My daughter and I live outside of Nashville near a large expanse of forest on a hill and I love going to find fossils in our woods. It has a dry stream bed running through it where we find all kinds of gastropod and small marine fossils. I've found two fossilized barnacles even! :) Really well preserved

I grew up next to a creek in Middle Tennessee. I used to be all over the sand bars when I was a kid, looking for crinoid stems. I thought they were so cool! I had thousands of them(ended up giving most away to children who were fascinated with my rock collection). I also managed to find honeycomb coral (favosites) and horn coral(rugosa). I have other coral looking fossils that I have never identified. Throughout my entire childhood, I only managed to find one arrowhead. It was laying right on top of the bar, after a heavy rain raised the creek a bit for a few days. I'd love to get back on that creek bank again. All my rocks and fossils are purchased now. Although I do still have hundreds of the rocks I found as a child. I use some of my bigger finds from yesteryear as garden rocks in my flower beds. You have some stunning finds there, and I think I'll follow since you're hunting in Tennessee creeks, so I can relive my childhood wonder.

My property backs up to a creek that feeds into Cummins falls. We literally have hundreds probably thousands of crinoid stems in our yard and ditch as well. I went down by the creek and found some cool stuff. Ima bout to go excavate the entire creek bed 🤣🤣
@@flanneldaddy5220 I had to look that waterfall up on Google Maps. That would be an awesome place to rock hunt! Keep your eyes peeled for geodes too. The creek I hunted in was in Columbia, Tn. I found thousands of rocks, mostly criniods, in my youth. I miss the heck out of wading creeks, fishing and rock hunting.
Wow! That crazy rock is awesome! It can be sooo hard to figure out what you’re looking at! The coral is amazing too! TN is so much richer in gems and minerals than is talked about!
We have lived in middle Tennessee all our life. We walked creeks to fish and hunt for most of it. When we slowed our walk and started to really pay attention to the type of rocks and minerals we were really intrigued at the beauty and richness of what the area has. My family has a farm in the barrens area of north Robertson county tn and it has a lot of that coral rock in a bottum area that is flood prone. Must have been a sea eons ago

Im on the edge of my seat because your finds in this video are beyond magnificent! Im a rockhounder from Michigan & just came back from Tenn. yesterday & found a ton of the rocks/gem you showed at end of your video before you displayed them all at home. Its the crystally egg looking object you picked up. You talked about all the others you picked up but didnt say a word about this particular one that I most needed to know more about. Even the name. Im guessing a type of agate but not sure. Got beauties alongside the road near river btwn Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge. I am desperate to know more of the small egg like spheres-white, yellow, orange & red in color. Help me please....appreciate anything you pass on. Smiles from Michigan.
You must be referring to the Geodes that was found. These rocks are formed in pockets/voids in other rocks usually cotton rock in our area. The cotton rock is eroded away from water then the Geodes are left in the creek. Geodes are typically hallow and are filled with calcite or quartz crystals. Thanks for watching!
The white/clear oval rock he picked up in the video but didn't say anything about? Thats pieces of quartz that have been tumbled over the last few millions of years. I call them creek diamonds, lol. When you hold them up to the sun, they shine like a diamond. I have them all over in the branch on my property. The red and yellow are stained by Iron oxide. I'm in West TN😊
4:00 this is a nice agate/jasper with fossil inclusions I noticed when i rockhounded Tennessee in crockett county that some areas of the chert had more agate/jasper and some areas less this area you are in has quite a few good chalcedony concentrations which are what agate and jasper is. the piece in hand was created by fractures in the earth that got filled in by steam and liquid until they deposited the fracture entirely creating its own rock. Like a caulking the fracture will fill in mixing in with the seabed’s fossils and getting color from iron oxides. That rock is just like all the other rocks around just higher in chalcedony with the fossils mixed in.

That strange coral is a Favosite fossil, also known as a honeycomb coral! I found a really big one at one of my daughter's Girl scout meetings and then another one again a separate time :-) the first one I found even had some sort of organic material still inside. I thought at first it was wood but once I realized what it was, that it was a coral fossil, it made me wonder

@@MrMarkAMartin great comment Mark. I was looking in my roadside geology of Tennessee book and it was saying Tennessee does not have a Permian rock record. I think that’s due to heavy erosion. You could be right though. Would love to look into that deeper. Most of the rock exposures that we have in the central basin are of Mississippian and Ordovician layers. This is in the Paleozoic. As I recall Favosites arose in the early ordivician, we find several varietys of tabulate corals and some rugosa in the Carters formation of Stones RIver Group 454mya on up through Hermitage and esp the Catheys formations galore in wilson COunty TN east of axis Nashville Dome, all layers ordivician. I think they went Extinct in the Permian. @@TennesseeRocks

Hey thanks for the comment! We are in middle TN and yes the creek is located not far from where the Mississippian rock transitions into Ordovician. The creek carves through Ordovician limestone. I wonder sometimes how much of the chert is pushed down stream from the Mississippian layers. Thanks for watching!
I have a couple pieces now going so should know more in about a month. Trick is finding some that is very dense and not to porous. I cut a few pieces into squares so they would tumble quicker. So far you can visually see the coral structure in the rock. Hope it polishes up. Thanks for watching!
That’s awesome! We love finding different species of coral in our creeks. If you can find them fossilized in chert it’s possible to tumble them or cut them open with a tile saw to reveal there inside structures. Congratulations on your find and happy hunting!
I live in Newport by the bowling alley. I been getting into prospecting. Do you ever find any larger than a spec greenstone? Also I've learned gold follows with quartz
Thanks for the comment! We live in Middle TN and I believe greenstone is found more in East Tennessee but yes in East Tennessee I have found flakes of gold in quartz rocks. We were around Coker creek. Never had a lot of luck with prospecting but would be a blast if I lived in East Tennessee. Thanks for watching!
@@TennesseeRocks I have found green stone under a huge rock ground covered in moss. But they are tiny tiny. And I found 3 HUGE pure white quartz 2 the size of my hat
And 1 14" long 8" wide 5 " thick crystal pure white with yellow all over them. They are making a new highway so I walked the construction area and it looks like bleach white eggs popping up everywhere
But to 1 up all that. Right past bricks and conagra in Newport under this railroad bridge I found a large magnetic schist rock chunks of silver copper and hopefully gold. I'm afraid to take it apart. I put everything in my pan and nothing but mica copper pyrite gold silver and whatever else. And same day I found a tiny piece of meteorite magnetic leaves no marks on porcelain it changes from Blue to purple to green and is rusty

I haven’t done any rock hunting in that area but it looks like Wells Creek in El Paso has some gravel bars. Look at Google Maps and select the Satellite view and check it out. Sorry for the late reply! I hope y’all enjoy your visit to Tennessee. There are a lot of creeks and steams to hunt. I like using google maps on satellite view to look for nice gravel bars. We don’t give out specific creek info on the ones we hunt but I think you can’t go wrong anywhere in southern part of middle Tennessee. Thanks for watching!

I have heard of people finding nice geodes around Woodbury TN but that’s just outside of Murfreesboro. Not very familiar with your area. Best thing to do is look at google maps on satellite viewer and just go for it. Have fun !

As I recall Favosites arose in the early ordivician, we find several varietys of tabulate corals and some rugosa in the Carters formation of Stones RIver Group 454mya on up through Hermitage and esp the Catheys formations galore in wilson COunty TN east of axis Nashville Dome, all layers ordivician. I think they went Extinct in the Permian. @@TennesseeRocks

The honeycomb coral is some type of Rogusa Coral.

I live near the tenn. mountains. Have mostly sedimentary beds but also igneous in the mountains.
We live in middle Tennessee on the edge of the central basin and the western highland rim. Your area has some amazing amethyst geodes. Would love to rock hound over that way. Thanks for watching!

I found some of the brachiopods stone near a town called Loretto.

I hunt there. Very dear to me. I’ve found some really great stuff. Loooove hunting the creek/creeks. Fossils, points, tool, and corals. Plus some.

Hey thanks for the comment! We are in middle TN and yes the creek is located not far from where the Mississippian rock transitions into Ordovician. The creek carves through Ordovician limestone. I wonder sometimes how much of the chert is pushed down stream from the Mississippian layers. Thanks for watching!
So what does coral look like out of tumbler or do you tumbler that?
I have a couple pieces now going so should know more in about a month. Trick is finding some that is very dense and not to porous. I cut a few pieces into squares so they would tumble quicker. So far you can visually see the coral structure in the rock. Hope it polishes up. Thanks for watching!

I found a huge complete fossilized coral on the embankment of my grandmas house it’s was about 8 inches In diameter in middle Tennessee
That’s awesome! We love finding different species of coral in our creeks. If you can find them fossilized in chert it’s possible to tumble them or cut them open with a tile saw to reveal there inside structures. Congratulations on your find and happy hunting!

I live in Newport by the bowling alley. I been getting into prospecting. Do you ever find any larger than a spec greenstone? Also I've learned gold follows with quartz
Thanks for the comment! We live in Middle TN and I believe greenstone is found more in East Tennessee but yes in East Tennessee I have found flakes of gold in quartz rocks. We were around Coker creek. Never had a lot of luck with prospecting but would be a blast if I lived in East Tennessee. Thanks for watching!
@@TennesseeRocks I have found green stone under a huge rock ground covered in moss. But they are tiny tiny. And I found 3 HUGE pure white quartz 2 the size of my hat
And 1 14" long 8" wide 5 " thick crystal pure white with yellow all over them. They are making a new highway so I walked the construction area and it looks like bleach white eggs popping up everywhere
But to 1 up all that. Right past bricks and conagra in Newport under this railroad bridge I found a large magnetic schist rock chunks of silver copper and hopefully gold. I'm afraid to take it apart. I put everything in my pan and nothing but mica copper pyrite gold silver and whatever else. And same day I found a tiny piece of meteorite magnetic leaves no marks on porcelain it changes from Blue to purple to green and is rusty
Could you tell me where I can find rocks within an hour or so around Clarksville, TN? I am here from MI visiting my grandson for a few days. I can return the favor. I am looking for small creeks or dried up creeks. Thank you!
I haven’t done any rock hunting in that area but it looks like Wells Creek in El Paso has some gravel bars. Look at Google Maps and select the Satellite view and check it out. I'm about to take a trip to southern Tennessee with my 7 yr old son for a rockhounding road trip coming from just north of Columbus Ohio. Do you have any suggestions for a good area?
Sorry for the late reply! I hope y’all enjoy your visit to Tennessee. There are a lot of creeks and steams to hunt. I like using google maps on satellite view to look for nice gravel bars. We don’t give out specific creek info on the ones we hunt but I think you can’t go wrong anywhere in southern part of middle Tennessee. Thanks for watching!

I have heard of people finding nice geodes around Woodbury TN but that’s just outside of Murfreesboro. Not very familiar with your area. Best thing to do is look at google maps on satellite viewer and just go for it. Have fun !

I apologize we have been busy but one thing we would like to do is make a video with the tile saw cutting some of the agatized brachiopods. Also the big rock with the agatized bryozoan is finished with stage 1 tumble it will still be a little while. I hope it turns out decent it’s hard to tumble large rocks.
