these cars running
Thanks, great info.
