In college my professor always said(in regards to film festivals or script writing competitions) "if you can't put the effort in to follow the requested standards, then how do they know you followed the rest of the requirements? They don't care if your project goes in the bin, they have hundreds of submissions. Yours could be the best most artistic piece of art ever arted, but that doesn't matter."
Couldn't have said it better myself. Had a very hard prof during college myself that drilled this mindset into our heads. Still sticks with me to this day. If you are gonna skip out on the basic rules, what other stuff might you try to cut corners on?

@Nicole Ham Nothing he said sounds bitter, its just blunt and truthful. As someone who is reasonably successful in the 3D Art world, I couldn't agree with him more.
You can argue that FPS is easy to fix if Clint doesn't use the audio, but everything else is not. And if audio does get used, resampling can do weird unintended things. Quality is compromised and it's all avoided by a couple of simple steps before you hit the render button.
I'm not a 3D artist, but I understand video standards. And it blows my mind that so many clearly talented artists would go through all the effort and time to create their art, yet ignore such simple technical details regarding the required format specs. That's crazy.
This is how it is in the professional industry. Follow directions and follow protocol and you're going to be two steps ahead of everyone else. These details matter when it comes to production and the limitations are set for very specific reasons. Be specific.

There’s an idea among plenty of artists that you should challenge the norm and the standards. Which while yeah I think one should, there’s times and places for them. Submitting something in a way that doesn’t make someone do a needless amount of work to adjust isn’t one of those times or places lol
Good on ya man for holding contestants to the specs, and showing exactly how you are QCing the submissions. This is the level of accuracy and attention to detail required in the industry, no reason this should be different 😄
Thanks for posting this video! Always good to reinforce good workflow habits. My animation professors hammered us on specs every assignment. If you can't sweat the small stuff you won't be trusted to sweat the big stuff. Hurts to think that some great artists got rejected on a job application because their render was a fraction off the specs the client was asking for but thems the breaks.
I am SO exited to see the results from this render challenge! Your challenge series has to be my favorite on this platform! Getting to see all of the creativity really gives me a boost in motivation!
@@NFCloud not really, but they do utilize a lot of kitbashing and assets from previous work, also a lot of bought assets, not everybody wants to design and model everything from scrats. also you'd be surprised how fast some people work.

And it's not like it's a bunch of technical requirements either. Just 3: framerate, resolution and length. In a video montage that's supposed to have identical motion this is super important to have seamless transitions.
It's so important to adhere to set standards, and it's important to practice that in life. Especially working within technology! I don't have time to participate, but I appreciate this spotlight on why it's important (since you set the standards!).
those clips where 1 off might come from them using frame#1 as the starting point (rather than at 0). then they put frame 144 as end point and call it a day, not realizing the total frames rendered will only add up to 143.
One day i will catch one of these in time and get a 2d animation in that looks 3d. i love seeing these challenge montages man. so many great artists out there.

I missed yet another deadline, ugh, spent that last couple of weeks in and out of the hospital, missing time from work, and just got the new job too, dealing with coming back from a concussion, sucks. But I did learn a ton @pwnisher that I did do. You know what's crazy, I took my unfinished render and ran it through gen 1 by runway and got some pretty amazing results, I don't know if that would have been allowed in the challenge but the fact that I was able to turn my Mad Max themed render into something that looks like it came straight out of Mad Max by using AI image style transfer to video, I don't even have to do all the work that Niko and the guys had to do when they made rock paper cross blades! Thanks again Clint I still got out of this what I wanted to and that's to learn as much as I can at the end of the day that's what I look to get out of these challenges, so thanks man I can't wait to see the rest of the renders, I've already seen a ton of awesome ones good luck to everyone and keep crushing y'all
This is relatable for everybody that had to deal with a strict teacher/professor. My heart sank when he disregarded all of those submission. I've been in the same situation before with a final project at the end of the deadline. Kinda harsh but rules are rules, it's like a job you have to properly do it or else no pay in this case no submission.
Only reason I barely do render challenges or collabs.. : you set everything up correctly…it looks exactly as requested in the program and in the file details, you hit render and… the final render after 3-12 hours has missing frames or slightly different resolution or even worse … it is just green or black screen
So which one is it @pwnisher. 120 frames or 144, as you threw out all the ones that have less or more than 144 frames into the pit, but then at @3:49 you show on screen the frame count has to be 120.
Would love to learn how to render/animate like this. I have no idea how to start. At first it´s a little overwhelming and i dont know where to start. I wonder how others got into learning. I finally have a PC good enough 😅

I don't even know how to render something like that (the top 100 3D vehicle video) I just knew an intermediate amount of modelling and tried to do a simple animation (in which it didn't rendered), not to mentioned the damn textures (basically making my Laptop barely alive) So....any tips that you recommended? Besides I need to get out of the thing called "Tutorial Jail"
Hey what are the rules on including things that aren't your creation? Such as image textures from the internet, models from quixel megascans, or animation from Mixamo?

Haha, I am the editor of a big dashcam channel, so I have to do deal with loads of garbled footage. =) You wouldn't believe, how many clips come in with a very messy framerate I am starting to wonder, if it's actually the cameras recording bad framerates. We are talking about every 5th frame or something being the same is the one before, so actual doubled frames. It works for automatic tracking, but it sucks for manual tracking and prevends smooth slomos. Often I have sat there and manually removing doubled frames and re-render. When producing own videos, it's very important to me that it's properly made. My purely private videos are way better, than they need to be. Anyway, since I also work in 3D, maybe one day I'll be part of such a challenge. =D
Hello clint ! I finally composited my work and imported it to Davinci Resolve and the fps is okay frames, count is okay, resolution is okay but the only problem is formate shows as Quicktime even it's a MP4 file and Video Codec shows as H.264 Main L4.0. Is it good to submit ?
My C4D project was set to 24 fps with 1-120 frames, yet when I import and export in and out of After Effects, the framecount is only 92, really strange and I have no clue why it's happening.
I've been considering enter these challenges some day. Just wondering, is it allowed to use shaders, HDRI's and assets from the internet or shall everything be made from the bottom?
I have a question: I downloaded the starter files and the unreal file won't open. they say it requires 522. Does this mean the Unreal 5.22? Do we even have it?

@@NicoleHam following basic instruction is a necessity in any field.
As harsh as it is, it's totally understandable. One man fixing 100 renders is much worse than 100 people each fixing 1 render.
Add to that the fact that fixing any of the problems with just the end result is a lot harder than setting the right parameters before rendering.

I didn't know the max frame rate was 144 until this video. I submitted last challenge with 120 frames. I was in the pit of despair all along.
That was for Moving Meditations, frame count for Endless Engines (the current challenge) is 120.
Oh pewwww thanks for clarification. The last challenge I submitted was infinity journey with 120 frames.
I'm actually curious how people frame rate, and resolution size etc, can get messed up when isn't it part of the original template file?
Now i need to know the difference in between Frames, Framerate and FPS, and what affect it does when i put 60 FPS clip on a 24 FPS sequence.

3:43 misprint! Not 120, but 144 frames
the examples were from the last challenge, which had a 144f requirement. 120f is the proper count for the current challenge. Sorry to confuse.

are you sure you're not converting framerate in ae by accident?

check the interpret footage(right click your footage on project panel) change it to 24fps too, usually AE make it 30fps in default,
