The doll is honestly beautiful and seeing those "it broke" moments made me sad. One thing that I think you should have done was use fabric paint for the tail because acrylics aren't meant to be soft and bendable when they dry unlike fabric paint.
the last "it broke" had me chuckle loudly, merciless me XD i mean, i saw it coming and i was surprised the nose didn't come off earlier, during the dye bath.
i know she was talking about how she didn’t like the wings because of how blanket like they are, but honestly i enjoy it! it adds more to the peaceful side of the dark, it reminds me of the whole blanket protecting children from what lurks in the dark!
I think this doll is soooooo awesome...but I agree that there is something off. I stared at it for a while. I think ( just to me at lest ) that the concept arts face looks very kind, calm and reserved. The dolls face looks more ready, attentive and energetic. With the astrology side of the theme, I imagine that she would spend a lot of time alone at night doing star stuff, quietly with fire flies to keep her company. I love the wings ever with a bit of poof. The body is outstanding! I think what I feel off about is the face. That's just my thoughts. 💙

I believe Nyx’s mistakes also play into the dark elements, as sometimes mistakes are considered bad and therefore dark? If that makes sense, I love her and think she’s very beautiful :)
The hot glue seeping out would actually be a super cool effect on a fire/lava dragon! It reminds me of the magma that oozes out of volcanoes Edit: the stage after fixing the hot glue with apoxy also looks super cool! Like a gemstore or rock

After rewatching this, the fabric tail is actually not bad when its scrunched up. It gives off a way that makes it act like skin. Same thing with Vaporion (bad spelling) it gives it the effect of skin and it looks amazing!

I can imagine why she's thinking that. The project went wrong in many places, which left her annoyed and sad. That's why she is not satisfied. And also, she ended up rushing the doll after things started going wrong. “I’m not satisfied.” As an artist I think I can figure out why. There was things that went wrong and broke or didn't go as planned. You create this vision in your head of what you want something to look like but it just doesn't turn out the way you want it too. Believe me, recently I made an art piece and I had such a good vision for it but so much went wrong making it, by the end I didn't like it. It be like that sometimes. Just like Nova you can always go back and fix it, nothing wrong with that! Just know while you may not enjoy what art you created, others will! :)
That is exactly the way I see this. As an artist, you do envision this wonderful piece and when you go to create it, it fights back. Thing break, colors run or fade, adhesives fail, the sculpt doesn't turn out properly, the list goes on and on. It's so disappointing to make a piece of art and not be satisfied with it.

I definitely think you're overthinking this. I love this doll re-paint and I think she came out looking amazing! She looks mystical, mysterious, sly, intelligent, and powerful, all at once! My one critique is about the tail, cause I agree with you that it would have been better to print out a custom fabric. But I think everything else turned out wonderfully! Despite some of the hiccups along the way, I think she stands out in great way and really gives off a "dark enchantress" vibe that I'm very fond of. You did great on this one!

It’s been three years and I still love this doll so much. Her Greek nose makes her so unique compared to the other dolls. I’d love to see more unique noses in the future as they give a face such fun character. ❤️
Honestly, I feel like all of the breakages were almost apt for a dark themed doll. She' imperfect and broken and spooky, perfect for someone dark. She' also absolutely beautiful and well worth the wait.

As an artist I can sympathize with her because its very hard to be proud of the work you did. While being critical and being dissatisfied with the work does help with improving yourself never having confidence in your work can be detrimental as well. It is a long way to go but I'm sure every artist will get there. But I have to agree with you this doll looks incredible!

I love this doll and all her wrinkles. They give her way more life and personality than she'd have otherwise. Sometimes the imperfections just add to that hand made charm.
This person is honestly an engineer. Like when I first started watching their videos I was like ooh! Dolls! And promptly became fascinated with the processes and problem solving that ties in to this kind of art. Very cool

I love the way her third eye looks like a gem in light, but when it's dark, the way it glows with her other 2 eyes is just- really pretty, and it shows that it's also an eye. I also love the way the stars and moon above her head glow in the dark as well. She's just really pretty overall. Especially the starry fabric on her wings.

i actually love the quilted look of her wings, it's like she's forcing realty rifts to bind to her will to show constellations and stars. she's wonderful and i especially love her legs and claws. i think your dissatisfaction comes from some of the many conceptual failures and struggles you had while making this doll. Instead you need to look at the results, shes a wonderful and very much loved doll. this is not a Nova situation. this is a artist misjudging their work because it didn't go as smoothly as normal work goes situation. Keep your chin up and continue your work, i love seeing dragons!
I agree. I think its just a frustration with adapting concepts and the limitation of the medium, or knowledge of mediums that can translate into the vision. I completely understand that feeling. I think what helps is considering the mediums you woul use and what effects you want as you are making the concept art. Not that you shouldnt try to push yourself, your knowledge etc. But the claw thing was a great example of getting the similar idea by structurally going a different route and succeeding. It was an engineering issue at that point that she could overcome. But you can only come up against so many of those in one project and find a successful solution for so many. So sometimes you have to dial the challenges back for one project, or you find yourself disastisfied with the results because the entire thing was a struggle and a ton of experimentation. You end up looking at her like shes a Manny in disguise rather than having affection for a manny that really challenged you but doesnt pretend to be completed or a success. And with a project that has a lot of experimentations, sometimes it better to lean into the results of failure and work with them, rather than trying to ressist and cover them up, which is difficult when you have exact concept art you are trying reproduce, rather than relying loosely on a concept. Like that discoloration with the dyes creates a pretty cool effect that you could lean into. Might have been cool to make a proto nyx with all the failed experimentations and come back to the concept art again at antoher time when you are armoured with the knowledge of how to do those ideas effectively, at east as effectively as you imagine is possible. oh and the glue seeping. Reminded me a bit of frankie stien and how that might be useful at some point when making a zombie horror doll with seeping seams.
“Dissatisfied” What?!?!? This is probably one of my favorite dolls from you. I can understand your frustration as a creator with her, because of all of the mistakes and fails in the process, but I feel that those give her more personality. She may not be your ‘cleanest’ doll, but their is something about her that’s very entrancing. There is a lot of complexity, yet she isn’t cluttered, everything on her ended up pulling through to create a very well crafted character. Don’t feel dissatisfied by reasons you can’t specifically name. She is a lovely doll, don’t let yourself tell you otherwise.
I wasn’t a big fan of Nyx when the video first came out but after rewatching it I like her a lot more then before. She’s a beautiful doll and captures the theme of dark very well
Nyx is my favourite dragon of this series, I feel like she’s the mom of the group and they go to her for advice cuz she’s the wisest, sure she’s not perfect but last I checked no one is and her imperfections add character

Just rewatching the dragon series and realizing how much influence I took from them for my first sculpture, her horn shape and Terra’s half tree half rock leg design. Which is impressive because my first sculpture was of a mythical deer.

Dollightful needs to bring out merch with the words “it broke” on it 😂😂😂 Also, if I were to make a suggestion: maybe changing her clothes to be something less clunky might help and styling the hair with small braids might give the face or hair more dimensions
Your videos really inspire me to create! I watch them whenever I feel like drawing and they make great background noise. I really love how it turned out despite thinking a thematically dark dragon doll would have looked good. I like the space feel she gives! So cool!
Everyone has already said what needs to be said re: your dissatisfaction with this doll but I'm just going to say one thing. I loved this video so much because it showcased trial and error, learning from mistakes, inventing new techniques, reflecting on issues and perseverance. despite all your hiccups you still produced a gorgeous doll. I'm blown away by your abilities to stay the course and just finishing a project alone is a triumph, even without things going wrong. You honestly inspire me, and i think i'm not alone when I say that a lot of people will see this as an encouraging video. So many people get overwhelmed as beginners when they see people with a lot of experience bringing out incredible works every time. What they often fail to see is the amount of work, time and patience that goes into producing these things. and i mean that in the grand scheme of things. you can't compare your beginners work to an expert, it will never work out well for you. but while you did create a beautiful end result (i'll keep saying it), watching you work through the issues and still finish gives me such inspiration to work on my projects! it shows that these hiccups are not exclusive to me, that even someone with such experience can have bad experiences with their projects every so often. it is weirdly humbling. I've tried doll mods before but I've never finished a project because i've been faced with hiccups and i have just put the project down and just.. never came back to them. so yeh you've inspired me so much. also heck yes using dye to colour doll skin is BRILLIANT! I am a little surprised I hadn't thought of that before but I definitely want to test that technique out! as for the wings, i wonder whether it would have been a better idea to glue the wrong sides together, rather than sewing them. May not have been as flexible but that kind of material does not fray, so you would have gotten a really smooth result i think. but I don't think they look as bad as you feel that they do. the fabric was the perfect background for the galaxy wings!

Exactly. The parts when together may have made a different impression on her than she expected. I also dont think she loves galaxy as a design, & couldn't get in the zone, etc.. couldn't bond with the doll. That clouds her from seeing her for what she is. I do that with art sometimes too. But either way not every projects ends up being what you want, even when you try as hard as you can. And that's ok! 🤗 I really love the colors of the doll, the horns are amazing, & I like the rope design tied around the waist.
As artists, we are always hardest on ourselves. This is honestly one of my favorite dolls you've ever done. It seems so real in a way others haven't. I am a devout of the velveteen rabbit mythos; the more worn down and broken, the more real a thing is, so perhaps I love this doll more for its broken parts. Keep doing what you do (so well). 17:51 - something that might help with a similar problem in the future is fusible interfacing, or iron on adhesive - if you attached it to the back of the wing fabric, once you have it in place you could iron both sides of the wings together to make them stick together. This doesn't work on all types of fabric, so it might not have helped here, either. Either way, I think she looks amazing, and I'm always impressed with your ingenuity and creativity in these videos! Thank you for making them.

Also, it's easier to paint white fabric black than black fabric light blue. I still love this doll more than the design.
There's a medium for acrylics so you can use them for fabrics. It's pretty handy.

I definitely think you're overthinking this. I love this doll re-paint and I think she came out looking amazing! She looks mystical, mysterious, sly, intelligent, and powerful, all at once! My one critique is about the tail, cause I agree with you that it would have been better to print out a custom fabric. But I think everything else turned out wonderfully! Despite some of the hiccups along the way, I think she stands out in great way and really gives off a "dark enchantress" vibe that I'm very fond of. You did great on this one!

As an artist I can sympathize with her because its very hard to be proud of the work you did. While being critical and being dissatisfied with the work does help with improving yourself never having confidence in your work can be detrimental as well. It is a long way to go but I'm sure every artist will get there. But I have to agree with you this doll looks incredible!

I love the way her third eye looks like a gem in light, but when it's dark, the way it glows with her other 2 eyes is just- really pretty, and it shows that it's also an eye. I also love the way the stars and moon above her head glow in the dark as well. She's just really pretty overall. Especially the starry fabric on her wings.

i actually love the quilted look of her wings, it's like she's forcing realty rifts to bind to her will to show constellations and stars. she's wonderful and i especially love her legs and claws. i think your dissatisfaction comes from some of the many conceptual failures and struggles you had while making this doll. Instead you need to look at the results, shes a wonderful and very much loved doll. this is not a Nova situation. this is a artist misjudging their work because it didn't go as smoothly as normal work goes situation. Keep your chin up and continue your work, i love seeing dragons!
I agree. I think its just a frustration with adapting concepts and the limitation of the medium, or knowledge of mediums that can translate into the vision. I completely understand that feeling. I think what helps is considering the mediums you woul use and what effects you want as you are making the concept art. Not that you shouldnt try to push yourself, your knowledge etc. But the claw thing was a great example of getting the similar idea by structurally going a different route and succeeding. It was an engineering issue at that point that she could overcome. But you can only come up against so many of those in one project and find a successful solution for so many. So sometimes you have to dial the challenges back for one project, or you find yourself disastisfied with the results because the entire thing was a struggle and a ton of experimentation. You end up looking at her like shes a Manny in disguise rather than having affection for a manny that really challenged you but doesnt pretend to be completed or a success. And with a project that has a lot of experimentations, sometimes it better to lean into the results of failure and work with them, rather than trying to ressist and cover them up, which is difficult when you have exact concept art you are trying reproduce, rather than relying loosely on a concept.
Like that discoloration with the dyes creates a pretty cool effect that you could lean into. Might have been cool to make a proto nyx with all the failed experimentations and come back to the concept art again at antoher time when you are armoured with the knowledge of how to do those ideas effectively, at east as effectively as you imagine is possible. oh and the glue seeping. Reminded me a bit of frankie stien and how that might be useful at some point when making a zombie horror doll with seeping seams.

This is probably one of my favorite dolls from you. I can understand your frustration as a creator with her, because of all of the mistakes and fails in the process, but I feel that those give her more personality. She may not be your ‘cleanest’ doll, but their is something about her that’s very entrancing. There is a lot of complexity, yet she isn’t cluttered, everything on her ended up pulling through to create a very well crafted character. Don’t feel dissatisfied by reasons you can’t specifically name. She is a lovely doll, don’t let yourself tell you otherwise.

Everyone has already said what needs to be said re: your dissatisfaction with this doll but I'm just going to say one thing. I loved this video so much because it showcased trial and error, learning from mistakes, inventing new techniques, reflecting on issues and perseverance. despite all your hiccups you still produced a gorgeous doll. I'm blown away by your abilities to stay the course and just finishing a project alone is a triumph, even without things going wrong. You honestly inspire me, and i think i'm not alone when I say that a lot of people will see this as an encouraging video. So many people get overwhelmed as beginners when they see people with a lot of experience bringing out incredible works every time. What they often fail to see is the amount of work, time and patience that goes into producing these things. and i mean that in the grand scheme of things. you can't compare your beginners work to an expert, it will never work out well for you. but while you did create a beautiful end result (i'll keep saying it), watching you work through the issues and still finish gives me such inspiration to work on my projects! it shows that these hiccups are not exclusive to me, that even someone with such experience can have bad experiences with their projects every so often. it is weirdly humbling. I've tried doll mods before but I've never finished a project because i've been faced with hiccups and i have just put the project down and just.. never came back to them. so yeh you've inspired me so much.
also heck yes using dye to colour doll skin is BRILLIANT! I am a little surprised I hadn't thought of that before but I definitely want to test that technique out!
as for the wings, i wonder whether it would have been a better idea to glue the wrong sides together, rather than sewing them. May not have been as flexible but that kind of material does not fray, so you would have gotten a really smooth result i think. but I don't think they look as bad as you feel that they do. the fabric was the perfect background for the galaxy wings!

Exactly. The parts when together may have made a different impression on her than she expected. I also dont think she loves galaxy as a design, & couldn't get in the zone, etc.. couldn't bond with the doll. That clouds her from seeing her for what she is. I do that with art sometimes too. But either way not every projects ends up being what you want, even when you try as hard as you can. And that's ok! 🤗

As artists, we are always hardest on ourselves. This is honestly one of my favorite dolls you've ever done. It seems so real in a way others haven't. I am a devout of the velveteen rabbit mythos; the more worn down and broken, the more real a thing is, so perhaps I love this doll more for its broken parts. Keep doing what you do (so well). 17:51 - something that might help with a similar problem in the future is fusible interfacing, or iron on adhesive - if you attached it to the back of the wing fabric, once you have it in place you could iron both sides of the wings together to make them stick together. This doesn't work on all types of fabric, so it might not have helped here, either. Either way, I think she looks amazing, and I'm always impressed with your ingenuity and creativity in these videos! Thank you for making them.
