I arrived there in the late 70s and stayed 20 years. Whenever I visit now it is a sorry sight. M&S, Debenhams, House of Fraser, Beales all gone and the town centre full of homeless drug addicts as a consequence of all the drug rehab halfway houses in Boscombe. Pretty tragic.
The authentic Bournemouth still in Hampshire (just) when filming took place in the summer of 73 full of charm and charisma and happy folk and then Dorset took over built the poorly planned Wessex way and everything else since has gone downhill fast and now even worse as BCP starts to throw its weight around this once Beautiful town!!! Alas 😎☹️
I live in Bournemouth & although the shops are still quite good although not quite as good as they were it’s a nice beach & there are even some restaurants. I love it. Great place to live
I well remember it in the 60s/early 70s, some of my family were from there so no hotels for us, learnt to swim in the sea there and playing in the stream running through the Winter Gardens with the other kids, great memories.
Sixpence to use a deckchair for the whole day! Amazing! Please keep these Wish You Were Here extracts coming, they’re on a par with Rank’s Look At Life short films.
So full of nostalgia - just love the ‘class’ suggested comments & the presenters ‘upper class’ ...... ah the good old days where you knew you place in life 😆
I am accustomed with seeing travel programmes that spruik the tourist hot spot, but it was a surprise to hear her chastise the common British holiday makers on how untidy they were. Might have been justified, just an odd time to tell us.
Yep, though the only reason beaches are clean today is that Councils employ an army of people to pick up rubbish, just like the streets and the fines for littering. Otherwise, I think people would be just as lazy today. But it's like dog do do (as it were!!) it hard to believe the streets used to have it everywhere!! ugh!
That 'exhibition of seashells' was more of a model village made of shells you could walk round. I can image the owner seeing this on the telly would have been tearing their hair out: "Now all the tourists will think it's just shells - no one will come to that!!!" 😫
Ah right, that sounds a bit more interesting than a load of shells on pinboards....not sure todays kids would be pacified by an open top bus though for any longer than ten minutes.
I used to love the old Victorian Ice Rink and the Pier Approach Swimming pool where they had the ''Big Splash'' show with the high divers and the beautiful UV lights that made the swimmers light up it was magical. Sadly these are no longer there Nor is the Winter Gardens nor the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The Pavilion Theatre is still there. The Shell house gone. I guess it has changed with the times.
Nearly 50 years on ... the rubbish left on the beach is horrendous - it looks like a municipal rubbish landfill most mornings. The zoo, ice rink and shell-house are all long gone. At least the pier is still there, but a family ticket is £4.40. oh, and most of the shops are shut.
@@Sidneyyoungblood75 true! I remember as a kid it was a job to scramble up the stone retaining wall to the promenade. Today the sand is within a foot of the top...and the beach is much wider in places 😊
@@greghonda5475 The old TV sketch. I wasn't offended though. Some 1960s documentary-makers were aware that their work COULD be viewed as snobbery but those that had integrity sought to highlight how awful Britain actually was for many people.
The interviews weren't "on the spot" as it seems. Everybody featured was asked in advance if they would be willing to speak on camera for the show before it was filmed, and Judith would do a rehearsal with them first. Even that guy's dog had to sign a consent form.
People was indeed nicer. Unfortunately that generation has gone and new generations are just entitled and rude, for the most part. I wish we could go back in time.
Agreed. Sadly re-education schools and universities in the UK has put this all behind us :( I'll get the delorean out if u can find some rubbish left laying around we can use as fuel
I’m Bournemouth born and raised, still live there now. Shout out to the few of us that are left.

How gently spoken the people are.
A different era.
70s were gentle then. I grew up in that decade!

Better times....nicer people, if only we could go back
Seems pretty much the same as before
It was a bit more genteel wasn't it...lots more holidaying pensioners and fewer hen/stag dos!

Two and a half Pence to get on the Pier ? I'm not paying that 😂

Good grief ...litter issues even back then!

Surprised to see my 12 yo self run past Judith at 12 seconds. Those camouflage hats were hip back in the day.
Judith Chalmers was being interviewed on BBC Radio 4 News at One on July 27. Still sounded the same.
I left school in 1974. It was my hometown until 1991. I am now in Australia living near Noosa in Queensland. I hope to return for a visit soon.
Don't do it. You'll be horrified.
Was going to say don't but someone beat me to it!
Great memories

The Shell house is no longer there. It was knocked down a few years ago
Johnathan Ryan re the open-topped bus-especially as it was suggested as something to do when it’s raining 🤦🏻♀️ 😝

It's sad to think the dog at the start is probably dead😔😔
I should think most of the people in the film are dead by now.
Most people over the age of 40 in this video are probably dead.
Everyone you see here is definitely dead at this point
Alexander Rossi Esquire not necessarily if they are young adults / children - they would be in their late 50s or 60s right now.
Yeah I’d say so the doggo would have to be about 45 years old!
