Fun fact, these versions of the console not only came with the game preinstalled, but also the DLC installed and available BEFORE it was made available on the eShop. This also means it's the only legal way to get the NSMB2 DLC after the eShop shutdown (assuming you haven't bought it already).

lil request... would you consider doing an unboxing of a limited edition dsi (normal, not LL or XL)? it doesn't get much love but is the ds I had as a kid. The pokemon black and white versions are some of the nicest limited edition designs imo

Japan always gets the best special editions. My favorite is the 2DSXL Animal Crossing edition. Simply gorgeous.
It came out in europe too, I have one. It's genuinely my fave themed console ever.

@@byte0117 I got the 3DS LL Monster Hunter 4 Limited Edition which is pretty sweet, but my absolute favorite has to be my New 3DS XL Hyrule Edition. That gorgeous goldish glossy look with Zelda theme.. I bought recently the new Tears of the Kingdom Switch and I am not that in love as I was with the 3DS predecessor.

I know from my experience with repairing 2DS systems that came with Mario Kart 7 that it didn't appear on the home screen when factory resetting them, but going into the eshop would have the game in the redownload software section (note: this is with no account added). So in theory, New Super Mario Bros 2 might be accessible from the eshop.
This was the case for me with a Tomodachi Life system as well

Yep but the shop closed.. might be convenient to hombrew the system and change the region + adding the game afterwards (using the rights sources) , because it’s the only way to enjoy theses games anymore since Nintendo don’t want to officially support them anymore.. but hey we won’t tell Nintendo that 😂

It had been used before. That firmware is 9.0+ which would mean it had to have been opened and updated since 9.0 came out in late 2014.

It's a golden Bullet Bill on the inside flap, not a rocket... The lettering on the cardboard insert is a product code for that part.
I never understood why Nintendo went back to region-locking the 3DS after the DS and GBA.
The game that it came with installed can be gained back through re downloading it from the eShop, witch you can still do even after the e shop closure

That you can, you can also change region. I have one just like this, I created an emuNAND with US region firmware, and it works brilliantly. Since it's an old 3DS, you can actually get everything working fine with the 3 SD card trick.
(And I didn't swap the motherboard, still the jpn one.)
The close-up shots showing the carbon fiber like finish really help do this unit justice.

You can tell if its been system reset by the activity log or the sd card
I bought a second hand 2DS XL and reset that. I could still re down load Mario Kart 7 which was pre installed.
Man that Crimson Red DS Lite brought back a ton of memories I had as a kid. I had a Crimson Red DS Lite for a while (until my younger infant brother threw it and broke it) and the crimson red was super cool

I wouldn't pick up a console like the Switch OLED at CeX, where the prices are basically around the same as a brand new product (unless maybe I had a lot of vouchers).
But for older consoles, I definitely prefer CeX to ebay etc. as while you may get lucky, paying less at various marketplaces, if the console develops a fault, you're out of luck. With CeX you get the 2yr warranty and while what CeX will do/offer changes over the 2yrs (30 Days, 6month and so on), you're paying for a guarantee on an often fairly old product. So I think is worth the extra cost.

Just bought the Japanese New 3DS LL Smash Bros edition. Thing is gorgeous, I region swapped it and have been playing it for weeks and taking it with me everywhere I go in my backpack. I really wish I played my 3DS more back in the day when it was popular because I love the streetpass functions but it is what it is.

I live in the US and I had the one at 0:33! I gave it to my younger sister a while back after I got the Galaxy N3DS model, though she barely touched it. I didn't do a good job taking care of it, in all honesty - it's got lots of cracks throughout the shell and is pretty banged up, though at least the screens are both still in good condition.

I got the Canadian version somehow since it’s a American one my mom bought me in 2015 and it broke back in 2017 sadly I got a new 3DS but I’m set on a mission to fix it one day.

This version of the 3DS is awful because they've used a cover that literally breaks down when heat is applied. So, where you hold it, it will dissolve and it means you can't re-sell it.

As somebody who worships the 3DS, you should appreciate the 3D effect a bit more.
all 3dses came with a 4gb (micro)SD card in the system due to how expensive nand storage was at the time, it was cheaper for nintendo to just include a free sd card
New Super Mario Bros. 2 had been out a while before these bundles came out. Many special 3DS systems didn't come bundled with games, including the Smash for 3DS ones. Really, they're more likely to give away a Mario game in a bundle after it has been available for a while than actually bundle new games with the systems, especially in the post-Iwata era.
the thing is we did get a 3ds xl nsmb special edition that imho looks far nicer than this one, it has mario on it with a mario level in the background with a red and gold finish similar to this one and it looks stunning, both honestly look incredible but that one looks better

Nintendo 3DS, one of the most amazing Nintendo product
It has defenotly been used, cause the ui of the ds is newer than what it came on originaly.
I always prefer the original XL over the new XL because the poison of the start and select buttons along with just the over all feel of the plastic is different. Also having the SD card easily accessible is a plus. Im ok with the new xl using a micro sd card but at least make it available without a screw driver. I literally bought the biggest card I could so I'd never have to open it up again. 32GB or Maybe 64 idk.
I put a 128gb sd in mine, if you set up FTP you can wirelessly transfer files back and fourth between your PC and your 3DS it's pretty easy to do

Honestly I like that not every system had a charger, when most of us had them already, less waste.
Well, now in the USB-C era, maybe so. But with propietary stuff like Nintendo chargers and other things that ain't no standard, it's just greediness. What is the chance when you buy a brand new handheld console, that you already do have a charger for it?
And even with USB-C, it's not always the case of "use any old wall brick" but you need to know what's compatible. Still they often do offer a cable but not the charger itself. If you do own a charger, there's a good chance that you do own a compatible cable too.
Also if you buy a device on a whim on a trip, it's sucky that you can't start using it right away. You do need to fetch a charger for it, or atleast a charging cord if it does not come with it. Again, in the days of USB-C not that big of a deal. But still a bummer.
Or you could just soft mod to region unlock.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 to this day leaves such a sour taste in my mouth... it was the epitome of the opposite of what Nintendo used to preach about releasing full titles without needing updates and microtransations and segmented DLC, feeling like 1/3 of the game that New Super Mario Bros. 1 was with its core aspect being around grinding and paying microtransactions to circumvent the grinding. Just awful.

I just found out about a rare Gameboy Color cartridge: the motorcycle manufacturer Aprilia was selling a cartridge meant to tune their bikes ECU, and run diagnostics, it has a cable interface running from the cartridge.
My research is incomplete but it appears they were selling the Gameboys with it through the 2000s, and the cartridges would be matching color translucent plastic.
I do believe it's called the Aprilia Ditech SR50.

You might be able to redownload the game from the Nintendo eShop if it hasn’t been transferred over to another system or hasn’t been tied to a Nintendo Network ID.

If you used super glue to reinforce the connection between the bottom screen frame and the black hinge part that the hinge axle connects to, the hinge would stop wabbling around. The black plastc part inside the right side of the hinge is only press fitted into the housing and it likes to become loose. If you glue it into the hinge, it'll stop it from getting loose and strengthen up the hinge. just make sure, you push the plastic connection piece firmly into the hinge after applying the glue so you can push the axle back into it. If you wanted to, you could apply athesive on every solid mounted part around the axle, so it doesn't round off the rest of the connecting parts. this is what I have done to mine and now the hinge feels solid and it firmly clicks into every resting position.

How difficult would swapping the internals of a JP 3DS to a US 3DS? I would really like to do that, but don't want to get involved with anything having to do with the top of the clamshell. If I can just switch the boards on the bottom and leave the top screen completely alone I might try this to get a fancy JP 3DS that'll play my games.
I bought a Japanese New 3DS LL to replace my 3ds, it's very simple and you do not need to switch boards. You simply homebrew your 3ds and then after that you region swap it. The only downside is you cannot transfer your data from your US 3ds to a Japanese 3DS even if you region swap it. I managed to transfer my Streetpass Mii Plaza save and that was enough for me, however for other games you will need to back them up using checkpoint and transfer them that way.

I actually was living in Japan when this released. I still have this model but I accidentally deleted the game and was unable to get it back. I shouldn't have messed around so much back then. lol
I’ve bought a couple used 3ds where the preinstalled game appeared to be wiped. But when I went into downloads I was able to reinstall for free.

USA got that "Canada" one too. I've got a sealed one in my collection
I always felt like they didn't include a charger with every 3DS system because of how they shared the same one as the DSi systems. Yeah, annoying for if it is a first handheld, but it likely saved Nintendo hundreds of thousands of yen. Really can't wait for that Crimson and Black unboxing; still have one, but beat up and only the bottom screen works.
