A friend was having a backyard BBQ at a relatives house in California. Glenn lived next door and peeped over the fence to say hello to everyone. What a stand up guy. He is so loved and missed. We need him more than we want him and we (his fans) want him for all time.

Glen is my favorite entertainer, my first 8 track, at 13yo, bought with my grass cutting money. I still listen to him on UTube nearly everyday. Absolutely LOVE listening to his guitar playing! Session player and his upbringing is ALL so interesting! Thanks James Taylor! A good guitar man himself. 😊

Jeffrey Prokopowicz Oh that's very true! Glen made it look easy! He also made the guitar look simple! I miss him so and the awful way he had to go brings tears to my eyes - as I'm watching my husband, who is the exact age, disappear right in front of me. So cruel and so sad.

Jimmy Webb's inspiration for the lyric came while driving through Washita County in rural southwestern Oklahoma. At that time, many telephone companies were county-owned utilities, and their linemen were county employees. Heading westward on a straight road (arguably Country Road 152) into the setting sun, Webb drove past a seemingly endless line of telephone poles, each looking exactly the same as the last. Then, in the distance, he noticed the silhouette of a solitary lineman atop a pole.

Thanks for this explanation. It makes perfect sense when you think about snow and ice buildup on the telephone wires, cables, above ground, that could snap or break under the heavy “overloads” of built-up ice. I suppose the linesmen had the duty to break off the larger loads of ice, and do splice repairs to keep communications available in rural places.

mavericktn Trust me when I say that Glen was at the very top. He was personally requested by everyone from Elvis to Sinatra, he was a Beach Boy when one of the Wilson Brothers was away, Johnny Cash requeseted him, I'm sure if we did the research we could make a very long list of "A listers" who had Glen playing and/or singing with, but mostly playing. Glen was one of the famous "Wrecking Crew", in fact I'm pretty sure he was the most popular when it came to picking out a single person. I thought it was very apropos that the members of The Wrecking Crew did the accompaniment for Glen on "I'm not gonna miss you". If you haven't seen the documentary either via dvd or on Netflix, it's at the very end, and it truly does show the respect that ALL musicians had for Glen. To think he started learning to play the guitar when he was 4, and never learned to read music. He rarely had to hear anything twice before playing it in any key. Also had perfect pitch. Who would have guessed a star from a tiny little dot on the map of Arkansas. He truly left his mark on the world of music.

Prior to his solo career Glen Campbell was part of the Wrecking crew....the studio musicians responsible for the songbook of the 60's and 70's.... So many songs that we all know, yet those musicians are never credited for their work. I strongly recommend the film "the Wrecking Crew" a documentary playing on Netflix and of Course James is in the film... Music Appreciation 101

James Taylor's Facebook page just alerted us to a one-minute snippet of James telling an interviewer . . .
“I often tell my kids that the difference between my upbringing and theirs was that we didn't have the distractions that people have today: You could have a 'long thought' - you know, without it being interrupted.” Citing as an example, Mr. Taylor, who turns 72 this day (3/12/2020) recalled those precious moments of his childhood ....
“Long weekend afternoons, spent lying on the rug outside my parents' bedroom, listening to the record player playing these great Broadway musical soundtracks” [and] “one of the cast albums we listened to was SOUTH PACIFIC, a beautiful, beautiful musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein, with some great songs in it: 'There ain't Nothin' Like a Dame' - great tune! 'I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair' - 'Some Enchanted Evening' . . . ”
Happy birthday, James. Have we told you lately that we love you?
I refrained last night from posting a reflection on James Taylor's perfect 'covers.' This seems as good a time and place as any, to share a particular favorite:
Don't you love it when young fans armed with guitars, get to perform their own 'covers' of favorite songs by James? I'd just been thinking of his own take on Glen Campbell's signature song, Wichita Lineman. Just as an aside this great song was welcomed by students of the Great American Songbook for a melody so long-legged with beautiful intervals, you don't notice it doesn't have a bridge. (Those middle parts that James-the-songwriter does so well.)
On an August night three summers ago, after Glen Campbell's death had just been announced, our favorite living singer-songwriter was ready with a beautifully-arranged cover of Glen Campbell's most lovely ballad - a song composed (words & music) by the great Jimmy Webb. This song was Mr. Webb's favorite of his 'musical children' and . . . well, bet he loved to see James Taylor do it justice.
Like all great 'orchestral' arrangements for 'covers' of famous songs, this one alludes in subtle ways to the original by Glen - yet allowing James to put his own stamp on things.
In keeping with the shared hope that loved ones who've left us, look down smiling on tributes such as these: James doffs his cap, at song's end, bows his head and looks heavenward with a smile of thanks.
Thanks for sharing, James -- and Happy Birthday! Celebrated this day at Sinatra Family - forum - "Siriusly Sinatra" - MY FAVORITE MOMENT, YOURS TOO? sinatrafamily.com/forum/showthread.php/50225-My-Favorite-Version-%28yours-too-%29?p=1285788#post1285788

A wonderful tribute, James. I liked Glen Campbell (and almost every song Jimmy Webb wrote), but he grew even more in my estimation through the way he dealt with his own "long goodbye!"By the way, we couldn't help but be blown away by how strong your voice still is when we saw you at the Wells Fargo Center, and just as strong several weeks later at Blossom! I'm sure you must be ready to give it a rest as your 2017 tour comes to an end! Thanks for all you've given us, Russ & Ginger Bishop
