What I Learned Playing Congas at Church

- I started playing church gigs around the same time I started playing congas professionally. And I learned some important lessons from this experience, one of which is to change up your pattern. This video gets into the ways you can make variations on a pattern and some of the tips that I picked up playing in church and beyond.

I really appreciate your church video.I can remember back in a day when I used to play too much ,too loud or just flat out step on the drummers fills or groove. When first started in church ,I had no idea of the most important aspect of my job .Add color and texture,but most of all, honor the Lord and that meant no show boating. Your advice and skills are awesome and very helpful.

I could not agree more. And you brought up another lesson I learned playing at church - music is a form of prayer and that it’s not about me as an individual … it’s about the gifts we share and how we show our thanks to the Lord.
I have been playing congas and other hand percussion at church for a few yrs now. We usually have a regular kick drummer who is the best. Since mid July he has been unavailable and I am the only percussion with an exceptional Sunday when our sound guy fills in. I like being the “back-up, the supplemental” guy to add to the rhythm section. I don’t like being the only percussion. I do like the 6/8 patterns, however the songs we do in 3/4 or 6/8 are very light on the percussion. I can apply them to the cajon playing that I do. Pretty White Bread where I live we don’t do much gospel music per se.

Great to hear a fellow believer, and conga player, playing the congas to worship through music. The Ralph MacDonald, Errol Crusher Bennett, calypso pop/rock/jazz West Indian sound goes well with gospel as well. Keep on worshiping my man, you have skills.

Yes! I play the cajon at church, but my pastor switched up to congas--at least for a while--since I'm about 7 months pregnant and it got a bit cumbersome to play the cajon haha. I've been watching your videos in preparation for Sunday! I was going to message you asking if you had tips for praise/worship music and found this specific video! Thank you for sharing your talent to help rookies like me! May the Lord bless you even more abundantly than you can imagine! If you have any other tips regarding praise/worship music, I'm all ears! (1) Keep it simple (2) listen to the lyrics and speaking to make sure your part doesn’t take away (3) like the video demonstrates, consider small ways to change up a pattern for different sections in a song or service (4) most importantly feel the Holy Spirit as you take in the music and the shared experience of the whole church. … email me if you need anything.

Our church is starting out and the music ministry growing--the only experience I really had with percussion growing up is that my Dad is an amazing drummer and has been playing a set (he's had his original mod-orange Ludwigs since the 60s) for over 60 years. I, myself, never really picked it up, but have always loved music: clarinet, keyboard, singing, etc. To make a long story short, our church praise team started out using a lead singer and musical tracks, then added our piano player, but God wanted to do more! They needed a percussionist, so I said, "Okay, Lord, I'm here... use me! But please teach me in the process, too because I have no idea what I'm doing!" One day, a cajon was dropped off to my house (never having played one before) and the next week we had one practice as a team and were playing together that Sunday! God is good and I have learned to set my perfectionism aside to let go so I'm out of the way of what the Holy Spirit wants to do. I just tried the congas for the first time on Tuesday night and it is taking some practice to figure it all out and override my instinct to try to play them like the cajon instead of experimenting and appreciating their unique sound. I'm excited for what the Lord has planned for our worship team and thankful for your help, encouragement, and for sharing your knowledge in these videos! We still play with music tracks at this point (which can be a bit tedious since I instinctively try to make my sound match that of the track--even if it's a drum set), but I believe that we will soon get away from them as our ministry grows! Praise God! :D
