  • I Made A Terrarium For Some Tiny Snails
    These snails popped up unannounced in another terrarium of mine and I noticed that they didn’t eat the plants inside! In this video I’ll show you how I made them their very own terrarium! The snails are garlic snails and are about the size of my pinky nail.

    Excellent video, and your content is wonderful! The only thing I would recommend is that when you're saying the plant names or such, it would be helpful to get a subtitle or such written on the video.
    Also have a question: how much routine maintenance would a terrarium like this require? Would it have to be dismantled for cleaning at all, or do the springtails take care of that?

      If you press "c" on the keyboard, the video's closed captions will become visible.
      Once every 2 months you may need to trim the plants and wipe the glass on the inside. And you spay a bit of water AND feed the snails twice a week (tiny portions). Springtails only prevent rotting and molding.

    Just a hopeful suggestion for people who are trying to follow along. If you could put the name of the plant on screen and even better down in the description somewhere that I can copy and paste it that would be incredibly helpful.
    Often people say the scientific name of a plant but because people pronounce things different and nobody speaks Latin I often can't understand what plant UA-camrs are saying and trying to look it up is hard.

    What gorgeous little creatures! I am wondering if I could supply a bit of calcium if I added some crushed eggshell? I bake my eggshells at a very low temp (as low as my oven can go with the door propped, around 180 F/82 C) and then crush them to a fine powder. I've used it in other things but it ought to work for snails as well, yes?

    Love your videos, especially this one and the one with the small pink dragon millipedes.
    My intention is to recreate something like this, but I was wondering if you had a full and complete list of terrarium plants your living inhabitants don't munch on, in your experience?
    Sounds like mini Ficus species are a good idea, but are there any more "tree-like" looking plants I could use that won't be eaten?
    Thank you

    • @stancexpunks
      @stancexpunks 9 місяців тому

      Plants produce oxygen, therefore there is no need for air holes. However, in another video he says every once in a while he will remove the lid for about 30 min so the terrarium can get some water fresh air which will improve the longevity of the terrarium.

    Nice! I discovered some garlic snails in my paludarium. They must have come in on a plant as I didn't intentionally add them. They were eating the same food as my isopods so I figured they'd be OK there. They have stayed a fairly stable population. Question about the cuttlebone, I put mine in whole (it's in a 284 l tank). Do they need to be ground for them to be used by the snails and isopods? Question about the spring tails; I can't keep them alive. I either lose the source container to mites or they just crash. They also don't seem to last in my terrariums, though isopods do. Mine either come on calcium clay or horticultural charcoal - I've never seen them in substrate like yours. Can you tell me where you get yours and if you have any tips for keeping them alive?

I want to create a new habitat for them but they created a tunnel system in the old soil and its like quick sand. how would you approach such a transfer? i just dont know how much is going on in there but its like all they know their whole life so idont want to just jump in and destroy that, but the have out grown where they live.

    Have you any problems with this snails in other terrariums? How fast they population grows?

    • @andreyromashchenko8967
      @andreyromashchenko8967 2 роки тому +1

      From what I observed, each snail lays 4 eggs per/mo. Half of babies survive. I went from 6 snails to 50 in 4 months. Same 6 snails were laying eggs this whole time. Young snails don't lay eggs.
      Population grows fast, *BUT once the number is high:*
      You can slow it down by keeping the terrarium near the shaded window. In cold months, when the temperature lowers to 60F, they will hibernate. In hot months when it's 80F they will aestivate. Under those conditions (60F&80F) they don't reproduce. And the weakest 10% will die from starvation during hibernation & aestivation.
      PLUS, they can only lay eggs in slightly-moist soil. Sand & rock damages and dries the eggs. Too much water drowns all the babies.
      AND they die from greasy and gluten food (something to look out for).

      @@whattheduenas Hi, sorry about late reply. I found the ones I have in someone's home, when I was Taking care of plants while the owner went on vacation. So, it was a complete accident, the owner never even knew about them.
      If I had to look for more, I would ask in a plant shop, where they have orchids, because that's how those snails get to the US, with the orchid transportation from subtropical countries.
      Also many states have their own native snails. That would be ideal, since non-native snails should not be introduced to the environment. Meaning once you have those "orchid snails", you can't release them.

      Those are plant-shop-pests. If you know anyone who has a plant shop and orders from other countries, that person may stumble upon "orchid snails" from time to time. That's what those most likely are, orchid snails. And that's how those end up in places like US, by transporting plants.
