They get even cheaper if you can run a cut off wheel and a mig welder lol. That's if you care. I drove an 80 with NO floor boards for about 4 years. I love working on cars but that truck got me through college and the only thing I did was change the plugs and wires (I just wanted big yellow plug wires), changed the oil in the 350 to 15w40 - even in Kansas winter, put aluminum sheet metal where the the floorboards should be (not bolted down just kinda... set there), replaced the radiator cap which cured all of my overheating and I didn't question or look into it harder, and hit the quadratjet with a plastic mallet for some reason (I really don't have a good answer for that it just felt like the right thing to do and it worked, no more bogging under quick load). They're cheap as hell if you are willing to look and buy them beat to hell. For the record, I do have an 87 that I'm constantly working on and it's absolutely taken care of right with a full rebuild, no rust, stripped and painted back to doeskin tan and slightly modified to just be better. It's still a "daily" standard old beater but it's definitely something I can take to a car show. Rn I'm prepping for a 5.3 swap from my 400,000 mile 2000 Suburban that I got when I was living in Montana. I'm sure it'll be fine.

Hey brother, I'm the proud owner of the last 1998 GMC 1500 that came off the assembly line. The last OBS ever produced was a single cab long box in the 5 L V8 setup with an automatic transmission. She has a manufacturer date of 04/98!
Thank you so much for talking about how easily you can acquire parts for OBS. I've only put about $3,000 worth of Maintenance into it over the 6 years that I've owned it. We gave her a full block and rad flush last year. Runs like new!

The OBS and Bullnose trucks are considered two different generation trucks. As well as the 87-91 (bricknose) the bullnose fords were basically all carbureted until 85/86 where you could get a 302 with EFI as an Option. 87-91 had a few carb motors such as the 460 in early years and I believe the 351 still had the high output option which gave a different cam and 4bbl Holley from factory. The zf5 speed and e4od were also introduced in the bricknose era. 92-96(97 heavy duty trucks) had a lot of modern equipment such as EFI standard on all engines except the IDI. 4 speed auto matics were the main transmission choice but you could still get the zf5/m5od or a c6 auto matic. I think the granny 4 speed was still an option as well just rarely used. Anyway the names of the body style indicate the year 80-86 bullnose, 87-91 bricknose, 92-97 aeronose or OBS.

The truck sat for 8 years and acquired it for free. Now i drive it every day and have a 351 I also happened to acquire for free sitting in the garage awaiting a rebuild.

Crazy seeing a first gen ram on a list like this XD, I can %100 agree mine has been a BREEZE to work on. The 318 is a stout little engine and I have no issues getting on the highway or doing anything else. These things also had AMAZING frame protection, my frame is still rust free 40 years later. The biggest thing I'd say about them though; if your in the market for one, get one a litttttle bit older. Mine is an 84 and is FULL of emissions equipment which sucks but its not the worst part, thats the vacuum stuff. The vacuum lines on these trucks are MADDENING. But otherwise its been an amazing truck. They really were great at just suiting every need. They make great muscle/street trucks, they have the same engines as the classic muscle cars so you can drag race them easily, the Cummins can pull a house down if you point at it, and the slant 6 is more than enough for a weekend/daily cruiser. Sorry for this long comment I just love my truck XD

Okay so fair warning with the first gen tundra, the frames are well known to rust out. There is still active recall on them though that you can the frames replaced for free. I still see it to this day.
BUT holy hell they are reliable. My v6 2WD 5 speed got up to 580k just between me and my grandfather.
    Downsides:
    Slow as hell
    Meh on mpg
LBJ’s are prone to fail if not replaced oem
    Upsides!
    Still cheap
    Still fun
No rust are still out there!
Tons of parts available and very beginner friendly.

I’ve got a 2001 Toyota Tundra that, when I first acquired it, only had ~170,000 miles on it. It’s an automatic that hasn’t had transmission problems, since I’ve had it anyway, and it’s 4.7L V8 is a powerhouse that keeps on trucking no matter what! I’ve put a little over 30,000 miles on it myself since then and it does me justice. It has always been quite rusty underneath, but it’s hardly a problem compared to how far it’s gone for my sake. I take good care of it and it pays me back with being very reliable. I know that it’ll rust out long before its engine ever fails me, but hopefully that day is long off. I hope to find a relatively cheap, simple but tough, and (most importantly) reliable truck of its caliber before that day comes.

The 440 was in some of the W150s or D150s but was really popular in the Ramchargers. If you find one with an LA 318 like I have, you won't have but 175 hp stock, but it is considered one of the most dependable engines ever made and were made to be workhorses. Some people even attached snow plows during the winter. Their reputation is highly favored in the automotive world.
If you purchase a W150, especially mid to late 80's, you will have tremendous trouble finding parts that were not streamlined across multiple models. Water pumps, power steering pumps, and and some of the most common components are fine. But if you need to find something that's not normal wear or finding certain specs may be troublesome.

About time to restore my 75 C20 that I bought in 1980 for $800 with right at 100k on the clock. It does need the typical rusted out cab corners and rocker panels which I don't understand why they rotted out. Never run in salt or weird stuff, it just happened. I had rebuilt a 350 to 355 but I used a set of smog heads which was a huge mistake. Terrible mpg when I had it in my 82 1/2 ton van, even worse when I put it into my 75 C20 w 3.73 gears and TH350. Pulling a 10k lbs trailer I was getting around 6mpg. Guess that wasn't too crazy considering the weight and dropping to second on hills. Runs ok but maybe a better set of heads would make it better. Or put the spare 454 sitting in storage. Would prefer to get a L96 and 6L90 trans if I find one at a decent price. Rebuilding the 6L90 should be easy enough to do, mainly a new valve body to fix any slop in the valve. If IIRC the make a stand-alone computer and harness. It's only a computer, just need to delete any garbage displacement on demand junk.

We also have to replace the suspension. We would probably be better off buying another one for $1,500 but the one we have has sentimental value. On the first gen dodges in 1988 they replaced the slant 6 with a v6 and added throttle body injection. The v6 is just a 318 with 2 less cylinders so it is about as reliable as a 318.

Fair warning with the t100, the 3.0’s have headgasket issues, and overall are not as refined as the later 3.4 in the tundra.
BUT my grandfather had one that got up to 700k! They are tanks
    Downsides:
Everything same as the tundra PLUS
    3.0 hg issues
Parts are a bit harder to find
    Little aftermarket support
    Even slower and more boring
    Upsides!
Comes with the 22re, and they are bullet proof
    Still cheap
    Still fun

Yeah, well, I agree with you on the manual transmissions. A clutch in a properly driven stick will go at least a 100k, if not more under the right feet. As for square body Chevys, they were terrible rust buckets. There pretty much aren't any left above about the 38th parallel, which drives the price way up on the southern survivors.
Not sure why you're constantly advocating scrapping throttle body injections. They were simple, reliable, usually fitted to proven Detroit iron engines, and drivability was excellent. I'd take a late 80s, early 90s TBI which is factory fitted to a standard small block Chevy any day of the week and twice on Sunday over some retrofitted, cobbled up carburetor POS. Plus, there's only about a million videos on UA-cam on how to troubleshoot and repair them, if and when you ever have a problem.
Anyway, my pick would be the late 80s to mid-90s GMs with the throttle body. They ran great, were cheap to fix, and weren't near as rusty as the square bodies. Also Fords of that vintage and mid-90s Dodges. I bought a 95 Dodge out of some guy's back yard for 200 bucks. Spent about a thousand bucks to get it roadworthy and it's been my daily driver for the past five years. Runs great.

The older automatic transmissions are simple enough to rebuild at home, and don't cost a crazy amount at a trans shop. A Squarebody with SM465 or a Ford/Dodge with the NP435 are good manuals, but lack overdrive

the frist and second gen doges are starting toget up there in price as well as the OBS fords. I can confirm that the obs ford with a inline 6 are rather bullet proof. When I got mine, the coolant very well may of been over 10 years old. Then the rad wasn't really that full. It now has some sensor that doesn't work right but runs fine. Check engine light just pops up now and again says hello for a bit and then goes away. Try and avoid the M5OD manual transmission its the weak link. Same thing thats in a Miata but built up.

Each one has a bit more differences than just the bodywork though, so do your research before choosing.
