It is difficult to find ambient which actually punctuates sound/form and has something to say, and isn't subtle to the point of being vague. This album definitely strikes that. It is a journey -- hypnotic, haunting, and vast. I've been listening to 1194 for two decades now, and it never gets old. What a masterpiece.
@@hanshandkante5055 Interesting points; I have heard similar before. I agree ambient is usually a bit more, well "ambient" as in ethereal, atmospheric, mood-setting. But if you distill these qualities then 1194 has them in its essence, only more intentionally so. Maybe 1194 eludes or transcends categorisation -- in which case please accept my sincere apologies for trampling on your sensibilities.
On Earth is one of my favorite tracks of all time, if not my favorite. The sound is otherworldly, it feels so alive. Never fails to give me goosebumps, it even makes me cry. Sounds like I'm listening to it for the first time whenever I decide to play it.
"On Earth", if not the whole albums of Em:t records, represents exactly why I love experimental, spontaneous and abstract music, and it represents the mentality of Em:it, it represents the real mentality of what music must be
For my taste in music, this is up there with very best ambient albums of all time. The atmosphere, the pacing, the ability to transport us listeners: it's a true masterpiece. I'll be listening to this until the end of my days.
My take-off music is always Minecraft Volume Alpha. Also Ambient, but brings a sense of childlike comfort and security while narrowly evading a grisly death at 300mph
This is absolutely great. Groove Salad@SomaFM brought me here. As pure lover of ambient tunes, I see the music made during the 90's as the milestones of a style. Woob reminds me to Essa 3, also to The Infinity Project, truly gems of the good electronic music.
Since it's release, my friends and I are always keeping an ear open to the source of the audio voice samples used in 1194. there are so many very cool and very interesting samples used. 25 years and we still don't know them all.
Something interesting about this album is the background sounds. Some parts have sounds of wind, thunder, singing, etc. It’s the subtleties and attention to detail that make this music even more awesome.
To me, Odonna is one of the greatest things I've ever listened to. For some reason the whole thing is incredibly impactful to me, even down to the heavenly chants towards the end of it. It makes me feel like I'm standing on a platform on top of a tall mountain. The sun dawning, the wind blowing in my face, and the feeling of my eyes watering as the cold wind hits my eyeballs. Just an experience in itself and that particular part of the track is less then 5 minutes long. A masterpiece.
ONe of my favorite albums in 94' and a soundtrack to very happy times and now memories. Early burning man, fantastical parties and bonkers camping trips~ thanks for putting it up here. I still have my CD, thankfully. ~Peace~
Classic album! - I have been wanting to buy the original CD for ages, but can't justify the cost. My only complaint is that the first song is too short...
A masterpeice! To Doc Diamond check out Future Sound of London : Lifeforms, Irrresistable force: global chillage, anything on the Instinct ambient label as well as the Emit label Woob was on, all out of print but some hardcore collectors have preserved most of the catalog online. So much amazing music from that time!
Totally second Michelle's suggestion of Lifeforms. Alas, a school friend at the time left my CDs on the radiator and warped them. I recommend checking out Amorphous Androgynous, FSOL's alter ego. Though faster paced than Lifeforms, Tales of Ephidrina is very good. I dig it out from time to time.
AAs good to veg/sleep to! FSOL's ISDN Transmissions was FAR more Technilectrical, hard edged electronic tunes. Lifeforms = one long mellow, stoned, little fluffy clouds esk... Each to their own, I prefer the Mechanical 'sits easy beside produced Industrial' in yr collection!
I put off listening to this for so long just because it's not on spotify and HOLY SHIT have I been missing out. This is quite different from any other ambient releases I'm familiar with, yet it absolutely makes sense even at a first listen. Definitely some dark ambient vibes and at the same time some affinity to the Orb's ambient house work (which has nothing to do with the former). But overall the most prevalent theme seems to be tribal ambient. Crazy, but in some ways it also reminds me of The Residents' Eskimo. It just fills a gap inbetween a lot of the other ambient classics while also complementing them.
Probably the most richly layered ambient piece of all time. It would be hard to find anything so complex so beautifully constructed , that will build a world of sounds as involving as Paul Frankland's Woob 1194. For those that know, there isn't anything prior or after this album that could compare, by Frankland or anyone. This album stands alone as an epic seminal work of pure genius.
I'm curious about the album cover - where are these penguins? when are they? who are they? what are they looking at (presumably their local star as their shadows are cast behind them)? what have they done with their life? do they have regrets? do they contemplate on our finite fleeting existence? what do they do all day? who is their leader? are there 1194 penguins in this penguin civilisation? or are we in the year 1194AD? what is a woob? so many questions, so little time.
all the albums on this label (e:mt) had wildlife photos that looked like this, and were numbered based on the album's serial number. it was a cool aesthetic!
I bought this from Ambient Soho in Berwick Street Soho (sadly no longer there) just because I liked the look of the penguins. Turned into one the best music purchases I ever made. We are kindred spirits. I was in highschool during the 1992-1996 ambient music peak years and listened to nearly everything that had come out, and these 5 minutes stand out as some of the most piercingly beautiful. The Orb's track Plateau is also up there as transcendental. I wish Woob had elongated this portion, as I could listen to it for eternity.
