This game has turned me against so many reviewers I used to listen to lol. I played it, thought it was a pinnacle of gaming art, and now when I see negative reviews on it all I can think is "if I listened to you I would have missed the masterpiece"
I get it, it's all subjective, yet I still cannot understand how gamers don't universally love this. It's so beautiful and well executed.

I feel like some people don't get it. They are seeking some fun lighthearted or challenging experience only focusing on "oh its a ball and it can go woop and zoom". This is a piece of art though. There are lots of people that are so into their everyday mundane life that can't just let things like this sink in and contemplate a bit, slow down and just enjoy the flow. It's meditative and beautiful.

I was following this game for a while. I played it, and paying attention to the story and the emotionally influencing elements in gameplay mechanics I questioned whether or not it was designed with PTSD in mind. I cried, I felt my stomach lurch as I decided to max out the gravity drive into an accelerated freefall, and I felt a good amount of wonder exploring the environments. I also completed the game in under two hours. It's wonderful, but begs for some expansion on a really solid base game. Thanks for reviewing it!

Underwater, outer space, past the speed of sound, through lava, snow, rainstorms, and more. This game is so exciting and keeps me smiling the entire time I have the controller in my hand. Although some textures are hit and miss, the overall graphics are amazing and set a perfect ambient of being lost in mysterious worlds! :-)

Plot was easy. Astronauts on Jupiter had a fire 🔥, blew up the ship, and killing the crew. A year later, Earth created the sphere to go through time and space to create a wormhole into the past. Once there, the sphere was able to give the crew enough time to eject. Boom, mind blown

This incredibly refreshing and beautiful game was an easy day one purchase for me.
The story is unusual and hard to follow at first, but I really do think the developer intended that vagueness to reinforce the feeling of becoming and existing as an intrinsic part of something truly alien. I can't remember it exactly, but there's a line in one of the flashbacks about resisting the urge to "figure out" a technology that was clearly beyond human comprehension. I felt like that connected the feelings of "what the frick is going on" solidly to "just feel the craft around and within you and make yourself go".
[SPOILERS AHEAD!] My favorite planet is definitely the one where you don't have any power and have to use your gravity doodad with the desolate hellscape to get to your next gate. [SPOILERS END]
Exo One also pairs really well with an older title called "Venineth". If you haven't tried that one yet, it's a slower and more puzzle-centric kind of game, but it has the same feeling of other-ness.
Exo One felt like a game from the future and I would love to play more titles like it.

Nice review KC! I was really impressed with this when i played the demo in a Steam indie showcase a while back, and bought it today as soon as it became available. I'm enjoying it - its chilled as heck, and traversal is simple, but also nuanced. A trippy, relaxing game to nip into every now and then!

  • @JonnyfromElma

From what I could gather, the plot is similar to something like Interstellar or Donnie Darko. It seems like a team of 5 astronauts were the first to fly on jupiter through the use of alien spacecraft. All of them died while trying to leave the planet. Somehow, one of the astronauts was reborn as the original spacecraft (I think?) and travelled through space and time to save the 5 astronauts.
I finished it twice and that's really all I could guess at what happens.

From what I could tell, this story is about a (from what I can infer) a loved one of a astronaut from the Jupiter Flyer mission that was apparently chosen to fly this air/land craft on the anniversary of the loved ones death in the JF accident. But from what I can tell the (Spoilers) You were decommissioned and that’s the part of the story that you have no control of the craft except the grav drive. But it goes on once you complete that mission you go onto a frozen planet and the craft will lose all power until a secondary craft appears and apparently ‘revives’ you, it also says that there is a ‘hanger in the desert’ I still have no clue what that means. But once that is done, it then takes you to a cloud dominated planet and there the secondary craft (I can presume sacrificed itself) recreates the universe by causing a 2nd big bang and to where you are somehow able to save the team of the JF. (This is my thoughts and conclusion, I may be missing something not thought of before. I’m not perfect ya know.)

The story is actually quite coherent and very interesting!
You play as a commander who was involved in a mission to explore Jupiter. Your team was engulfed in some sort of massive energy spike while in Jupiter's atmosphere, and you are the only survivor. After this incident, Earth received an alien signal with the blueprint for the Exo One. You become the pilot of this vessel, convinced you are the only one who can "bring them back" (your lost crew). Throughout the game, you encounter this "non-causal object" (meaning time displaced, eg. time traveller), which at the end of the game you figure out is actually you, but in the meantime it shows you that it is possible to travel back in time (exactly what you need to save your crew). You chase the object trying to catch up to it, but it always is just out of reach. The game ends with a very climactic chase between you and the object, where you finally catch up, and relive the events of the failed Jupiter mission, except this time you intercept the energy spike and save your crew. A very enjoyable experience, and the story is top-notch! Definitely one of my favorite sci-fi games to relax at the end of the day.

didn't play it myself and watched just some of the game play but my understanding is that there are 2 ships. the second chases the first when it finally finds or catches up to it... that in a way at the very end is able to manipulate the first ship just enough for it to eject its 5 crew to safety... which would have never happened if the second had not been involved. whether there is some sort of time mechanic or not, i can't say. but the reason i watched your review was to see if the pilot of the second ship ever come home... because i feel he didn't. not because he didn't want to but that he always felt that it was his destiny to be on jupiter... and with this ship he doesn't ever have to come home or as the man tells the boy... on jupiter you'd never touch the ground... and this boy wants to fly forever. saving the 5 i feel was both his excuse and his duty.... but until i can find more definite things about the story or game... that is what i have to go by :D peace.

Yeah I wasn't too much of a fan of flashing Jupiter and astronaut
photos either. But the environments and movement mechanics were sublime. SPOILERS
From what gathered they sent a manned (dumb) flyer mission to
Jupiter and it blew up. Clara was propably daughter of one of them and
conviniently aliens said "hey, have a space ball schematics" so humans
built a space ball and Clara stole it from a desert shed to go on a space ball adventure
trip that ended up in a black hole that sent her back in time and that
somehow hit the eject on the Jupiter flyer so the crew got rescued but
now Clara is stuck flying on Jupiter with the space ball.

I got a totally different story out of it, to be honest. I don't think Clara is "you" piloting the ball. I think Clara's husband was one of the men on the Jupiter mission. But I got the impression that the crew on the flyer were communicating with someone (probably) in an orbiter above, similar to the moon landings. I think Clara's husband was the one in the orbiter, and that's who you are piloting in the ball. My interpretation of the story is that some alien energy source went off during the flyer mission and destroyed the flyer while Clara's husband watched safely from orbit. But there was nothing he could do for them, so he had to leave them behind and return home alone. Humanity receives this alien signal that are basically the blueprints for an advanced spacecraft, which they build. But upon testing it fails to work, so it gets shelved and stored in some remote facility in the desert. Clara's husband can't shake the feeling that he can still save his friends and that this spacecraft isn't working because it's meant specifically for him. He says goodbye to his wife and essentially steals the experimental craft and takes off with it, which is where the gameplay begins. At the end, he travels through a wormhole and arrives back at the moment of the flyer mission and is able to save his friends, but in doing so he strands himself in Jupiter's atmosphere with no surface on which to gain speed and escape.
The real question is, what happens to the past version of himself who is in the orbiter and now returning home with his friends?

Same as you.. This is my zen game.. I just let loose a nice playlist of my fav trippy music OR turn on some stories on YT, turn down the game volume and just sore around in the skies.
(My dream game is an open world game where you are a bird, the NPCs, animals etc populating the vast worldspace have their own complicated Ai and carry out there lives, form relations, work, enjoy holidays etc and as close to realistic as technically possible.. You don't really need to do anything other than just fly around, explore, take in the graphics, the sights, etc and just observe the world spinning around you.. preferably medieval setting OR victorian era)

When I first started playing I was like wtf is this I didn’t know what to do r half an hour. But finally when I understood the objective I hit a blinker got high as hell turned up the volume and just vibed through the entirety of the game. The feeling this game gave me was so sensational. Except the ocean world that one gave me the chills literally because of how deep and dark that place got. But over all this game was an absolute master piece🤌🏿

@@larrygrant4999 lol, bruh I thought I was about to be playing some kind of sci-fi flight simulator and that's it, I didn't see any gameplay of this before I launched it I just went into it while high and was soooo confused 💀. Like why am I playing as a ball rolling across a desert. Then when I figured out it turns into a disk and that I could get it to fly, it blew my mind. 🤣
I guess I was right that it was a sci-fi spacecraft, but I had no idea it was like this 🤣

The story is actually pretty simple, and it was easy to understand for me.
    [Spoiler Alert]

@@Jasondog375 What, to catch up to the non-causal object? I'd imagine it's possible, I'm just not good enough to do it lol. The story is basically what I've managed to put together from the various cutscenes and dialogue throughout the game. I haven't spoken with the dev or anything, but this is what makes the most sense to me.

There is a story to this game and maybe it's because it's 2AM, but the tone you address that in irks me... Look up "gravity time dilation" and then keep in mind that the audio is being played in reverse when characters talk. Not having the story crammed down your throat in an 'easily digestible' way doesn't make a story bad or non-existent. You're missing it or not understanding the story that's given. This game is a piece of art given from a perspective and only that perspective. No additional notes and no other perspectives added. And yet even once you're helpless, you push on alone up the hill. In the end you succeed. And I'm sorry but I won't ruin the story by giving the why or the goal. And not the how or anything... Just think about it more carefully. Because there is a story and it's beautiful.
