    I give Buchanan two rounds with duran getting some 10-8s in dominant rds. ken was literally pummelled from post to post in nearly every round. Count the times he is rocked..by bombs..! 50-60 times. But the guy could take it. He was an excellent fighter...great jabber...lot of great wins...but he was in with one of the greatest ever.

    The ref made the excuse of it being an abdomen punch- so he was calling Buchanan a fake. I suppose his pain and hospital treatment aftewards were faked. He was obviously hit low, after the bell, and was in agony from it. Duran could have had a rematch after disqualification- which was more than the champion Buchanan got. Shameful indeed.

  • @mizofan
    @mizofan 12 років тому +2

    I don't doubt Buchanan was heading for defeat against the great Duran, but it was a very unsatisfactory way for such a fine boxer to lose his title. Whether he was expecting a disqualification or not, his pain was surely genuine. Buchanan was one of the best from Britain (Jimmy Wilde #1).

    This was a good fight. Both fighters were dynamic and knowledgeable. BUT when that groin punch came Buchanan had connected a few times to Durans head. Interesting thing... I think Duran always had an inner demon. Kind of a true self that only showed itself when he was deaparate in a fight(which wasn't hardly at all). It showed itself against the second Leaonard fight when he quit. In this fight he threw a dirty punch.

    To all Buchanan apologist out there. The fact is that Buchanan didn't want to continue fighting. I'm a boxing fan, from time to time you see guys get hit on the nuts, the ref give them a few minutes to recover and they keep fighting with no problem. Buchanan was acting as if someone shoot him in the nuts. Since he was taking a beating from Duran and being well behind in the scorecards, tried to get Duran DQ because of the suppose low blow and it backfired on him.

  • @irresistablejewel

    I had to watch it a few times and, in my opinion, the material in Buchannan's shorts is the clue. As Duran moves right and the ref steps in: Buchannan's shorts drop back into place after seemingly being forced upwards. I can't see the blow land as the viewpoint is on the line of alleged punch. Duran certainly lines up to deliver a vicious looking right hook, if it did connect I could understand Bucannan not being able to continue.
    It happens really quickly 3.02 - 3.03. Low blow I think.

    Pat the Hombre, Yes, good points about Buchanan's lack of power. Also, Duran later took Hagler 15 rounds, so he wasn't going to be troubled by the lighter hitting of Buchanan. Duran was the stronger fighter on the night, but the way he won - no need to hit Buchanan low and after the bell. And as for the ref''s decision making... @ImTheFuckinBarbs I read Buchanan "exaggerated the pain" to save face and had always believed it. If KB needed surgery on a ball, he must have been in agony. I've seen many boxers take hard punches to the nuts, but nothing like KB's reaction. I wonder if KB's protective cup was defective? A rematch was made because of controversy, but an injury caused the rematch to be cancelled. I agree that Duran would have won 2nd bout with Buchanan. Thanks for setting the record straight.

    @PerignonPop I appreciate the answers conveyed in your replies. It is always refreshing to receive civil posts which are both informative and personable ( i receive too
    few of this type). I am anxious to hear what Mr. Buchanan has to say. I read in SI that
    Eleta 1st agreed to a rematch in Nov. 72. As before, an injury postponed that rematch
    & was resheduled for June, 73. Here is where the storyline gets murky; Duran lost a 10 rd non- title fight which Duran lost by UD. To be continued :-).

      +getarslim The only fighter there known to be a coward is Duran when he turned his back with sugar ray. Classic communistic ploy. Make the innocent the coward. A Scot does not wear his family plaid to fake an injury wgere THE OFFICIAL MEDICAL REPORT STATES THAT HIS TESTICLE WAS SWOLLEN AND IN SIGNIFICANT PAIN>. don't do that- your boy was the one cursing and cursing at KB because he would not drop. He beat Laguna in 130 degrees in the 15th Don't do that.I watch it and watch it and KB was dancing in the 13th and with 10 seconds left (someone saw it higher) Buchanan snapped Duran's head back, which imo told Duran that he was the next Laguna. The most biased ring announcer of all time never mentioned that buchanan was looking mighty fresh . Look at the head snap which is when Duran told his uncle to get off him in so many words.Look at it and watch buchanans legwork considering he was near death if you listened to that creep

      +getarslim Well you are wrong. It was some kind of alloy, Great Opponent? You speak as fact and each time undercuts Buchanan's reputation. Do yo think that a man that just had gone 13 rounds and the rag writers say it was one big illegal mauling- Ali would have been giving the Ref speeches. But not Buchanan, But no word from the commentator on how the momentum had changed , and the 15th round victory against Laguna by TKO in 130 degrees? Did you know That KB was so secure in his abilities that I believe for one of his two Laguna fights that someone? had dropped - had decided no. Well Buchanan I bet always said yes. Does one see astericks *Two days to train? *No complaints with the ref as Duran's REF warned low blow in the 13th. Well 30 seconds later I guess it was ok in his mind because the round was over, how bad can it be? Why not call the detectives and press charges, When you see the picture we are looking at a criminal act, and Duran I believe the insanity of this guy marked with the most powerful vitamin pill known to man is how I explain his relentlessness. What was the point scoring since the 8th round. I was always taught that the champ has to be taken, whooped, in this case it was stolen.
      Dunphee, was the most pathetic commentator of all time. Dunphee, when A guy can punch, and dance, is very smart,
      is there not the question of asking why is this baby faced running on batteries? Buchanan was a race horse, what is wrong? so much energy? Screaming at KB for not dropping as this jerk announced to the world round 9 was it.

    Look at incident. The ref put his arms around Duran AFTER Buchanan hit him. This unfortunately misdirected Duran's punch into Buchanan's virgina but it also softened the blow. It was after the bell and below the belt. Duran is scoring most of the points with his head and hitting low. Both of these would at a minimun get points deducted, if the fight took place now. If Duran persited he would be disqualified. Don't get me wrong Duran got some good punches. However, would a Champion ever not get a rematch nowadays? the reverse angle slow-mo shows everything. It shows this dog Buchanan, BEFORE DURAN, throwing a right AFTER THE BELL. It also shows the ref attempting to stop Buchanan from throwing more punches. While doing so, he stumbled over the top of Duran to get Buchanan. The ref was rightly stopping Buchanan, not Duran, because he was the first to illegally continue after the bell. Duran, while ducking under the punch and having the ref over him, hit Buchanan in the balls

    You're quite right. Duran was the better fighter and winning but should have been disqualified- otherwise any fighter, whether better or worse than the opponent, could do that and get away with it, causing a lot of damage. That's why boxing has rules, that the ref should apply. Regardless of who was winning, Buchanan was entitled to be able to keep fighting without being fouled and badly hurt. It was a terrible decision.

    some people... he said he was ok to continue. Plus yes Buchanan might have thrown a punch after the bell, but thats coz he was in a flurry so probly didnt notice, when the ref sepped in, those punches stopped, but Duran landed his best punch of the fight, but below the belt. Offcourse Duran was ahead but Buchanan was the champion and for him 2 lose like that is a shame, Duran shoulda given him a rematch.

  • @set2light
    @set2light 15 років тому

    It's poor analysis to merely say both fighters hit after the bell. The fact is Buchanan was the one who FIRST continued after the bell. In that first instance, Duran was ducking under the punch and the ref, who was behind him, went over the top of Duran to try and stop Buchanan's illegal punches.
    While Duran was ducking and having the ref on his back, he accidently threw a low blow.
    There is absolutely no suggestion of foul play or dirty tactics

  • @vicsmith5000
    @vicsmith5000 15 років тому

    How can it be poor analysis ? It is a statement of fact. Duran didn't have to continue hitting after the bell just because Buchanan did, did he ? Whether it was accidentally low or not is immaterial, he still hit after the bell. I don't think either should have been disqualified though.

    Buchanan spent way too long trying to figure out how to fight Duran, but they time he started throwing punches in bunches it was too late. In the early rounds Buchanan was like 'throw jab, miss right.............................throw jab, miss hook........'. Too tentative.

    ここからロベルト・デュランの伝説が始まった。ブキャナンというのはライト級史上でもトップクラスの名チャンピオンで、もしデュランがいなければ後数年は王座に居続けたのではないだろうか。この試合では、一部が指摘するようにローブロウで決まったような感じがするが、仮にそれが無くてもフォロースルーの効いたデュランの強打にもう限界に来ていたように思える。

    Duran was a GREAT fighter, but he was a paradox. His 'No Mas' comment against Sugar Ray Leonard and then not honoring his contractual obligation to give Buchanan a rematch were two examples of that. Can't figure him out.

    Duran took the entire fight to Buchanan and Ken new his title was going and when the 'low blow' came he thought if he went down Duran would be disqualified. Very unprofessional of him. Ken was a great and stylish boxer but bear in mind all boxers wear a reinforced groin guard so if you get hit by a low blow your nuts are well protected.

    @loyaldude10 In fact, rematch was ageed to because of controversy about alleged low blow. Films show that both fighters continued after bell ended the round; & the ref grabbed RD's arm to stop late action & lowered Duran's punch. It seems likely Ken B. exaggerated pain of low blow to "save face". The rematch was postponed because of an injury to one of the boxers (I forget which). For reasons I don't know the postponed rematch was never made. It would have been an entertaining fight!

    This was a blatantly erroneous decision by Lobianco. Duran was clearly winning, but that doesn't mean he gets the crown with a damaging low blow after the bell. If the rules didn't allow for a period of recovery for Buchanan before resuming the contest, either Duran should have been disqualified or a no-contest verdict registered. And I say this as an admirer of Duran's fighting prowess. This was not the proper way for a title to change hands.

    After watching the after bell I see one swing by Buchanan in the shoulder area of Duran, For Duran after the bell I was incorrect thinking Duran broke loose of the ref, but he managed to hold him. At this point Buchanan's one swing is long finished, and he drags the ref up to the Gonads -what- are you going to tell me for retribution of a half swing Duran is going to drag the ref? NO, HE WAS READY to pull the trigger. For the record Dunphy had his money on Duran, If there is a transcript I can't wait. Utter disgust talking trash of the Champion. You Dunphy respect the Champ period, and should have been calling for an undecided. OH MR DUNPHY_ that sure was a boxing match to the head of Duran just before the Bell- for a dead guy he was signalling to Duran- "Can't wait to see you in two rounds"

    I disagree! Pacquiao cannot fight backing up and Duran would have been all over Pacman with hard shots to the body & head, worthy of his nickname "Hands of Stone."
    Duran is deceptively quick, has a great defense and Pac would have been overmatched.
    As for Buchanan - Pac, it would have been a tough fight but either one could have been victorious on any given night. Pacman is not in Duran's league - period!

    @coffeeshopping -yes, Duran never gave him a rematch. Not that Buchanan would have had much of a chance. Duran just swarmed him. He had splinters in a testicle from his metallic cup twisting. He had surgery. You are ignorant and stop calling me a liar- go to images in google and look for the one where duran is almost on his knees ready to explode. Perhaps the most corrupt single sporting event in modern history, You are too stupid to realize because of Duran's fear of 14 and 15 he ended it . It was so premeditated, that DURAN was rewarded for stealing what could have been one of the greatest fights ever. TIP: DURAN WOULD NEVER ALLOW KB A CHANCE< AFTER KB AS A CHAMPION GAVE HIM HIS CHANCE. DURAN ADMITTED TO KB< BUT NOT THE WORLD HE DID IT< WHEN ASKED WHO HIS TOUGHEST BOXER WAS w/o hesitation BUCHANAN!!! KB was never knocked out in 555 rounds- his entire career, and this JUICED, IMO, SQUIRT predicted a 9th round ko because of a gypsy and when it didn't happen screamed and yelled at the champion. His Ref was "related" found out later- you should be on KB's side or are you racist.

    @PerignonPop It's interesting to me that 2 of 3 cordial replies I received on boxing blogs were sent from the UK. IMO, for whatever reason, civility and courtesy in America have taken a sharp downturn in the past 25 years. This lower standard is reflected in lessened sportmanship in many of our pro athletes and a general decline in the quality of behavior seen in public. I remain hopeful that we Americans will regain our former, higher sense of fairness and respect for others. Regards.

    Buchanan knows he's about to lose so he fakes a low blow. I have been watching boxing for a long time and I have never seen a boxer go down that way. What's amazing is that he gets up from the canvass, walks to his corner, stands and talks to the referee probably asking that Duran be disqualified and when the ref is unresponsive to his suggestion, he goes down on his knees again. It's one of the most cowardly display that I have ever witness from a boxer.

    • @duffgordon9005

      +anthony81860 you guys told him 2X that he was hurt with ruptured testicle but he has the kind of mind like his picture- I actually believe this kid is in 4th grade. But this isn't ever help you antony because no one will dispute he went 13 rounds toe to toe and you better believe that Duran was nervous as his hero Laguna fought Buchannan in 130 open air and guess what round Laguna went down, the 15th, but I thought that was impossible Antony? You give no respect that Buchanan held the title 2X and was 42-1. I have the full report from a reporter maybe tomorrow. I would like anyone so inclined that Buchanan showed Duran at the end of the bell that forgetting the ringside guys, you keep your mouths shut because you have no ide what Duran felt that may have driven him to a rash decision. ANyway Buchanan never showed his back, but he was guilty for not realizing that Duran was coming to end it by crushing his manhood in a cowardly way.

People should be very angered that Duran basically stopped the fight, for if KB had dug deep, and he always dug deep, for 14 and 15 it could had been one of the greatest in history- instead the maniac said to himself- in a different way but reallty the same HE GOT TO DETERMINE THE TERMS OF THE BUCHANAN FIGHT AND THE SUGAR RAY- IF HE DOESN'T LIKE WHAT HE SEES HAPPENING he will hurt you, or bail on you but the fans ARE TOO STUPID TO REALIZE WHAT THEY MISSED IF DURAN HAD LET IT PLAY OUT. A couple of years ago , Roberto Duran attended a hall of fame get together for great champion boxers . Duran was asked which fighter out of all those he fought during his career gave him his toughest fight . Without hesitatation , Duran replied , " Ken Buchanan ! " The truth is that Ken Buchanan was robbed here . He had frustrated Duran throughout the contest , and Duran knew that he needed to knock out Buchanan in order to win the fight . When he couldn't do that , he instead hit Buchanan with a crunching left hook to the balls , which would have finished any fighter . Buchanan was ahead on points - anyone who knows anything about boxing knows this to be the case . Duran knew it , and that is why he delivered the ultimate low blow when he did .

      Actually, Buchanan was behind on all three judge's scorecards with Duran having received eight rounds to four on two scorecards and nine to Buchanan's three on the other heading into the 13th round. You must be viewing this fight through plaid tinted glasses if you don't see Duran dishing out a beating to the Scot.

    • @ThefightingCelt
      @ThefightingCelt 5 років тому

      Not on my scorecard . Buchanan had been out jabbing Duran for most of the fight and many of Duran' s punches were landing on Buchanan's arms and gloves . Duran was ruffled , hence his low blow at the end , for which he should have been disqualified . To this day Duran is asked which was his toughest fight . He always gives the same answer : " Buchanan ! "
