Fun fact: This song has kind of a phase 1 and a phase 2 which are stitched together by 14 unique transition segments and no I didn't write that wrong. They actually made 14 completely unique transitions to the track, just so that the music would blend together seamlessly from phase 1 to 2 and that's absolutely insane. This is also the reason that the version you listened to had some weird stops to it, because it also included some of the transition segments (the majority were left out though.).
Another fun fact: The composer Hirokazu Ando actually plays bass himself, and often records himself playing for the tracks he composes, so it's very possible that the bass in the song is actually being played by him and that's also really cool.

    • @danieljames1868
      @danieljames1868 Рік тому +21

      "Or"?
Nah, he's both of those things. He's an infant incarnation of the Space Between Spaces, of the Void from which all worlds arise and to which all worlds eventually return, of the Emptiness Beyond which wishes to devour All That Is.
He is also quite literally made of Friendship, and would and has done many things to protect those he considers friends. Even the dozens upon dozens of sapients he consumes regularly likely don't stay dead, because the last time Death tried to set up shop in Dreamland it ambushed Kirby, decisively defeated him, and then still got its rear soundly and decisively handed to it _by_ Kirby.

OH MY GOD, I was really hoping that you could listen to this song, is probably one of, if not, the best final boss theme in Kirby's history.
Now, for context, this song plays when you battle "Fecto Elfilis" an eldritch alien that nearly drove the Forgotten land people to extinction. The reason why the song is called "Two planets approach the Roche limit" is because as a last resort, Fecto Elfilis opens a hole in reality to use Kirby's home planet (Popstar) as a meteor.
Also, and this is an interpretation of mine, I believe the reason the singer did that whistle tone, is to sound like a synthesizer, to evoke that classic alien theme that you could hear in movies and Tv shows.
Anyway, you're one of my favorite UA-camrs, and I'm so happy for the 100K. Also, sorry if my grammar isn't the best.

The Star Conquering Traveller, is the song theme for the strongest enemy in the Kirby franchise (as today), it is a 9+ minutes suit with multiple phases, which actually possesses canonical lyrics.
(According to the official Twitter, said lyrics are the following, however, it is never explained where or how they fit in the musical composition)
Rise! Oh Dark Lord of Despair!
    Crush the stars!
    Lay waste to care! (x4)
Rise and cover the land in sorrows!
    May your symphony of emptiness
bring the end of all tomorrows!
Rise! Oh, Dark Lord of Despair!
    Crush the stars!
    Lay waste to care! (x4)
Upon your wing, dark judgment bring!
May your symphony of tragedy cause the end of everything!

Your note about the jazz riffs is very appropriate! They pop up in a few other songs on the soundtrack, such The Battle of Blizzard Bridge.
I'm glad you've begun to see the light on Kirby music 😉 As plenty of others have said already, the final bosses of this franchise go hard, and so does the music in them. Kirby is one of the franchises that does boss themes better than most others, in my opinion, of course. There's even an official operatic (or so I assume, you're the former opera singer here) arrangement of the final boss theme of Kirby Triple Deluxe.

This will always be one of my favorite songs of all time. It leaks a sort of profound sadness but also a feeling of grandness and elegance to match Fecto Elfilis and their story. It feels like a fight you don't want to have but have to anyway with the second part feeling even more like a struggle you're sort of reluctant to have but are more determined now because of how much the fight means and the stakes. I always found Fecto Elfilis to be a sort of sad character in a way having been locked in its own mind for so long (which I imagine is tortuous) and finally returning to do what it knows only to be stopped by the friend its better half bonded with. The whole fight floored me with grandeur on top of the fact I'm absolutely in love with Elfilis' design. Also, the name of the song comes from the fact Elfilis was going to crash Kirby's entire home planet into the one you're on.

Something about this final boss as well that I always appreciated is that it has a silhouette that is definitely intended to look vaguely like an angel. It has anatomy that resembles two enormous feathered wings, and it wields a long spear as a weapon that ends in a double helix that spreads out into wing-like shapes near the blade. There's definitely an undertone of some sort of "fallen angel" here that I think is reflected well in the music. The angelic choirs, the bells, the musical feeling of cosmos and falling stars, the organs being played at certain points, all leans into this I feel.

What I DIDN'T expect was for it to be for the character that the designers just said "What if we take Mewtwo, split it into two separate beings from the original cut movie version of childlike innocence and the other the tortured adult soul, combined it with The Tale of Desperuex, made it the catalyst for the extinction of the human race and bringer of the 6th Cataclysm, gave it a Halberd Spear and biblically accurate Angel wings fused with it's face, and the very mirror being and equal to Kirby in every way, shape, and form, all the while the part inside of it who was with you the whole game knew what was going on and fully aware that it haa to fight you and did everything it could to prevent this final battle from happening because they truly were your friend and you were the one and only person who showed it kindness and taught it the beauty of life and all the good it can contain. And yet now trapped inside their own mind and body they are forced to watch you battle them to the very finish and know that they have to lose in order for you to win even if that means you have to end their life. A life which they only now just finally saw the goodness and beauty in living and are now forced to watch as what could have been be thrown away by their own hand. And so they even take that one last little part of themselves that they know could defeat them, give it to you, and basically strap it the most destructive blunt force of power being a literal SEMI TRUCK and say "Don't hold anything back, finish me, and please take my dreams and explore this new world for me." as you must grant them their final wish and drive up the ruining cityscape collapsing in on itself in the destruction of the whole world being torn apart rains, crashes, burns, and explodes upwards and downwards all at the same time and drive straight into them to run them over."
Kirby just officially made the sad robot dog episode AGAIN actually CANON IN A REAL GAME WITH THE TRAVELING COMPANION THAT EVERYONE IMMEDIATELY DISTRUSTED AND DISLIKED SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY SEEMED SUSPICIOUS AND REMINISCENT OF WHAT ONLY HAPPENED 2 TIMES OUT OF OVER 5 BEFORE MEANING ALL THAT ANIMOSITY WASN'T JUST IN VAIN BUT REGRETFULL!
And they say Nintendo games are just baby games or whatever. Yeah sure bud, go back to your microtransactions'R'AssaultScandelsUs and blind violence shooters that actually are what give video games the bad image and stigma they have. I'll be taking my friend's dreams and exploring this new world for them because they couldn't do it themselves so they wanted me to live their life on for them.
And ya know what, it's rated E for everyone you savage animals.
    Welcome to the new world.

The name of the song makes perfect sense. Because near the final of the boss fight the boss opens a portal so that Kirbys Homeplanet Popstar and the Forgotten Land (Earth) approach. So Popstar is falling on Earth and most likely get destroyed whan it's crossing the roche limit, it even begins that parts of Dreamland are falling down.

Welcome to the Kirby music club, basically every final boss theme is a banger, but if I had to choose one to see on this channel it would definitely be "The Star Conquering Traveler".
You might even recognize it since it was the final boss theme of the Kirby game you did play. (Kirby: Star Allies)

If we're dipping our toes into the deep pool that is Kirby, you ought to check out the full arrangement for the final boss of Star Allies (which you might have already heard? As it sounds like you've played it). But specifically the one with Astral Birth Void.
It's a pretty long one but it's honestly incredible, one of the few songs that gets me a little misty-eyed when I hear it. Mostly I'm sure because I'm a long-time Kirby fan - it might be a bit less impactful if you're not. But it's beautiful either way.

KatFL really is a testament to music doing wonders for the stakes (See also: Roar of Dedede having no right to rock so hard). Kirby's all about fun times and sweet dreams, so his greatest enemies are nightmares, and therein always lies an element of absurdity. But in that absurd moment, Elfilis is a beautiful monster of existential dread, and it feels amazing to take them on.
If you ever do more Kirby, it would be fascinating to see what you make of CROWNED or Moonstruck Blossom as character themes. The latter especially, since it spawned an operatic aria cover (Eternal Dream).

I love your analysis. Kirby is very much a kids game... Until you hit the lore. Then we got the Lovecraft horror and souls-like melancholy, complete with death, trauma, and ruin... E for everyone!
Astral Birth Void actually even pulls a Soul of Cinder in it's music by hitting you with RAW nostalgia near the end with tons of meaning imbued to the added leitmotif. So much so, it's hard not to tear up if you realize what it is. I love when tracks do that.
    I strongly recommend that track.

So glad you finally listened to this! A lot of Kirby music is like this, especially final boss music, because things usually hit the fan towards the end. It's a game with a charming look but surprisingly deep lore and story. Kirby likes to hide story in pause menu text. I love it. But yeah, a lot of people looking from the outside don't really take Kirby seriously. The fanbase, on the other hand, knows otherwise. Check out more Kirby songs, I think you'll like them! That's not a problem of course, but it's always interesting when someone says something like "this is very adult for kirby" mainly because the entire series has this very same thing. There's a LOT this series has to offer that most outsiders don't know about, such as a constant evolving lore of kirby's universe, an interconnective world, and of course, final boss music that is award winning material at the end of EVERY kirby game. If you ever want to hear any other fan favorite kirby songs, 3 on the top of my head is CROWNED, Fatal Blooms in Moonlight/Moonstruck Blossom, and Zero Two. Well, an omnicidal psychic eldritch horror from the depths of space beyond the stars has escaped containment and is tearing the entirety of Earth apart to attack Kirby, while opening a rift to Kirby's planet _so it can telekinetically hurl the whole planet at him._
    So, yeah, kinda serious.

To answer the questions about "Who's Kirby?" Basically, Kirby is a positive energy of the heart of the void
Void in Kirby series is a sort of god entity that the entire universe originates from. Void consists of: Darkness, Void, Soul, Heart. So, for example Dark Matter is most likely negative darkness. Void Termina is negative heart. Fecto Elfilis (the main antagonist of Kirby and The Forgotten Land) most likely is negative soul. Meanwhile, Kirby is positive heart. All those creatures like Kirby that originate from Void are created out of a combination of strong positive or negative emotions. Also, basically all these creatures are a part of a god, The Void (they're technically not kids, but a part of the god that absorbed many emotions and fallen off)

A little late to the party here... Just wanted to say that if you enjoyed this, I highly suggest checking out more of Kirby's recent final boss themes. "Modern" Kirby's finales have just been one home run after another for me. The songs' titles are a bit iffy since I think some of the names by which they're most commonly known are fan titles and not official ones. Anyway, I've listed the titles below
    CROWNED
Fatal Blooms in Moonlight (AKA Moonstruck Blossom)
    The Star Conquering Traveler
Planet Robobot's final boss theme is a bit hard to peg since it's three or four separate tracks. The names I recall are: Mind in a Program, Virtual Space Manipulator, and Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection. Very unsure about the second title being correct as I write this.
Edit: The second song isn't Virtual Space Manipulator, it's Intermezzo Without A Leader.
    Anyway, happy listening!

Act II: Imperfect Hatred is better than Act I: Infinite Hyperdeath in my opinion, but both of them have such a unique blend of leitmotifs and themes, which make them a joy to hear. Hakita is a one man army, designing and composing the entire game and score on his own.
